Melanie Thornton – No Tears Lyrics 5 years ago
Not sure if this might be obvious, but I feel that this was written as an autobiographical song about Melanie "breaking free" from La Bouche and going on her own, but for her own good, and for her career ("Blindly I'd follow, trustingly/And never question why/Unaware of the power inside of me/No tears to cry/No sad goodbyes/I'm spreading my wings/And I'm ready to fly"). Despite all of the hard work that she'd undertaken to make it as a member of La Bouche, she'd channel it to help her go for the chance to make it big as the star of her own show ("The struggle and pain I won't forget/It's made a mark on me/But with all of the strength I possess/I've gotta go for the chance of a life so sweet"). The line about "This millenium will be my time to be free" could also be an autobiographical part about her having been a member of La Bouche in the '90s, and making it on her own in the 2000s. Amazing song.

@[rndmr2:26495] I did the same thing when I first submitted the lyrics for the rest of the Letter from Egypt tracks, as I went with both the lyric booklet and what I could hear on the tracks themselves, but all of them default to these incomplete ones. I have no clue why, but I wish they were able to be corrected.

Morten Harket – Los Angeles Lyrics 6 years ago
I kind of think that this song is the aftermath of a strain or an estrangement between two lovers in a relationship ("You waited for me/When I was strong/You never called/You waited long"), and despite the estrangement, the singer knows that both people in the relationship still love each other ("You love me still/I love you, too"). He recalls a moment from the past in which the problems hadn't arisen, and longs to return to that moment in time ("So come with me/To that room by the sea/With a view of the moon and Los Angeles/You're beautiful back then/God, you're beautiful now"). He also references what possibly split them apart ("Yeah I was strong/I had no choice"), possibly meaning that he had more faith in the relationship than his partner had. So, in my eyes, it's a song about a singer expressing to get over a quandary with his lover, and his desire to return to the past, when the relationship was great and beautiful; thus, the "room by the sea/with a view of the moon and Los Angeles" represents their relationship at its peak. One of my favorites from "Wild Seed".

Actually, I've got an improved interpretation now. It's essentially a prayer, asking God to let the singer sleep in peace (hence the title), and the singer asks for a peaceful, dreamy slumber ("I'll fall into this sea of sleep/This sea of dreams, so red and deep").

Morten Harket – Half in Love Half in Hate Lyrics 6 years ago
@[AkibaRed:24551] I personally feel that the song is about a soured or broken relationship between the singer and a spouse. In my view, the lyrics “Since you raised that wall around you/Since I lost you/I have found you strange” reflect that this person in the singer’s life has effectively walled herself emotionally away from the singer, and this break in communications/togetherness has caused her to almost become alien to the singer, so much so that he feels he doesn’t recognize her - “And I could swear for sure/Haven't seen that girl before”; additionally, the lyrics “Hey, you're looking strange/And everything you do/Girl, it seems arranged/Dark words drift away/I have nothing more to say” could also represent said alienation between the singer and the other person, in that anything she does seems forced, and he can see through her wooden demeanor. Thus, in the lyrics “There’s only one thing left to do/I have to face this other you”, the singer givesin and has to deal with her, despite her being so different from what he thought she was. Either way, I think this is a great song, and this is all just my interpretation.

Love this song...I feel somewhat like I can relate to it, too. First of Morten’s solo discography that I heard, and I loved it! I will never regret finding his solo work.

I think both interpretations- of the subject either being God or a girl - are interesting, even though I personally like to think that the song is about a soured or broken relationship between the singer and a spouse. In my view, the lyrics “Since you raised that wall around you/Since I lost you/I have found you strange” reflect that this person in the singer’s life has effectively walled herself emotionally away from the singer, and this break in communications/togetherness has caused her to almost become alien to the singer, so much so that he feels he doesn’t recognize her - “And I could swear for sure/Haven't seen that girl before”; additionally, the lyrics “Hey, you're looking strange/And everything you do/Girl, it seems arranged/Dark words drift away/I have nothing more to say” could also represent said alienation between the singer and the other person, in that anything she does seems forced, and he can see through her wooden demeanor, Although, I think that these certain lyrics could also work for the God interpretation, that since the singer has lost his faith (or experienced a moment in which he distanced himself from his faith), everything that he had once believed as being true seems so alien, that he doesn’t recognize those same beliefs anymore. Either way, I think this is a great song, and this is all just my interpretation.

Morten Harket – Quiet Lyrics 6 years ago
The song is basically the singer detailing a first love that never lasted (The snow has covered every track/From me to you/And you will never know, my love/What I think of you), and yet, that love still sticks with him (Things are quiet now/When I think of you/Have you made a life/Or are you quiet, too?), especially when he sees her around (Saw you walking by the place/Where we used to meet/Turn your head and disappear/Onto busy street). The first lyric of the chorus can also represent time separating the two and covering their former bonds. One of my favorites off this album, and one of the best love songs of all time in my eyes.

@[AkibaRed:22943] Actually, I don't feel that it's about being weary of life, in reference to my previous comment. It could just be a person who is willing to accept fate, or they are looking to reflect on life before they move on to better things/pass away (So take me where I can meet the familiar unknown/We are always ever home/Always ever home).

Morten Harket – East Timor Lyrics 6 years ago
This song is (kind of) in the same boat as "Brodsky Tune", but is a softer song that, in my opinion, is Morten trying to call attention to the plight of the East Timorese and pledging his heartfelt sympathies for the people of the country (Bury my heart on East Timor/In coral sands/On golden shores). He also describes the treatment of the East Timorese by the occupying government (Mark them as fools/Let ignorance rule) and the public's general blind eye to the plights of the citizens (Leave them stranded on their island/Treat them to the tune of silence) in a similar vein to "Brodsky Tune".

Morten Harket – Brodsky Tune Lyrics 6 years ago
This song might be Morten's expression of anger concerning the bloodshed in Bosnia (after all, the original poem by Joseph Brodsky was "Bosnia Tune"). Also, I feel that his additions of the "La la la, la" in the chorus adds on to the general message of people expressing blind ignorance to the carnage in Bosnia (adding on to lyrics such as "People die as you elect/New apostles of neglect"), almost as if they're covering their ears and saying "La la la" to block out the news of the war and ignore it completely.

Morten Harket – Listening Lyrics 6 years ago
In my opinion, the song is from the perspective of a person who is trying to look out for a girl he's with, but she will not open herself up to him and tell of her problems, so much so that their relationship is mostly superficial (I know your tastes in food and wine/But never really what's on your mind). Despite this barrier, he still wants to reach out to her and help her out (If you want me/ I will listen to your words; Just talk/I'm listening). Additionally, he notices her problems (See the tension in your face/Feel the nerves when we embrace), but she has kept her problems bottled up inside (What emotions do you hide?/All the years of silent thought).

Morten Harket – Brother Lyrics 6 years ago
The song is said to be based on the memoir of a former extremist who left his sect, but I feel that it can generally describe a person's sorrow at letting someone in their life drift away from a divisive moment (You and I, we lost our way/Differences of mind), and their desire to keep that person in their life, but expressing a warning that they will not overtake the singer and influence their mind (You're welcome in my town/But if you try to force my compass 'round/I'm gonna stand you down).

Morten Harket – Lay Me Down Tonight Lyrics 6 years ago
Kind of going on a limb with this interpretation, but it might work.
The song feels as if it's a kind of lullaby (hence the Norwegian version on Vogts Villa being called "Vuggevise"), where the singer is describing falling into sleep, and is expressing the feeling of going into sleep and leaving his soul to rest (I'll leave my spirit, leave my words).

Morten Harket – Ready to Go Home Lyrics 6 years ago
To me, this song is about a person who is very weary of life (Take this soul to Heaven's door), ready to accept fate, and hope to end up in Heaven for relief (Lord, shine a light for me/I'm waiting to be called). The singer is tired of life, and just wants the relief of death to come to him.

Morten Harket – A Kind Of Christmas Card Lyrics 6 years ago
The song is about a girl in Hollywood, who feels unhappy with her life (This place is as steady as I feel myself) and is becoming disillusioned in the city (hence the alternate title "Burning Out Again"). Despite her not wanting her family to know of her presence in the city (You're not supposed to know/Where your daughter is), she is still returning to the norms of her past (In my little bedroom, mama, on my knees/That's where I'm at/Down in Los Angeles), possibly as a method to cope.

Morten Harket – Out of My Hands Lyrics 6 years ago
This song kind of reminds me of "Ready to Go Home", in that it sounds like a song of a person who is ready to accept their fate, and is weary of life. That's just the feeling I've got from it. I'm sure other people have different views of the song.

Morten Harket – Keep the Sun Away Lyrics 6 years ago
The song, to me, seems like it's about the narrator, who has gone through a terrible time with an abusive significant other (My black-eyed love has left me bruised/Broken and battered, and feeling confused), and that he is no longer a stronger person, but a more passive one because of the damage done to him (A captain on his sinking ship/King into battle, stiff upper lip). Not too sure about the "Rain down on freezing bones" verses, though...

A-Ha – Dragonfly Lyrics 7 years ago
This sounds a lot like it could be about the singer promising another person that they will stay together through thick and thin, and that they will always be there for said person. In my opinion, this sounds like a parent telling their child that they will remain with them despite what happens later on, and that the child needn't worry; he/she should "just fly" as a "dragonfly". One of my favorites from Lifelines.

Morten Harket – Darkspace Lyrics 7 years ago
One of my all-time favorites from Morten Harket's solo career.
To me, this is a nice, romantic song about a man's love (In the darkspace, when I close my eyes, I see your face shining, like the moon in the night), and how this love is a part of his life (You're with me, wherever I go).

A-Ha – Birthright Lyrics 7 years ago
One of my absolute favorites from "Analogue" and from a-ha in general. To me, the song tells of someone who is deciding to part and blaze their own trail on their own (But who's gonna come with you tonight/Who's gonna tell you it's alright/Everything changes over time/Just like wine), but that the singer won't stop the person from leaving because "it's [their] birthright" to make their own choices. I'm probably missing more from this song, but I'm open to hearing other interpretations.

A-Ha – You'll Never Get Over Me Lyrics 7 years ago
This sounds quite like a couple that is polarized and about to separate ("Whenever our voices speak, it's never our minds that meet"). The repetitions of Morten's voice calling, "You'll never get over me", whilst Lauren Savoy sings, "I will get over you", almost sound like the guy (Morten's part) is trying to convince the girl to stay, whilst she defiantly proclaims that she can get over him. If anything, it's a song about a relationship that is breaking down, but one partner does not want the other to break it off.

A-Ha – Keeper of the Flame Lyrics 7 years ago
To me, it sounds a lot like someone abandoning an uninteresting life for an entirely new one ("Four more years and I am out of here") in year's time. The dissatisfied singer is longing for a different life despite all of the respites of his/her former life ("Give it up for vinyl days, kicking back from school...Give it up for summer days, laying in the grass"). Also, in my opinion, the "You could've/should've been the keeper of the flame" repetitions could symbolize some other voice/person's dissatisfaction with the singer's choice to leave the situation he is in. Not my best interpretation: just some thoughts.
