this song has the best jam ever. they were recording the song and mick taylor kept playing after all the others stopped. they picked their instruments back up and he led them into a great five minute jam. |

this song to me is about the british occupation of northern ireland. while U2 obviously does not support the IRA etc. [just listen to sunday bloody sunday], i would say that they are opposed to the british presence.
the stranger and the soldier are the same person. 'he looked at me like i was the one who should run' to me is the british exercising control over the irish people.
this is often my favorite U2 song.
'and i really don't mind sleeping on the floor
but i couldn't sleep after what i saw'
that is probably my favorite U2 line ever. however i don't know where it fits into my whole british occupation theory. |

RS41, a short history lesson...
the easter rising of 1916 did not start the violence in northern ireland, it began a six year military campaign by the irish that finally forced the british to realize that they did not belong. however, in the treaty that followed, the english refused to give up six of the northern counties [because of their dominant protestant population]. because of the civil war that followed [and death of two of the most forward thinking irishmen of the time], northern ireland has been a war zone for the last thirty years.
at the moment, the ira has stopped fighting and the english have realized that the interests of fringe ira groups are not the interests of the northern irish people. what now needs to happen is for the irish of NI who want to join the republic to wait a decade or two until the population shifts and the majority of ulster is no longer pro-british. the catholics of ulster are no longer lacking civil rights. they need to retain the patience they are currently expressing. |

i love this song. it is amazing on many levels. the guitar work, the lyrics, the guitar work. while it is not their best song, it might be my favorite. or while it is their best song, it might not be my favorite. i don't know.
