I love this song so much. I first read it in a book of Paul McCartney poetry and I wasn't sure if he ever made a song from it. Now that I've heard it, I love it even more! I especially like the comparison of lovers to soldiers in the last stanza. It's true, loving someone is dangerous, but if you don't take the risk, there's nothing to live for. Just my thoughts.

In the Flaming Pie album booklet, it says that Hurricaine Bob had cut out the electricity in the recording studio where Paul was, so he picked up the acoustic and wrote this song. To make a song like this out of the blue in those circumstances is nothing short of amazing!
I think the song is just about unconditional, full on, love.
I read that Paul wrote the song about an old movie about two soldiers. Male soldiers ,who fought togather and were secertly in love. the one dies on the battle field in the other's arms. And before you rag on me. I'm a huge Beatle Fan! listen to it again. They made a American movie called Wings in 29. the two guys weren't gay , but they loved each other and the death scene was heartbreaking and quite shocking for the time.
@ronsimba I don't know where you read that McCartney wrote the song about two soldiers who secretly loved each other. You know, like women, men can have a love for another man without being in love. Soldiers are often heard to say there is a bond between warriors - a band of brothers - but it doesn't mean they are gay. There is too much these days about men being gay when they really are not gay, merely expressing the kind of love women frequently say they wish men could do.

Sir Paul McCArtney played this song in his USSR tour! And while he's singing the middle part, President Putin, Russia's president, came! I mean, wow! Paul said, "I kept on playing the chords and I kept on singing the song." I mean, he should be nervous! The Russian President! Watching him with awe! It was shocking for Paul too!
After his tour, President Putin and Paul McCartney had a walk. THE WALK. I Mean, it's so memorable for me! Paul McCartney of The Beatles and the Russian President! WOW.

I think this song is one more statement by Paul of the only thing worth living for: loving another with all your heart, and being loved in return.
That is, if you're an atheist, or agnostic like myself. Otherwise you ought to be glorifying god :)

when i first listened to the "flaming pie" cd, this song immediately caught my attention. the music is so simple and light, and the lyrics are beautiful.
