Jig-Saw Puzzle Lyrics
There's a tramp sittin' on my doorstep
Tryin' to waste his time
With his mentholated sandwich
He's a walking clothesline
And here comes the bishop's daughter
On the other side
She looks a trifle jealous
She's been an outcast all her life
Me, I'm waiting so patiently
Lying on the floor
I'm just trying to do my jig-saw puzzle
Before it rains anymore
Oh the gangster looks so fright'ning
With his Luger in his hand
When he gets home to his children
He's a family man
But when it comes to the nitty-gritty
He can shove in his knife
Yes he really looks quite religious
He's been an outlaw all his life
Me, I'm waiting so patiently
Lying on the floor
I'm just trying to do this jig-saw puzzle
Before it rains anymore
Me, I'm waiting so patiently
Lying on the floor
I'm just trying to do this jig-saw puzzle
Before it rains anymore
Oh the singer, he looks angry
At being thrown to the lions
And the bass player, he looks nervous
About the girls outside
And the drummer, he's so shattered
Trying to keep on time
And the guitar players look damaged
They've been outcasts all their lives
Me, I'm waiting so patiently
Lying on the floor
I'm just trying to do this jig-saw puzzle
Before it rains anymore
Oh, there's twenty-thousand grandmas
Wave their hankies in the air
All burning up their pensions
And shouting, "It's not fair!"
There's a regiment of soldiers
Standing looking on
And the queen is bravely shouting,
"What the hell is going on?"
With a blood-curdling "tally-ho"
She charged into the ranks
And blessed all those grandmas who
With their dying breaths screamed, "Thanks!"
Me, I'm just waiting so patiently
With my woman on the floor
We're just trying to do this jig-saw puzzle
Before it rains anymore
Tryin' to waste his time
With his mentholated sandwich

Some cigarettes used to be treated with MENTHOL [CH3C6H9(C3H7)OH], also known as "peppermint camphor," a white, crystalline, organic compound obtained from peppermint oil which acts as a mild anesthetic.

Mentholated Sandwich...picture a brown filtered cigarette butt squished between someones teeth....resembles a sandwich..the brown outside...the white filter inside. Thats how I always pictured it. ;)

@pshmell when a homless filtters blue rub alcohol with bread, then he drinks the alcohol, and then some times they eat the bread, so all the process becomes nonsense, but that bread is a methylated sandwich. 11 years later thats the answer haha.

My favourite song from beggar's baquet
same here... But I really hope it's not about sex. I felt like I could relate to the song - like it was about some kid who notices all this chaos and madness around him and all he wants to do is this simple thing, while he's waiting for something interesting, i guess, to happen for him. Ohhh well. Either way, it's a great song.
seems to me that the song is about the fact that life doesn't get any easier to understand as you get older...the puzzle remains the same
@peteaphid Is basically how I have also viewed the song. They just throw in all these other crazy visual images into the song.....hard to interpret....just as real life is.

love the slidy guitar and the whimsy feel
just another great song off of beggars
I just love the idea of the Queen massacring a horde of grandmas who thank her for the honour. Not big on deference, the Stones. Also the bishop's daughter feeling the tramp has beat her in the outcast stakes. Lovely pictures in this song. And almost certainly about sex, or what's his woman doing there? Helping with his jigsaw puzzle? Never heard it called that before!
Ehh...life is not grt and no one's life is either. Song just explains how no matter what side of life you come from there are always trials n tribulations. And how nobody really cares..leave me alone I am just trying to do this jigsaw puzzle..simple thing in a hectic but common world. First set of verses prob some fool waiting round for bad girl with love gone wrong...second some lowlife thug criminal either trying to do rgt for family cuz of hard times or just a general dirtbag...third is somewhat biographical with the references but again places everyone in the same boat...fourth is bout elders ranting n nagging bout stuff and prob shot at government in England. Don't give a shit because all I am trying to do is a jigsaw puzzle! I think the puzzle is a metaphor for life. Living it thru rain n shine!
@jason10983 Nice to see someone else out there that thinks the same as myself on this song. Is one of my favorites off of Beggers Banquet :)

i think this song is about a guy who is finally about to have sex a girl [she would be the jig-saw puzzle] but keeps getting interupted. this is one of the few songs mick and the boys have never played live, which is sad, i always imagined mick pointing to the various band members during the third verse of the song, but alas...
theve never played it live!!! madness, this is such a great uplifting song
