Rattlesnake Lyrics
Follow the powerlines back from the road
No one around so I take off my clothes
Am I the only one in the only world?
I see the snake holes dotted in the sand
As if Seurat painted the Rio Grande
Am I the only one in the only world?
Sweating, sweating, no wind whipping behind me
Sweating, sweating, no one will ever find me
The only sound out here is my own breath
And my feet stuttering to make a path
Am I the only one in the only world?
Is that the wind finally picking up?
Is that a rattle sounding from the brush?
I'm not the only one in the only world
Running running running, rattle behind me
Running running running no one will find me
Running running running, rattle behind me
Running running no one will ever find me
Sweating sweating sweating rattle behind me
Running running no one will ever find me
Sweating sweating sweating rattle behind me
Running running no one will ever find me
No one around so I take off my clothes
Am I the only one in the only world?
As if Seurat painted the Rio Grande
Am I the only one in the only world?
Sweating, sweating, no one will ever find me
And my feet stuttering to make a path
Am I the only one in the only world?
Is that a rattle sounding from the brush?
I'm not the only one in the only world
Running running running, rattle behind me
Running running running no one will find me
Running running running, rattle behind me
Running running no one will ever find me
Sweating sweating sweating rattle behind me
Running running no one will ever find me
Sweating sweating sweating rattle behind me
Running running no one will ever find me

Anne said in an interview that these lyrics are based on her own true story.
Her friend owned a lot of land out in the middle of nowhere and Anne was visiting. Anne took a walk out into the wild and decided to talk her clothes off, to 'enhance' the experience she was having. To make it more dangerous.
She suddenly heard bushes rustling followed by the rattle of a snake. She was so freaked out she ran back to her friends house naked, completely leaving her clothes behind.
I believe the story for two reasons. One, it is way to crazy to just come up with and two, She hardly EVER tells the back story or meanings to her songs.
Thought I would share that.
My first impression, as a song writer myself, is that this sounds like a literal real day-in-the-life experience.
Yet, one could still find it to be a metaphor for coming of age free & unafraid, unguarded & uninhibited.
The shocking realization that this world lies in wait to prey upon the innocent.
Isn't that a shame! ☺
Running, damaged woman with poisonous fangs, retreating from the pain of the world and of other people.
