I have to agree completely.
I was going to leave my own interpretation/review, but you covered everything so well, I'm simply going to direct friends to yours. 😏

St. Vincent – Rattlesnake Lyrics 3 years ago
My first impression, as a song writer myself, is that this sounds like a literal real day-in-the-life experience.

Yet, one could still find it to be a metaphor for coming of age free & unafraid, unguarded & uninhibited.
The shocking realization that this world lies in wait to prey upon the innocent.

Isn't that a shame! ☺

St. Vincent – Every Tear Disappears Lyrics 3 years ago
There is power and wisdom in putting on a SMILE after a painful setback.
Rather than medicating away the pain...
It's not fake even if you have to force it at first; It's part of the real cure.

"Time heals all wounds" (Not immediately; no, but gradually, over time)

Complain about the injustice, and it just gets worse.
If I can cry for pity, I can just as easily fight it in my own strength.

Does it still hurt? of course it does. but it fades, I'm okay;
I don't need to know how, but it does.

I wasn't sure if I could make it, but
Now that I have, I'm a whole new stronger, better, & wiser ME!

Where are these lyrics from? I like this version better; they tell the story better and I think our band will use these lyrics when we cover this song. (but I feel like we should know where they came from if we're going to use them)

Phish – Esther Lyrics 8 years ago
Cast of characters:

• Esther – A young girl (Our tragic heroine)
• Armenian Man – ‘Bad boy’ (Stranger to Esther’s family)
• The Bucket – His ‘vessel’ containing a ‘Gift’ for Esther
• The Puppet – His ‘gift’/The baby
• The Church/Congregation – Esther’s traditional family/community
• “The puppet held high” – Visibly pregnant & unashamed
• Storm – untenable situation (within the family)/the world apart from her loving family
• “Her feet began to lift” – Turns to drugs (She gets high)
• (Instrumental interlude) – Time spent escaping through drugs
• “Tumble earthward” – comes down to reality (now destitute)
• Evil Men – Evil People (truly wicked or maybe she’s paranoid. Either way, no one to turn to)
• Morning – Cleared Mind
• “Wandered through the streets” – debates which way to go (back home?)
• Chilly Lake – Hard feelings/Cold treatment/Judgment
• The Town – Home/Family
• Joggers – “The Healthy” (family, faculty, medical or social workers) who ‘know better’
• “To Swim” – To face (and try to accept) the cold judgment of others

With all the metaphors introduced, the tragic conclusion of this tale comes into painful focus in the last two stanzas as Esther decides to rid herself of the child at the will of her family, only to be faced with feelings of guilt small at first, nagging, relentless, and ultimately inescapable.
The stigma attached to her from those on the outside combined with inner thoughts about the child (she would never come to know) prove to be more than Esther can bear. Somewhere out there is a man who shamelessly ruined a girl. Pitiable Esther takes her own life.

@[Macanone:8265] I hate - that I think - you have a possibly valid interpretation because... I don't LIKE IT but that doesn't make it inaccurate. I like mine better but the worst of all would be if we were both right and you plugged your cast of characters into my script. (too scary) Let's not.

Nirvana – The Man Who Sold the World (David Bowie cover) Lyrics 8 years ago
Trying to move up in the world, someone heading in quite the opposite direction reminded me of the man I used to be; like I was seeing my ‘former self’ – the hedonistic way I used to be. Though I think of my ‘former self’ as an old friend – he would say the same of me (his future self) because… I have done everything that I can to put him behind me. So, it was surprising, how close I felt to my old self. Like, “Didn’t I put away my old personality a long time ago.”

My old personality, as it turns out, was not dead at all.
In fact, it has always been leading me around like a slave.
I must face the fact that I am my own worst enemy,
By pursuing pleasures, I've sold my chance for real for happiness.

Resigned, I shrugged off the thought, and went back to ‘business as usual’.
For years and years, I pursued happiness for myself in search of some foundation of real value to build my life around, where I could stand on my own two feet, yet I wandered. I turned to looking at others; maybe somebody – out of the millions of people here in the world – might have the answer? But no, they’re all as lost as I am! And apparently the future of all mankind was lost a long, long time ago.

If anyone has the answer, it is certainly not me.
The wicked one has never lost control.
Look into the face of anybody who simply goes with the flow of the world…
And you are looking at an unwitting supporter of the Evil One who sold into slavery, the world of mankind.

As I passed along, trying to move up in the world, someone heading in quite the opposite direction reminded me of the man I used to be; so deeply, in fact, that it was like I was seeing my ‘former self’. As he passed, I continued to think about my previous self-seeking ways – the way I used to be. Though I think of my ‘former self’ as an old friend – I would not expect that he would say the same of me (his future self) because… I have done everything that I can to put him behind me, put away those evil ways. So, it was surprising, the closeness I felt to my old personality. I said to ‘myself’, “Didn’t I put away the old personality along with its practices, a long time ago.”

My old personality, though, as it turns out, was not deadened, as I had thought.
In fact, it has always been leading me about as a slave.
I must face the fact that I am my own worst enemy,
the one who forfeited my own future.
