I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.

this song is so awesome, its one of the first songs that actually got me into dmb. its like misinterpreting signs from a crush and then finding out what you thought, was totally wrong. and then of course feeling like a -fool-...Definitely a good song!
This is such an emotionally correct song. Its clear a lot of people can identify with this song, i certainly can. The meaning is fairly clear, a man thinks a woman likes him and fantasises about them being together, but doesn't want to take the plunge and ask her about it. He suspects and later finds out that the whole thing was in his head (or was it...?)
Easily one of dave's best lyrics and one i can identify with so easily 'The silence in me screaming won't you come and get me!' So true.
Good music too. The riff used is similar to that of message in a bottle by the police, (it uses the same intervals but starts a fret down). It gives the song a very POlicey stingy feel.
This song is exactly what I think of when I think of my current crush...it is percise in the way i feel and, descriptive of my unsure actions that I am going to take...I love it but at the same time it makes me feel...not really sad, I don't know...I can't put my finger on it....

I agree with everyone else. It's exactly how I feel when I think of the person I'm attracted too. The way you wish every little detail somehow illustrates a hopeful relationship. The song makes me feel bitter to the one I love, but at the same time foolish for leading myself on.

this song is so great. this situation sucks like no other though. I tototally feel dave in this song. you think you saw something, but you dont want to say anything. my favorite line in this song is "but the silence in me is screaming". that feeling is one i think we can all relate to. dave captures the essence of an uncurable crush like no other.
