The end is the quiet, peaceful serenity after the suicide. The lyrics and theme are captured perfectly through the music, which is very rare. Transcendant art. |

This song not only sounds a lot like Jotun, it's a similiar theme also. In fact, most of TJR/Whoracle-era In Flames has the same theme (Whoracle less so, but theres a lot of it on there). Graveland sums the theme up best with "Burn the visionaire / Kill the ideologies / Mankind must die". |

The water represents the inevitable end to everything.
The rock is cling, whether material or mental-the rock is your new car, the rock is your wife. They are illusions by virtue of their impermanence-nothing is worth clinging to because they're all going to be swallowed by the Flood (everything dies, decays or otherwise etc).
The sun is a false hope. The sun is religion or afterlife or true love or any ultimate aspiration.
The song was written in a narrative first person style that depicts a person clinging to 'rocks' whatever they may be-it's universally applicable to the karma of human beings and being 'cleansed and purged in the water' represents the Buddhist idea that we should recognize all things as impermanent and free ourselves from the karmic cycle.
To illustrate, read the song as 'I'=you, 'rock'=Your wife, 'the flood' as her eventual and inevitable death (read as the songwriter's wife has just died). It's applicable to any sort of loss. |

I won't pretend to know how maynard thinks, feels, or writes. I'll just give my take on it.
Maynard usually writes (in my eyes) lyrics that can be generalized to the extreme. You can apply filling a void to anything, we live constantly trying to fill a void before we die. We're all empty, if you ever wanted something, money, love, fortune, fame, anything, that is a void that needs filling. Obviously I think the 'void' here is sexual but that's how Maynard writes, this metaphor can be applied to anyone and is layered heavily. A lot of his lyrics are like that. |
