You think you're gonna take her away
With your money and your cocaine
You keep thinkin' that her mind is gonna change
But I know everything is okay

She's gonna listen to her heart
It's gonna tell her what to do
She might need a lot of loving
But she don't need you

You want me to think that I'm being used
You want her to think it's over
You can't see it doesn't matter what you do
Buddy, you don't even know her

She's gonna listen to her heart
It's gonna tell her what to do
She might need a lot of loving
But she don't need you

And you just can't creep up behind her
And you can't understand that she's my girl
She's my girl, aah

Yeah, she's gonna listen to her heart
It's gonna tell her what to do
She might need a lot of loving
But she don't need you, ooh

Actually this song is written to Ike Turner from Tom Petty. While Tom was on the road, his wife (Jane)was at a party with Denny Cordell (Tom's producer)at Ike Turners house. According to Jane, she was cornered by Ike in a scary circumstance. That was the idea behind the song and they actually played it quite a bit on stage before they cut it. There was some controversey about the the song lyrics - at the time, stations didn't want to play the song because of the reference to cocaine - which was a big deal to Tom because he felt as if taking the word cocaine and replacing it with what the management wanted (Champagne) wasn't the same and didn't carry the same weight - Tom held his ground and the lyrics remained the same. Great song.

Don't know why no one's commented to this song. I believe it's on tom petty's greatest hits if i'm not mistaken? I think this song means, don't listen to anyone, just your heart, it knows what to do. You don't need other people to tell you what to do. --Listen to your heart.

I am a huge Petty fan and this is my favorite song. I love the guitar in this one. I can't believe no one has commented on it either, though I see not many people have commented on any of his huge catalog of tunes. What a shame that more people haven't taken the time to listen to this artist that has been around for over 30 years. To me this song means that his woman has temporarily taken an interest in someone else but HE knows that she'll come back cause the only one who can give her the lovin' that she requires is HIM, and he knows it!

This song is awsome! Tom Petty rules. I think the song is just about tellin some guy who is after your girl to stop because she loves you and can't be bought with "money and concaine"

the lack of comments are probably due to the rather obivious nautre of the song and I think you all are on track here. The song is definatly about not worrying about some guy hitting on your girl because she knows your the right choice in her heart.

Best Rickenbacker guitar track next to a few REM songs. The meaning's obvious, and let's keep it that way.

This song is about trust. But, can trust exist in face of the Coolidge Effect? Coolidge Effect: In biology and psychology, the term Coolidge effect describes a phenomenon – seen in nearly every species in which it has been tested – whereby males show continuously high sexual performance given the introduction of new receptive females. Answer: Simply, all one must do is listen to the devotion of his or her heart.
