I don't know if it refers to the below but its possible. In the the UK, we have a carnival queen sometimes in carnivals. Well Iceland is too icy for carnivals. So instead, young girls and boys are chosen on a voluntarily basis and they are judged by judges. The winning girl has a bird literally sewn into her knickers. GREAT CARE is taken, not to pierce the bird with the needle or injure it. It is sewn round its feathers. The birds dont mind because it means they dont have to bother making a nest that year. The girl then has to feed and care for the bird until it lays eggs. At which point the bird is released and the girls family are rewarded with seaweed. The girl must then hatch the eggs into baby birds and rear them until they fly away. Sometimes the adult bird returns with food for the babies. If it doesn't, then the girl must do it. Hence the lines about catching worms and horseflies. If the girl successfully rears all but one of the baby birds, then she effectively becomes the queen of Iceland for a year. If the girl harms the original bird or releases it before it lays eggs or it dies, then the girl must be outcast. Never to return to her village. Any girl that returns after being outcast is stoned to death. For the boys, their task is more dangerous. They must choose between wearing a beard of bees. Or keeping a lobster in their underwear. Most boys choose the bees. This may well be the beard she refers to in the song. It is also where the phrase, the birds and the bees originated. |

Could i mention that this song gets better every time i hear it. When it stops getting better each time, just turn it up louder and its better again. Even the neighbours agree, they're thumping on the wall to show their appreciation. Hey its no problem, i thump back to let them know they are welcome and crank it up a bit for them. Sadly, i am kind of, in a situation like this. It's nice to feel alive again at the top of the loop and oh the view but its about to plummet down that hill into.... I dunno. I don't think i get a happy ever after though. I know she can do much better than me and its only a matter of time till she realises and is it better to back away now and hurt her a little tiny bit, than rush into something that's amazing but ultimately, going to leave me broken. No disrespect to any of you but im not a teenager. I am closer to Mark & Toms age than i am to some of you and i would have thought i would have all this "covered" by now but its just as bewildering now as it was when i was a teenager. Just, to my relief, its just me judging me now, as opposed to half the school. Sorry ive gone on but yeah this is a tremendous song. Melancholic euphoria. I've just had the best idea.... Could be about many things really but my thought was that it might be about a family member, girlfriend, friend or even professional counsellour asking about his dis-association with society or depression. In that people who don't get it say things like "Cheer up" and "Dont worry, be happy". While they mean well, such suggestions are incredibly condescending and un helpful. Like the depression sufferer is going to suddenly shake their hand and say "Do you know, I really hadn't thought of that, thank you". The "less than useful" could be the narrators way of expressing low self esteem, a lack of self worth. If people tell you that you are useless over and over again, you eventually stop shrugging off their ignorance and begin to believe it and it becomes a reality. For example if you are told it at work, then you get home, hoping for respite but you are told the same thing by your family. So you escape to your room to watch TV and you see the media portrayal of the ideal society and you realise you don't fit in. The only respite is sleep. But you can't sleep because you are worried about work. So you have a drink to make sure you sleep. Then you wake up feeling groggy and looking rough and now you feel even less like going to work but you struggle in and the manager is on your case all day. Then you go home for more abuse. A never ending cycle of being told you are a failure. That's when the problems start, when you start to believe them. I can take it from someone else but even I think it's truthful" Then the lines "If you don't mind, I'll keep my thoughts to myself" because depression is a deeply personal thing and all too often people come along expressing a genuine desire to help. Yet once the sufferer gives them a glimpse into the darkness, they back off and the depression victim feels even more alienated and Isolated. Obviously it might be about something very different but since there are no other comments, I thought I'd throw it in. |
