I think both versions of the song work, because I think for once a line that may have even meant to be funny just fits.
Also, "wishing that I could take back all those words that meant nothing that I didn't say," could very likely mean he said words he didn't really mean and he is taking them back. As in, he told the girl he loved her, but he didn't really.
This song got me through like this really bad time i was having with this girl and this song made me stop and think and i realized i got to move on becausei'm not gonna change for anyone and i'm gonna stop being that fool

This song has always been my favorite song off of Dude ranch. I remember when I got that Cd for cheap, because they weren't really popular back then. Then someone stole it. And I had to pay high price for it later. But this song alone is worth the CD. The lyrics mean so much to me and can really help at times. A realtionship gone bad, and getting worse. Such an amazing song!
