Rod Stewart – Lost Paraguayos Lyrics 3 years ago
Amazed no one has weighed in on the lyrics to this song. It's a small-sale masterpiece, buy (like the Stones' Stray Cat Blues) might offend modern sensibilities. But it's damn funny.

Thoughts: Although printed as "I like your laugh and a hot romance." it always sounds to me like he's singe "I like your laugh and your awkward math" (which I assume he's referring to the age difference of the couple.

(For that matter, I hear the girl's "ridiculous age" would start a "sweet outrage" as opposed to a "state outrage.")

Also, "I'm much obliged for the pure white ride" is a great reminder - along with this entire song - of how joyfully decadent the early 70s were.

Like Stewart said in another classic tune "Laugh it up, you didn't ask to come here anyway."

Drive-By Truckers – Hell No, I Ain't Happy Lyrics 7 years ago
Awesome song. I can completely relate to being both so angry that you think about "killing a man" one night and then -- one time zone away -- being calmed by the seven am beauty of the "mountains of Montana".

@[laythewoodyard:28829] I was at the same show and screamed for joy when he played htis song.

My take on this song is it's a quilt of memories, good and bad, from his childhood. Being made so fearful to use an outhouse, a kid will hold it in for hours.

It's great song and an excellent example of what Hood does best: finding deep philosophy in the simplest things.

Drive-By Truckers – Primer Coat Lyrics 7 years ago
This is great late-period Cooley. Many of his songs are mysteries, but in this case, I think this song is (initially) told from a son's perspective watching his dad get older.

The kid is reflecting on the old man's views of his mom, whom dad long ago divorced, dismissing her as a "basket case." But now it appears Dad may be losing it because Mom can "survive" under the present circumstances.

The narrative switches as the father reflects back to when he actually cared for her back when they were kids hanging out in parking lots.

The final verse is back in the son's frame of mind. His sister is about to wed. His mom is focused on planning the event, but his old man seems damaged by the years of dysfunction and distance. The best he can do is stare through his own taillights as he moves towards his inevitable demise.

(This from the perspective of a 58-year old single parent whose watching his kids turn into adults.)

The Replacements – Never Mind Lyrics 7 years ago
I realize I will be trashed for this, but here goes ..

Knowing there is even a book on the Mats called "All Over But the Shouting", I'm still not convinced that's what Westerberg sings. It has always sounded to me that he is singing "..I'm all over with the shouting, it's just a waste of time." Which makes more sense given the context of the song. As such, I've always interpreted it to mean that he's casting aside the trappings of being a rock star, whose opinion is "more or less" as worthless as the next guy's.

Bruce Springsteen – Wild Billy's Circus Story Lyrics 7 years ago
Agree with Catactbabe: Great early glimspe into Springsteen the writer. If you catch clips of live performances from this time period you can see the influence of Van Morrison. This song does that: creates this whole weird, self-contained world around Springsteen's childhood haunts (like Morrison did with Belfast.) Plus the way he sings phrases like "miss eeee bimbo's scorn" are brilliant. Its easy to understand why critics were falling all over him in the early days.

Steve Earle – Darlin' Commit Me Lyrics 8 years ago
This is such a great song. Nearly forgotten, but it's flawless. I'm a longtime Earle fan and (mostly) enjoy his heavier stuff, but sometimes I miss his outlaw days.

Drive-By Truckers – Sandwiches for the Road Lyrics 8 years ago
I can't believe no one else has commented on this song. Even though the guy in the song is probably deranged (and knows it), he's got his pride. A real statement of purpose. Someday, Hood should put all of his songs about damaged musicians and hangerson in one collection (Come Back Little Star,Living Bubba, Grand Canyon, etc.). Hood has a real gift for writing warts-an-all portraits of these lost souls.

Drive-By Truckers – Panties in Your Purse Lyrics 8 years ago
I agree with the previous writer: There is a lot more going on in this song than the title suggests. It's a heart breaker at the end. I think his point is the chain of dysfunction goes on and on. The girl in the song is a mess; her mom knows it because Mom was probably a mess too. Like the best Cooley songs, it rings true.
