I heard "kiwanis," and it would make the title of the song a play on words, but yeah it doesn't make as much sense as koalas. |

on the recent "itunes originals" with Flaming Lips, Wayne talks about the meaning of this song. Basically, it's about being exactly who you are, whoever, however, whichever type of person you are, BE IT 100% Turn it on and turn it all the way up! I had never thought about this song that way before, I kind of agreed with previous posts, but re-reading the lyrics after hearing Wayne's explanation, it definitely makes sense. It's also cool, because the song can really mean whatever you want, so for me, it's like 2 diff songs now! |

How do they do it? 20+ years later, and the Flaming Lips are still putting out some of the most incredible, progressive music out there. This song is incredible. |

No comments?! This is one of my favorite on the album. It really feels like an alien reporting back to his superiors about the nature of humans. OR, keeping with the "embryonic" theme, it could be a spirit telling an unborn fetus how the world is going to be. Basically telling it that the world can be anything humans want it to be, "If" they decide. |

Yes! There are a lot of "she" references on the album. I'm assuming the lyrics are about the girl on the cover, and the whole concept of "embryonic" being related to birth, the girl coming out of a vagina, etc. I love concept albums because you really get to see an entire story unfold, like a movie, but not so obvious. |

I've been listening to this song a lot, and I really agree with you that it's about him wishing he could warn his "younger self." Wishing he could go back in time and warn himself not to trust the evil people.
I've been feeling this way too lately. |

This is freaking awesome. I came here to check the lyrics because I thought he said "Bill Hicks," but wasn't sure. Now I get it; even the title of the song is a reference to Hicks' comedy bit about people in advertising and marketing. One of the greats! Sad to see him go, but glad he could live on in one of my favorite band's songs.
Anyone who hasn't heard of Bill Hicks should go right now to amazon and order some of his DVDs or CDs, you will NOT be dissapointed. There just isn't much of that type of intellectual humor anymore (David Cross, Doug Stanhope, Patton Oswalt aside). Today's comedy scene is all about "git'er done" and all that other mediocre, comedy-as-a-product mentality. As is the case with music, movies, etc. |

| Modest Mouse – Autumn Beds Lyrics
|
wow, i can't believe people don't think this song is about death.
"autumn" is typically a reference to the end of one's life. the "autumn years" it's as if your life is represented by a calendar year, you're a baby in a brand new year, then spring comes and you discover life, summer is middle age, and as you wind down your life, autumn comes.
He's talking about not wanting to die, or "sleep in his autumn bed"
The trial is another metaphor for life/death. Everyone's life is a "trial" and at the end of it, we ALL get the same sentence...death.
the song IS a little repetetive tho. they couldve thrown in another verse or something. no complaints tho!
anyone else see my point of view on the meaning of the song? |

You're a dumb motherfucker zero. 169 dead Americans (a good portion of those were children in the building's daycare) is "small"
you're fucking retarded, i hope your family is killed in a terrorist attack someday. |

god, i hate this song.
he must have been in a hurry to write a song one day and thought, "well, 'we fly balloons in a fuel called love' sure is catchy...what line should come next...? ah, fuck it, i'll just repeat that line over and over for 3 minutes and we'll call it a day."
the guy must have been in a hurry to get back to sucking cocks. |

Tool has fallen off with this album. We have 3 1/3 kick ass albums to remember them by at least. I mean c'mon, is maynard really advocating that we don't watch the news? the whole message is the antithesis of what Tool is usually all about. "Wow, maynard, you're sooo smart. come teach us how to live. i'll put my blind faith in your illogical songs and you'll be the next jesus." yeah, the world seems cruel if you watch the fuckin news all day....BUT I DON'T. get back to writing hardcore songs about anal-fisting and other vague metaphors. the new album is just a little self-righteous, don't ya think? |

Why the different sounding voice on this song? He sounds like the guy from Mars Volta. Anyways, i think Tool may have fallen short with this new album. It just doesn't have the spectrum of their previous albums. There is nothing that really "rocks" or any good meditative songs. I have been listening to their entire catalog for the last two months to prepare for the new album and it was kindve a letdown. I mean c'mon, in Vicarious he actually says, "la la lala la la." Maybe this album is a joke on all of us. |

Madmouser, my interpretation is that "it took a lot of negative and bad life experiences to make me the jaded jerk/asshole that i have become, but at the same time, i don't think my experiences are unique to me, and therefor most everybody else is a jaded jerk/asshole too and could easily and equally fuck you over just like i would. |

you face-value jerks! why do some people have to have artistic-creativity spoon-fed to them. have you guys ever heard of symbolism being reflected in music lyrics? have you guys ever heard of the beatles? have you ever heard of actual artistic expression before? do you fools actually think that the eagle's "hotel california" was about a hotel with some monsters? if you're looking for straight-forward mind-numbing music, go buy a kid rock album or britney's newest shit bomb. what they lack in depth, they more than make up for in shallowness(play on words)(some of you will get that, and sadly most of you won't) ROCK ON OAR!!!!!
"why can't you stay five more minutes alone?"
