October
And the trees are stripped bare
Of all they wear
What do I care?
October
And kingdoms rise
And kingdoms fall
But you go on and on
And the trees are stripped bare
Of all they wear
What do I care?
And kingdoms rise
And kingdoms fall
But you go on and on

a video interview (see below) from a concert in Hattem, Netherlands, in 1982, U2 were asked what the meaning of October was. "October is an image," said Bono. He continued:
"We've been through the '60s, we've been through a time where things were in full bloom. We had fridges and cars, and we sent people to the moon. Everybody thought how great mankind was. And now, as you go through the '70s and the '80s, it's a colder time of year; it's after the harvest, the trees are stripped bare and you can see things. We've finally realized, maybe we weren't so smart after all, now that there's millions of unemployed people, now that we've used the technology that we've been blessed with to build bombs for war machines. October is an ominous word."
This is the hidden track on the Greatest Hits set right?
Yes, the song was an added bonus for fans.
It's a simple song with a powerful meaning. Basically, seasons change, things happen and God goes on.
this song is beautiful..makes me think of my mother who lies in norway, under a tree. it's really beautiful there in october, with all the colors and leaves...
October is my favorite U2 album as of late, and this song is a predominant reason.
this song is so beautiful and intense. I was unsure if it was aout God or his mother. Listening to the tone of it i feel it is probably about his mother as he sounds almost tearful.
eeeee me likey ;D
i have heard that this is about the death of bono's mother. one of my favorite U2 songs, perhaps because not many people know it.
Simple yet elegant. The song if you all are still wondering is off of the album October, so it wasn't actually any kind of added bonus, it was the title track for an album. Other than that U2aholic in my opinion got it right. Also one of my favorite U2 songs.
