You've got a dangerous background
And everything you've dreamed of
Yeah, you're the Dark Angel
It don't show when you break up
And I'm the one who oughta know
Yeah, I'm the one left in the dust
Yeah, I'm the brokenhearted fool
Who was never quite enough

Oh, I'm an insider
I've been burned by the fire
Yes, and I've had to live with some hard promises
I've crawled through the briers
I'm an insider

It's a circle of deception
It's a hall of strangers
And it's a cage without a key
You can feel the danger
And I'm the one who oughta know
yeah, I'm the one you couldn't trust
Yes, I'm the lonely silent one
I'm the one left in the dust

Oh, I'm an insider,
I've been burned by the fire
Yes, and I've had to live with some hard promises
I've crawled through the briers
I'm an insider

I'll bet you're his masterpiece
I'll bet you're his self-control
Yeah you'll become his legacy
His quiet world of white and gold
And I'm the one who ought to know
Yeah, I'm the one you left to rust
And not one of your twisted friends
I'm the one you couldn't love

Oh, I'm an insider
I've been burned by the fire
Yes, and I've had to live with some hard promises
I've crawled through the briers
I'm an insider

I'm an insider

This song is about a couple that has broken up. Someone has cheated on their partner and now she (in this case) is upset."

"I'm the one you couldn't trust Yeah I'm the lonely silent one I'm the one left in the dust"

The last verse is coming from the guy who has been cheated on. If you think about it "His quiet world of white and gold." isn't hard to work out. Also 'His' as in the other guy.....

Beautiful, timeless, and more than a bit wrenching...possibly even a bit too much of the latter to ever be a chart hit (though I do like the sentiment, Muddy). It clearly belongs in the Tom Petty Top Ten, which by now is fairly competitive territory.

This song is in my Top 10 list of favorite TP songs. The lyrics are so powerful & moving. It's my favorite duet between Tom & Stevie. Tom wrote Insider for Stevie but he liked it so much he told her he couldn't give it to her so he wrote Stop Draggin' My Heart Around for her which became a big hit. Personally, I think Insider is such a better song. The lyrics are just mind blowing. Anyone that has been in a relationship knows exactly what the line "I've been burned by the fire" means but he's way of referring to having your heart broken is so much more powerful and conveys the feeling so much poetically better. I will never understand how one person could write so many great lyrics like Tom did. It was truly a gift and this song is just unbelievable.

Listen to this song done on the new DVD concert with Stevie Nicks, IMHO it's a by far better duet that Stop Dragging my Heart Around.

This song reaches deep, the pain you hear and feel is real and biting.

They ought to re-release it and watch it climb the charts!!!

This was written for Stevie Nicks to sing, but she turned it down, saying that it wasn't a woman's song. So TP recorded it himself, and that made it a song about a man whose lover has left him for someone richer.

He calls himself an insider because he (now) understands all the planning and scheming she did, and that she never really loved him as she said she did. That's why he's 'the one who oughta know'. He's now sadder and wiser - but she left him with nothing and he doesn't seem to know what to do next.

    My Interpretation

This song is about unrequited love male or female. It evokes a memory of that one beautiful person in your life that you could not have. For whatever reason it was just never meant to be.They never thought the same way about you as you felt about them. Maybe it was because they belonged to your best friend. You met them too late. But, when you went to a party and they were there, you spent hours talking to them and just wanting to be in their presence. And when you drove home alone when the party was over. You wound your way through the streets with tears in your eyes. One is the loneliest number that you'll ever do.

    My Opinion

This song sounds too specific to be just something Mr. Petty invented from whole cloth but, apparently, he did. The protagonist seems divided between blaming the woman he loves, her "twisted friends", or the man she's apparently in love with. I intrigued by the lines "I bet you're his masterpiece / I'll bet your his self-control" because I have no idea what they mean but they evoke an image of someone who engages other people's emotions for purely selfish reasons.

The Night We Met
Lord Huron
This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines: "Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet" So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other: "I had all and then most of you" Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart "Some and now none of you" Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship. This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"

Just A Little Lovin'
Dusty Springfield
I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example: "'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/

Magical
Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.

Plastic Bag
Ed Sheeran
“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it. “I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
