| Over the Rhine – Rhapsodie Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
Well, in Greek Mythology, the names "Furies" and "Eumenidies" refer to the same three goddesses -- under the name "Furies" they were avenging goddesses carrying out the punishment of the gods upon mortals. Under the name "Eumenidies" (which means 'kindly ones' - whether ironically or not) they were fertility goddesses. What I felt this conveyed was circumstances that were seen as devestating to the relationship were actually means to a greater end than could ever be imagined. Don't things often turn out that way? What you thought would obliterate your best laid plans actually are the exact events that make you the happiest later on -- that you couldn't possibly have planned if you tried. I see this song as emerging from a trial of great proportions only to realize love that "beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, and endureth all things" -- not a complicated assessment, I know, but I don't believe the lyrics mean to be complicated :o) |

| Oh, what a delicious little song. Self-deprecating, tongue-in-cheek, sarcastic humor to be savored. | |
| Damien Rice – The Blower's Daughter Lyrics | 21 years ago |

Such a powerful song. This is the one that had me in tears when I saw him perform it live. I feel like it's stripping all the dramatics away from love and distilling it into it's most essential elements until one is powerless but to just drink in the object of affection...regardless of whether it is his own to have or not. It just is a pure need. |

| Sondre Lerche – On And Off Again Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
Sondre Lerche is, in a word, brilliant. His songs are simple and beautiful. This one, I feel is about just the instability of one who is trying to find himself and at the same time figure his place in a relationship he knows is a healthy one. Knowing that it's his own issues that cause him to want what he can't bring himself to understand the path he needs to take. delicious song. |

The music of this song is just incredible..."just like the fiction rushing in your riverbed" Absolute incredible poetry. |

| Jeff Buckley – Morning Theft Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| Entirely in agreement with mattsaunders. When I first heard that line, I had to stop and wrap myself around it. The cadence of it, the word choice (I'm an English major, can you tell??) the pure emotion of the music and the lyrics. Jeff... there are no words. | |
| Jeff Buckley – Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen cover) Lyrics | 22 years ago |
|
alright, here i go -- i agree with most people...this is a lament for the pain and harshness of relationships that seem like love at first, only flaking away into pain. as far as the biblical references, i feel that the first verse referring to david is the reach for love. the exultation in love and the praise of it -- the mounting emotion in attempting to uncover its mystery. the second verse references both david and samson -- two men who surrendered to women and lost a part of themselves through it (the throne is david, he didn't lose his kingdom, but he lost a closeness that he once had with god, eventually having to climb to earn it back -- the cutting of the hair is samson: he succumbed to delilah's lusty temptation and as a result lost his strengh to her betrayal) "Baby i've been here before/I've seen this room and i've walked this floor," he's experienced pain from relationships before and he recognizes this relationship as pain -- not the glorified end the woman is making it. the love used to be alive and passionate, a relationship in which he surrendered himself to the woman, but it has only grown cold and distant...the hallelujah is pain, it's emotion, it's heartache, it's a plea... who knows...i could be talking out of my ass |

i love the sheer simplicity of this song. the music is so minimalistic letting the her emotional voice pour through...transmitting the lyrics on a soul-bearing level. "and The Furies that i feared were Eumenides to lead me here " -- my favorite lines...you might need a rudimentary knowledge in greek mythology to realize their depth. |

i wanted justin to win before i heard this song... it's so terrible that i'm glad that he doesn't have to sell his voice to it. clichè lyrics...clichè music ::yawn:: kelly's got a typically decent voice (gained respect with that high note she put out...lost respect as she grunted through "respect") whatever...pop is pop...can't expect more |

| Cat Stevens – Oh Very Young Lyrics | 23 years ago |
|
This song is a plea. It reminds me of the first ten of Shakespeare's sonnets. The words ask the "very young" person to examine himself and open his eyes to what his existance is actually producing. His likef is like the "morning mist"...mortal like the rest of us. I see the person being sung to as a reckless person who is living for himself, maybe not even hurting himself persay, but falling into the "get ahead" mentality, striving to make a buck, but not make much else. The singer is exposing this flaw to the young man pleading for him to use his potential before time runs out, because empty goodbyes are the hardest. |

| Cat Stevens – O Caritas Lyrics | 23 years ago |

I loved this song for it's music first (essentially because, hey, i don't speak latin!) but after learning the translation from www.majicat.com, this song struck me deep. Especiall this past year, this song has become real on so many levels for me. The world is in turmoil at the hands of selfish and terrible men, but "love will always be with us". The music itself is so passionate. Latin language, Latin music...makes sense. There is a driving force behind this song that carries the listener. |

| Cat Stevens – The Wind Lyrics | 23 years ago |
|
"I let my music take me where my heart wants to go." This line has to be one of the best ever put to music. Music is such an essential part of the human soul that it can bring us where we need to be, instead of where our minds drag us. |

| DJ Sammy – Heaven [candlelight Version] Lyrics | 23 years ago |
|
The original song is by Bryan Adams...but I prefer this version for two reasons. This version is sung by a female (although the words are unchanged) which would make it a *little* easier for me to get personally into. The second is the music. This version is more fragile. While the original turn the chorus into a driving statment, the DJ Sammy version has a kind of naivity that makes it so much more approachable as a love song, to me, anyway. I really can't stand the verses though. The music and lyrics are cheesy and predictible to me. The musical progression of the chorus, however, is something that caught my emotions immediatly. I'm usually one for originals, but this cover isn't a bad take on the song...listen to the original though and decide for yourself! |

| This song is summer evenings at beachside restuarant strips; it's always made me think of concerts at Jones Beach Theater... | |
| Radiohead – High and Dry Lyrics | 23 years ago |

The first time I heard this song it was an a capella version by the Cornell Hangovers (absolutely beautiful arrangement) and I couldn't get enough of it. Then I recently read the Ayn Rand novel "The Fountainhead" and it brought this song to a new level for me. The book is central on an architect in the twenties who wants to live for his art and works for no one but the justice of the structure he is creating. I see this as him talking to the friend he had in high school who was the quintessential people pleaser and would create replicas of classic structures just to get his day in the sun and universial acceptance of his work. The book itself is an amazing piece of literature, and I feel this song flowing through it (even though the book predates the song by some fifty years). The words are such a plea; you can feel the heartache the person has watching the other sell parts of himself until he is an empty vessel. On another note, the perfect sequel to this song is "Evaporated" by Ben Folds Five (while I prefer the original "High and Dry", I prefer the Hangovers version of "Evaporated"). It's the one who's sung to in this song coming to the realization that he *has* thrown everything away. Put these two together on a playlist and cry...because everyone relates to it in some way. |

| Norah Jones – Wait Lyrics | 23 years ago |
|
This has to be the closest to a jazz/hip-hop hybrid that I've ever heard. The lyrics flow like a melodic rap and the interlude has guitar riff and a great vibraphone solo. The bass line keeps the "upbeat mysterious" quality throughout the song. As far as the lyrics go, I feel like it's a woman singing to the indecisive man she wants to be with. He's floating around with other women who do him wrong and are just wrong for him all together, and she's offering him a safe haven to escape. She's trying to get him to open up to her, ("Talk if you want") but is cool if he doesn't ("if you dont, just change the station") because she want's him so much that she can *wait* ("I've got patience"). A feeling I could identify with wholly at one point... Download the song...I haven't seen it on any of her CDs and to tell you the truth, I really don't know for what or when it was recorded, but the unique sound is definitely worth hearing. |

| Norah Jones – Peace (Horace Silver cover) Lyrics | 23 years ago |
|
This is my new favorite song (it even inspired me to buy her CD...i *never* buy CDs!) While I know that this is a site devoted to lyrics, I have to say that the music is what made me fall in love with this song. It's graceful and classy with beautiful piano that is reminiscent of a restuarant pianist in the twenties. Absolutely beautiful. |
