Gin Blossoms – Hey Jealousy Lyrics 5 days ago
@[thenarrator:50751] There is something really magical about this song. It captures a moment in time. "Tomorrow we can ride around this town and let the cops chase us around"; "You know it might not be that bad; you were the best I ever had"; You can trust me not to-- and not to sleep around, If you don't expect too much of me.you might not be let down...". Can't remember all of the lyrics but I see this song as sort of a "devil may care" piece. Capturing a time period when he and his muse were wild and free. He moved on but wishes he never had and that she would just take him in for the night. He's saying, lower your expectations and just relive the moment with me. Genius song...

Lynyrd Skynyrd – Free Bird Lyrics 5 months ago
Dolly Parton just covered this song on her new R& R album. And I have to admit
I cried when I heard it. I can't tell you why. It just hit me at an emotional level. The words, the instrumentals and the fact that she was singing it.
My son was listening with me and had never heard of Free Bird.
I agree that technically the song meaning was probably written as a "I can't take you with me; you'll just be in the way" kind of song, but I could never relate to it in that way.
It is such a relatable song. Besides the fact, that it is also like a good bye song to those lost when their plane went down.

Carly Simon – You Belong To Me Lyrics 6 months ago
I think this song is about the pain that a woman is feeling
after discovering that her lover is having a relationship with someone else.
"I've known you from way back when".
She's trying to understand the unthinkable.
This guy she has loved and trusted.
Betrayal, Broken Trust and Pain
Carly nails the emotions with her voice (twists her voice around the feelings)

Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers – Even the Losers Lyrics 6 months ago
The song means that even the unfortunate, the unlucky, the down and out
can randomly get lucky. This to me is hopeful. It's a simple
song with a strait forward meaning,
Another brilliant "undersung" TPHB song.

@[TheBlueOysterCult:44337] This being the 5th Anniversary of Tom's passing I wanted to post something about one of his masterpiece's. It does sound like he had a fling but this song sets a sultry passionate tone--about an in the moment affair the is remembered years later. While I respect the you see this as a simple love him and leave hi song I think that the brilliance of Tom's songwriting talent shines through in this song

The last reply was actually mine. Somehow the wrong profile came up when I logged in.
The first time I heard this song I was overcome with emotion.
It speaks to so much of what is happening today with hate and
war. The artist wonders if someone ever thinks of him and thinks about Saturday's child (has to work for a living) While I can hear a bit of a romantic theme within the song, it is so much more. I believe that Neil was an activist for the dolphins but also an idealist, a questioner, It's nice to hear about other artists who cover the song, I find this one to be an outstanding piece of work

@[Goatllama:42900] It's beautiful instrumentally. I think that it can
be interpreted in so many ways. I found myself humming this

@[Mark1:38966] "He slaps her once in awhile and she lives and loves in pain". I think that this IS a song about DV. When the song was written there wasn't the awareness that there is today.
I think that the song is about abuse, disrespect and the plight of many women during that era.

What else can one say? Straight into darkness aka Damn the Torpedoes.
"The weak ones fall the strong carry on".....They go straight into darkness.

To me this is about depression, heartache and choosing to live and go on in spite of the pain.

Iris Dement – My Life Lyrics 2 years ago
This song was played on the "Hand Maiden" and the lyrics are very appropriate for that series. For me it also speaks to life's emotional hardships and. feeling like one is so small and will never be remembered for anything important. But the writer goes on to talk about small gestures are significant--loving a parent., comforting a friend, making a lover smile. The song is sad but meaningful to me.

@[Ronnietalktorussia:37518] Agree. Lately I have come to appreciate him as an artist. Written during "simpler" times (and a recession) t distinctly remember appreciating the message of this song. I was working as a waitress when this song came over the radiok and a coworker said "I hate this song because it encourages people to just settle, to not try to improve themselves". I never saw it that way. I thought there was something beautiful about this song--it was kind of a tribute to the simple life of working people enjoying the comfort of a close relationship. Right on Alice!

Paul Davis – I Go Crazy Lyrics 3 years ago
Brings me way back in time. Sitting in a pub with a friend, shooting the breeze and this song comes up. Tears well up in my eyes and she looks at me like "what just happened". Getting over a bad break up and this song hit a raw nerve and revealed to me that I was still in love with this guy. I remember the friend showing that she understood the pain. "I know" she said, understanding the universal pain of loss and grief.

Player – Baby Come Back Lyrics 3 years ago
Wow, I lived this song. Heard it over and over again. After my first real break up I used to listen to and cry to this song. A real seventies classic. I felt the desperation of the writer in just wanting to get rid of the hole in his heart. "There was something in everything about you". The writer in retrospect is realizing how important this relationship was. "You can blame is all on me": I don't necessarily know that the break up was his fault, but he so loves and misses this woman so much that he is willing to take the blame just to reconcile with her.

Like someone else said, this song was personal for me. When I was dealing with infertility I heard this song on the day I had a miscarriage. It was a very strange and mournful day. Chris Isaak – Wicked Game Lyrics 5 years ago
The writer is caught up in a relationship with a woman who is able to seduce and manipulate him. He realizes that lust can affect his decisions in ways that leave him feeling vulnerable and he doesn't like that. This "wicked" woman has some sort of hold on him; the lust between them has some very real consequences for the writer, but he's very caught up in the games, his desires , lust, impulsitivy and the trouble avoiding the pitfalls of engaging in this type of relationship

@[force263:28733] Yes, Bowie was one of the first to openly display gender fluidity. And interestingly enough, I don't recall it being scandalous (as it could have been during the time in which his songs were first crafted) but rather embraced by his fans and fellow musicians. Yes, he was bold and courageous, part of his appeal and genius.

@[John336Bible:28726] Just saw the movie and the song is a major subject of the movie (Hence the title). I don't agree the Freddie sold his soul to the devil. Instead, I think that he purposely "pushed the envelope" in writing this operatic song. There are many references to his roots as a young Indian boy who came to the US. Though the timing is wrong for the song to be about AIDs, it is hauntingly appropriate. Great song and great movie

One of my favorite TPHB songs. I love the line "There's no one as honest as those in pain", because that is so true. Unless you have experienced true psychic pain/ heartbreak, I don't think that you get to entirely know yourself. So in this case I think that the song is about heartbreak over a relationship that never was and the incredible lyrics that evolved as a result

Being a fervent Tom Petty fan, I thought the simplicity of this song was poignant...as many of Petty's songs do, it captures a moment in time that sticks out in the writer's mind...though time has passed the feelings and essence of the brief and sensual encounter are gifted to the listener in this piece
