I think this song is about leaving home for the first time, possibly against your parents wishes who are worried that you are going to forget where you came from. The writer is trying to convince his parents that he will never forgot what it is most important to him - family.

KristieisRad, i will agree with you that the song doesnt have to be about a girl, buy it has to be at least about a close friend. There are two many times that he says "we" and "us" is even used. Think about it like this. They get into a fight due to new information and all the convinction that the other person had for the realationship disapears (ice cubes in an ocean).
The corus is quoting the other person. Personally, it sounds to me like they had a disagreement over an opinion, maybe a political issue. The other person obivously has many people on their side and they are ganging up on the writer. Or, some sort of hypocritic attitude.
The second verse admits there are still feelings there, but its to hard to overcome this new found obstacle and its just not going to work because the other person can't get off their high horse and find common ground. Muddy waters dont make for smooth sailing. |

I think this song is all about the innocence of your first love, and how you can't even imagine it not working out. I like this song alot, and brings up some great nostaligic moments for me personally. |

I think the name says it all. Its one of my favorite quotes ever. Life keeps going, with some great parites and then some that compeletly suck, but there is always more to come. All REK songs tell a story and this a great one, but I agree with Kichkinet, he has better. Im from Texas, and this guy is one of the most underrated performers outside the state. I go to school in Alabama and all my friends like him almost as much as I do. |

the song was in the movie Oragne County, not the TV show, well I guess it could have been on the TV show as well, but the OC reference is about the movie. Good song though. |

the lack of comments are probably due to the rather obivious nautre of the song and I think you all are on track here. The song is definatly about not worrying about some guy hitting on your girl because she knows your the right choice in her heart. |

Awesome song! I think its about realizing one day that you are so far from type of person that you want to be and its time to suck it up and get back to the people who care about you. Favorite line in the song "And if you follow your feelings
And you follow your dreams
You might find the forest there in the trees."
Its one of those songs i like to listen to when im feeling a little down. |

This is one of my favorite TP songs, maybe cause im just a hopeless romantic. I think its a great analogy of a awesome relationship. Can your love stand up to a trial? And of course some bad things are going to happen, but when you are really in love it just doesnt matter. |

i dont think the song has anything to do with religion, the holy water makes me think of hypocracy. High horse=holier than thou attitude. Maybe the argument was over something that she herself did in the past and he forgave her. Then he does it and she flips and they break up and all her friends think he is an ass. |

I agree with you, beulah, I think that mercer often wishes the world had more of the child-like innocence. Its a theme in New Slang to me as well.
The song references that feeling and the memories that come when you go back home or a place you frequently visited in your youth.
The song defiantly seems like it is about an old memory and reflection, but the last verse seems really randomly placed to me. I thought for a while maybe the words were coming from his grandfather kind of giving him advice about a failed relationship, but I dont think that fully explains it. |

The song is about a guy who all of sudden realizes the loss of innocence that has occured in his life and especially in his relationship. When your a kid you just love life and have all these high expectations, then one day you wake up and realize that you have settled into a less than lofty routine, as has everyone around you. He wishes he was back in a time where he was supposedly happy, the feeling you get when you first meet someone that you can see yourself spending the rest of your life with. However, now that he's older (gold theeth) he realizes that he never was really that happy, he just hadn't figured it out yet. |

Personaly, and its just my opinion, but I really think that he has wanted to leave her for some time and never been ever to compeletly end it. I think he doesnt want to hurt her at first, but then realizes that he is going to have to alienate himself entirely to move on.
Its like when you do the whole breakup and getback together thing that freaking sucks and you know you shouldnt do it, but everyone does.
It's a great breakup song though, and I love all the train inferences because breakups are just a huge trainwreck. |

All the people who are calling all southerners stupid and ignorant are doing the same thing. The fact is that racism does still exists and probably always will; maybe not between blacks and whites, but between different cultural groups. It really is human nature to be prone to like people that are similar to you. I'm not trying to justify it at all, but its just part of life. Plus, if you want to try to tell me that people in the North didn’t do the same thing to blacks up there, then your retarded. The Northerners may have stopped sooner, but that’s probably because they had more industry and didn’t need the massive amounts of laborers that it takes to run an agrarian economic system. |
