@ami22 hey there, thanks :) Well, it really has been a long time and I guess I'd interpret the whole song differently now anyways. However, I've had a hard time myself figuring out what the Forest Whitaker reference might mean. Forest Whitaker is an actor mainly known for his eyes which, due to his ptosis, give him a constantly unimpressed or even condescending look. So, given that the girl names the baby after this actor, either the baby is just like her and their relationship (unimpressed and annoying) or is yet another lightheaded decision she made and already regrets. Maybe it's not even really about a baby but rather symbolical for the product of her new relationship; it's bland and boring. Which would explain why he expects her to come running back to him; cause with his opposite (the biker) it's just boring, so she'd rather have the carnage that is their relationship. And given that it's in the title, I guess it's judging their whole relationship, as in "Are we seriously doing this again? You're kidding me, right?" Hope that makes some sense. But again, I'm not entirely sure myself about the meaning of this sentence, so take it with a grain of salt :) |

Awesome song, tricky lyrics though. It's kinda clear what is going on in them sentimentally but it could be put in so many different contexts... Given the revenge theme (don't fuck with me, I'm back and I want what is mine) as well as the line "the worst thing that happened was I was standing too close to your heart" shows that some kind of betrayal has taken place there. So there are two ways this could be seen: 1. The more superficial, but maybe also more obvious interpretation, is that of a girl that broke up with him. The sea would be his love for this girl. It started out as a safe thing, he could enjoy the sea with it's dangers since he was safe on the ship ("The ship was the love of my life"), . Then something happened, could be the girl cheating or just the break up or something completely different, and the two of them "went down together". Somehow the girl got out though, probably cause she was the one ending the relationship, while he, without the "ship", got lost in the sea i.e. the pain and regret that comes with a break up. While for a long time he was depressed, now he's moved on to another stage of grief; he's angry at the girl, he feels like she ripped his personality off him and betrayed him when he trusted and loved her (the part about being too close to her heart). He's tired of feeling so bad and snapped out of his delirium, therefore he's "awake" now and sees all the shit she's put him through. (I'm tired and bout to wake up) 2. The other interpretation refers to a betrayal that couldd come for anyone he trusted, family, friends, a loved one. Again, they ripped him off his safety by betraying him. That shocked and hurt him so much that, instead of reacting, he backed away to grief about this whole situation. Now he's recovered and is back to finally revenge what's been done to him, and he warns whoever abused his trust not to fuck with him anymore and and just give up already. Ok, that's all I've got to say. Hope it makes some kind of sense :) |

| Tegan and Sara – Monday Monday Monday Lyrics | 9 years ago |
|
This is just my take on this, however I've been interpreting Tegan and Sara songs all afternoon (Yes, I'm totally in control of my life, thanks for asking.) and I think I'm starting to see a pattern there. In quite a few of their songs (the con, back in your head), the protagonist seems to freak out because of their relationship and starts acting pretty irrational and destructive. Maybe I'm relating this too much on my own relationship, but it feels like this pattern could also be applied here. The protagonist feels insecure in her relationship, maybe not validated enough or like her SO doesn't really care about her (anymore?), i.e. the other person goes to places without her, and she's left feeling sad and wondering why her SO doesn't want her around ("You'll go without me, whats wrong with you?"). Not wanting to get hurt or show that she's the one who loves the other one more, reaction to that is acting like she doesn't care either, pushing her SO away by telling them that she's not interested in their problems, background and overall personality (don't care about your city anymore etc.). It get's obvious she does care, though, when she doesn't want to be left alone, or goes as far as writing herself notes regarding this relationship. She further sabotages the relationship by testing her SO: she acts cranky to see if they'l leave without her or if they stick around, and when they leave she feels confirmed in her theory that she's unwanted by them, even though it was a pretty logical reaction coming from their SO. I'm not so sure about the mood swings though; could be her SO complaining, or herself every now and then realizing how irrational she's acting. I think the Mondays are just a metaphor for all the times her SO leaves without her, like you'd normally do when going to work or school. I might also be completely wrong since this interpretation fits my current situation so well... Whatevs, hope it made a bit of sense at least. |

| Thanks! And yeah, I get why you saw something religious in it, a big part of the CD revolves around spirituality, and most songs contain a lot of metaphors and can therefore be interpreted in different ways. And I'm happy I could help :) | |
| Foster the People – Fire Escape Lyrics | 11 years ago |
|
To me, this song represents the despise you develop for a city in which you've lived for too long and/or have had too many negative experiences in. The protagonist of the song is obviously an introvert who spends his time observing things and has therefore come to a conclusion others fail to see. His sensibility to his surrounding has led him to a deep hatred for the city he finds himself lost in. We learn that he prefers to listen to conversations instead of being an active component of them; he sticks to walls and makes himself invisible in hollywood, one of if not the most attention-grabbing place in the world. Even when he finds himself in Lexington and Vine he seems disinterested, at least for the superficial attractions tourists long to see. Instead, he becomes a passive part of Lexington neighborhood and develops an interest for the hopeless existence of pimps and prostitutes in a place that's supposed to make dreams come true. The lack of desired change of his city disappoints him to the point that he directly lashes out on L.A. for being a city which was already founded on dishonesty and couldn't find it's way out of it's covered misery. Admitting that some artists found success in this city,he also remarks the beings who found nothing but decay and whose tragic story stays in the shadow of the few succeeded Though he hates his city so much, he stays there as a "fire escape", to warn ingenious newcomer that they should escape, and to save lost souls. Finally, even though he hates L.A, he stays there to not give up on the people who still believe in it's false idyll Besides, Mark Foster tried to create a band in L.A and played in various Bars and Pubs to attract some attention, but no one recognized his talent. Spending his life alone in such a big and superficially glamourous city without getting anywhere, he found an escape in drugs. So I guess his antipathy for L.A sterns from this... |

I'm pretty sure this song is about Marks drug addiction "Well I was caught inside the wreck never found my way out I was filled with indifference The animals they were getting tired so I sang Them a song cause they promised not to take too long Well I can't find my way back home" He got into drugs and was too addicted to get out of this mess. All he longed for were drugs, everything else around him lost more and more importance until he became indifferent. to everything. I guess the tired animals are just a hallucination he had during a trip, and the line about him not finding his way back home is similar to some lines of "Live on the nickel" and refers to how he derailed from the life his parents tried to build up for him. It might also be important that Mark lived in LA during his "drug days", so far away from his hometown and family. So probably, him not finding the way back home refers to that, too. Plus, he couldn't go back home because if he would, his parents would've find out about his drug addiction. "I'll listen to you If you want me to but you have to share a smoke" His addiction deprived him of his humanity, so he stopped caring about others and only listens to them if they pay him with some kind of drug. His priorities have changed. "And I can't hear the angels calling the madness" Notice how the angels tell him about him going crazy: it's probable that he's high, hallucinating them and therefore thinks he's nuts because of the things he sees. "I feel the change in the rising tide and blood is in the room" Things get worse, the rising tide changes, and his living conditions are decadent (blood on walls). Or maybe, the walls are his body and protection mechanisms: but they betrayed him, since the tragedy happened on the inside while he walls pretended to keep him safe from the outside. This metaphor works great with drugs, since they give you the feeling of protecting you from your sorrows and depression, but meanwhile destroy you on the inside I buried all my wrongs there with my youth I'm On the outside and I'm falling apart woohh yeah He spent his youth stoned and unconsciously destroying himself. Now his youth is gone, and he's determined to set an end to all his mistakes (mostly to his addiction). Still, he has to burry his lost youth too. Well pleased to meet you excuse my hand I've been Bitten by an enemy that's pretended to be my friend Drug addicts often get shaky hands, mostly if they're withdrawing. The protagonist obviously wants to hide his addiction, and so accuses an "enemy who pretended to be his friend" for the condition of his hand. Somehow, though, the singer tells the truth, even though in an abstract way. Drugs pretended to be his friend by making him feel better, but he found they're actually his biggest enemies. No I never wanted to be like them I thought I was just to clever to be brought down to their level of miss fortune chagrin He never thought he'd end up like the drug addicts he knew. Assured that he was too strong to get addicted, he got himself into this mess. "I don't care now what it's worth but if you lift this burden off my back I'll follow you to the bloody end" He's on withdrawal, and he'd give anything to escape the enormous pain it causes. Since he doesn't "care what it's worth", we may assume that he'd go as far as taking drugs again to stop this pain. (I'll leave the next few lines since they're a repetition of what was already stated) And I'm on the outside of this This war I'm on the outside That's a lie He took drugs again, so he's on the "outside" of the world, of reality and of his problems. He's in denial, and says that his physical decadence has nothing to do with the drugs Dont give up on me now And I'm on the outside But it's warm on the outside That's a lie, I don't wanna fall apart He needs helps and someone who doesn't give up on him even though he gave them enough reasons to do so. The other lines could be interpreted in so many ways...but I'll go for this option: He confesses he's done drugs again. First he tries to excuse it by the fact that it feels so good (warm feeling typical for heroine), but finally admits that he did them again because he's afraid of life and withdrawal and fears that without them he won't survive. Yeah, well me, I've been afraid I clawed and I fought like hell Didn't know it was getting closer Darkest days upon you Yeah, well, me? I've gone astray, my blood was turning to sand Darkest days upon you Yeah, well me, I've been afraid that the numbness was getting closer The feverish days upon you The last lines are somewhat uplifting, since we find out he made it out of there anyways. He fought like hell to escape his addiction, and didn't realize he was getting better and better even though he was.But even though he made it, he's aware of the fact that someone else is soon gonna live through this darkness. So this is how I interpreted it. Feel free to have your own opinion about it's meaning. Have a nice day :) |

@clover114: Thanks :) @buttersstotch: Yeah, it can definitely be interpreted that way, too :) If it is that way, I may add that the fact the he uses fire to describe their relationship might not only stand for their passion, but is also a hint at how destructive it ended up being |

"the second half, right?" Implies that this messy relationship has been going on for a while. This sentence is also in a certain way ironic, therefore the singer himself sees how ridiculous the things they're doing really are. "We started a fire that was never supposed to burn out." They started a fight that is never going to end, since both of the people in the relationship don't wan't to give in, so it goes on and on and all it does is destroying more and more things. "You started a band that was cool for awhile but it turned pretty bland." That's about the attitude to start things that are great at the start, but soon become negative, and is therefore a metaphor for their relationship and maybe even for their childish fights. "I started a fight with the neighbor next door and his pesky wife. You started a job that you hate when you're sober and hate even more when you're not." This refers to them always doing stuff without thinking about the consequences. He started a fight with the neighbours to let his anger out, but didn't think about the fact that he was getting into a fight with people he'd rather not be in trouble with; he acted out on his emotions instead of thinking about the consequences of his behaviour and that's probably the reason why their fights keep going on. "I know you hate me too, always say you do." I don't think she really hates him and I don't think he believes it, either, but I think he does get hurt by her telling him so, even though it simply happens during their infantile fights. "And you moved to Japan, thought a clean bill of health and a camera could show you the plan. I bought a bird that repeats what I say,but I'm lonely is all that he's heard." The part about Japan is again about how light headed they do the stuff they do. The second part is pretty self explanatory; the singer doesn't feel satisfied at all with their relationship, he actually feels lonely. "You found a guy that is clearly the opposite me with a black motor bike" Since he always behaved in a way that messed up their relationship and therefore hurt her, she tries to make him jealous with another guy. "I dicked around, but its just like a movie that's picture is off with the sound." Instead of trying to behave better to earn her forgiveness, he starts "dickin' around" and only always realises what's the right thing to do when it's too late "And you started to write; It was subtle at first, but the danger was clearly in sight. I don't reply due to a lack of an ego and laziness cuts like a knife" The singer seems to overanalyses things, for example he panics as soon as she simply messages him. This behaviour leads to her feeling rejected and therefore nurtures their fights. "You say that you're good; had a baby with biker and named him Forest Whitaker. I'm laying low on the probable chance you convince me to give him a home" I think this simply serves to foreshadow more trouble that has yet to come, and therefore to imply that their future won't be any brighter; their relationship will never work out. I think that they both try to keep the relationship going, but it's simply not meant to be. It's kind of a sad song, since, no matter how hard they try, they never seem to succeed. At the same time, there's something uplifting in it, since they both have yet to come to the realisation that they won't ever work out and therefore still have hope. |

| Electrelane – After The Call Lyrics | 12 years ago |
|
I'm not sure, but I always hear "what did I do? What did I do?" Instead of "what could I do? what could I do?". I might be wrong, though. I think it's simply about someone who fucked up. It's not specified in which way, so everyone can feel free to interpret it how they want. However, it's obvious that the singer's aware of the fact that she messed up and can't forget what she's done, let alone forgive herself (all the things that I've done go around in my head). Obviously, whatever she's done has hurt her girlfriend (again, I interpret that she as her girlfriend, but it might as well be interpreted as a friend, family member etc.) deeply, to the point where her girlfriend tried to hurt her back verbally and maybe even broke up with her (all the things she said). Her girlfriend has lost faith and maybe even some love for the singer because of what she's done, and this seems to be most visible to the singer when she looks into her lovers eyes (in her eyes, it's all there in her eyes). Before she screwed up, her lover would look at her with love and happiness, while now her glance is shallow and despicable. (If you've ever really screwed up and looked into the eyes of the girl you love and who once loved you, you'll probably get what I'm trying to say. Seriously, it's a horrible thing and kind of makes you afraid of looking into her eyes again.) |

| Dan Croll – From Nowhere Lyrics | 12 years ago |
|
He's in love with a messed up girl. She hardly displays any emotions/ lacks of empathy (You're cold), doesn't really want a relationship with anyone (You said I should have never of stayed) and I guess she also has some mental illness like depression, since he can see her ghost (the ghost is her death self, i.e. some parts of her feel dead.) in her eyes, her eyes therefore look dead/hopeless/tired. Also, and that's the main point of the whole song, she messes up the singers' life. Every time he stares into her eyes, therefore every time he sees inside her who she really is, he loses control over his life. I also think that he stares into her eyes to let her know he's interested in her, and she's scared of relationships and therefore every time he tries to get closer to her he actually scares her and therefore is left lost and disappointed. Even though she seems to lack of emotions, I think that she is in love with him but sees how she messes up his life and is therefore aware of the fact that he's better of without her. 'It's not hard to be left behind. So I'll run' Instead of quitting 'looking into her eyes' to stop being left behind, the singer wants to run ahead so that once he'll be left behind he will be exactly where he needs to be. The singer has pretty strong feelings for this girl and is willing to organise his life in a way that allows him to lose control over it regularly without messing it up too much, just to be allowed to spend time with her. She on the other hand 'hides' from him, because she sees that it's better for him to be without her. The song ends with him holding on to his belief that she's the best thing that could possibly happen to him, while she still insists that he'd be way better off if he'd stop sticking to her (You said I should have never of stayed. But there's no better place for me) |

| Man Man – Head On Lyrics | 12 years ago |
|
I might be wrong, but I feel like this song is about a clinically depressed person. "You don't even recognize the stranger It's you from before": His illness has made him a completely different person, now he's sad and hopeless all the time, while back then he was 'normal'. "There's a hole in your head At least that's what everybody's guessing It's why you're always misread It's why you sleep but you never feel rested" People misread him, they don't know he's depressed and therefore don't understand why he does the things he does and so think "he has a hole in his head", therefore that he's dumb or a bit crazy. The part about sleeping without feeling restless is a typical symptom of depression; you always feel restless and tired, even if you sleep enough. "Hold on to your heart Hold it high above flood waters Hold on to your heart Never let nobody drag it under Hold on to your heart Even when your body's bitter Hold on to your heart Never let nobody take it over Ever take it over Ever take it over from you" A lot of people think that depressed people hate others and the whole world, and maybe that's true for a few or maybe even for most depressed people, but not for all of them. Some (including me) really see beauty in people and in the world, but don't believe that they're able to be happy themselves (and therefore stay hopeless). However, I think this song is about this kind of depressed person, and the singer is basically telling him that, even if he's suffering that much and people hurt and try to bring him down, to not ever give up on his good heart, to never give up on love and humanity and to hold on to himself. "Of the life you have lead that is always a mess" Depressed people mostly kind of give themselves and their life up, they stop doing the things they enjoyed and don't do the stuff they should do: their life becomes a mess. "Are you dreaming of death Are there ghosts in your chest" He's dreaming of death, therefore he's suicidal (again a symptom of depression). The ghosts in his chest could either mean that his heart hurts (therefore emotional pain), or that he has an unexplainable pain in his chest, another symptom of depression. Depression often causes 'unexplainable' physical pains like headache or, like here, of a pain in the chest. Then the line of holding on to his heart comes again, telling him to not let the though times turn him a cynic, mean, selfish person. Of course everyone's free to interpret it however he/she wants, but that's what the lyrics mean to me :) |

| The Drums – Down by the Water Lyrics | 12 years ago |
|
I think drumsss is right. Of course everyone's still free to interpret it another way, but here's what I think: If you fall asleep down by the water baby I'll carry you all the way home. Pretty self explanatory, he tells his lover that he'll be there for him no matter what happens. everybody's gotta love some one but i just wanna love you dear everybody's gotta feel something but i just want to be with you, my dear He knows he's gotta love girls, but he's only able to love and have feelings his (male) lover. i know it's hard i know it's hard i know it's hard to be in this position if they stop loving you i won't stop loving you if they stop needing you i'll still need you, my dear This refers to his lover coming out to his family. The singer know it's hard since he himself is gay and had/has to go through it. He tells his lover that it doesn't matter if his lovers fiends and family reject him (stop loving/needing him) because he'll still love and need him no matter what. By saying this he also makes clear that he really loves him and therefore it's worth fighting for their love you've gotta believe me when i say when i say the word forever and whatever comes your way oh we'll still be together The singer believes their love will exist forever. He also tells his lover that, no matter what/who'll try to separate them (for example their homophobic family/friends), they'll stick together cause their love is stronger than their hate. i know it's hard i know it's hard but i understand you, just take my hand He tells his lover again that he knows it's hard to be gay and have to handle with the rejection that comes with it, but he'll be there for him and make up the sadness others cause :) |

| The Kooks – Got No Love Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| I actually don't think it's about a single person. I rather believe that it's about (or for) a lonely, bullied person. I think the verse "Don't let the bring you down" means he/she shouldn't let the bullies bring him/her down. To me this makes more sense, because no one tries to bring down a single person. Furthermore, a single person mostly still gets love from friends. | |

| I guess it's about a "lost" person, maybe he's even depressed. He can't sleep at night because of his sorrows and he knows that there are a lot of people who feel like him and can't sleep because of their sorrows. He and those people are "the greatest pretenders", because they act like everything's okay, but then suffer so much that they can't even sleep. To the morning they're cast out, but in fact they're the strongest people because they manage to suffer without letting anyone know, they carry their burden alone. The question "How am I gonna get myself back home?" is the question he asks himself all night long. In fact, he's worried about when and if he will ever feel safe, accepted and loved again. | |

| The Kooks – Runaway Lyrics | 12 years ago |
|
I think this song is about a guy who's in love with a girl who doesn't want a real relationship. She prefers having various lovers. The guy knows that she doesn't want a relationship and therefore is going to break his heart, and he knows that the right thing to do would be to run away and forget her before he falls even more in love with her, but he's already too much in love with her and is therefore not able to just forget her. Even though she hurts him emotionally, he tries to be good to her because he's in love with her and maybe even hopes that she'll fall in love with him. The song shows how he falls more and more in love with her and how he's bound to her. At the beginning, he wants to run away alone and forget her. At the end he kind of wants the opposite: He wants to run away with her, therefore he wants and kind of believes in a relationship with her and he wants her to leave all her other lovers behind. |

| Tom Odell – Another Love Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| I think it's about someone who was hurt many times by the persons he loved. As a reaction he's afraid of loving someone again, and uses excuses (like that he wants to take her somewhere but can't because it's too cold) to hide the fact that's simply fear who stops him from loving again. Also, his heart was broken so many time that he feels emotionally simply too weak to love and fight for someone again. | |
| Bon Iver – Skinny Love Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
I think this song's about an ending relationship. She wants to leave him, and he tries to convince her in different ways to stay in the relationship, even though he knows that it's a destroyed relationship. At some point's of the song, he unintentionally faces the truth that he can't stop their relationship from ending. When this happens, he gets angry and desperate. Come on skinny love just last the year Pour a little salt, we were never here He obviously tries to let her stay in the relationship, at least for a few months, believing (or just hoping) that in a few months everything will be okay and that she won't feel the need to leave then. She should pour salt so no other relationship can 'grow', 'cause he doesn't want her to love another man but him. Staring at the sink of blood and crushed veneer I think this represents their destroyed relationship. He stares at it, therefore he sees the issues in their relationship. He doesn't just see it, he stares at it, what probably means he thinks about it and tries to find out what went wrong. I tell my love to wreck it all Cut out all the ropes and let me fall It would break him if she'd end the relationship. He tries to let her know how lost he would be without her and tries desperately to convince her to go on with the relationship by letting her feel bad for the pain she'd cause if she ended it. I told you to be patient I told you to be fine And I told you to be balanced And I told you to be kind He feels for a moment like he can't stop her from ending the relationship, and in desperate anger he makes her responsible for all the things that went wrong in their relationship. He tells her that it isn't fair that she just leaves even though she's the one who caused this mess. And in the morning I'll be with you But it will be a different kind Nothing will be the same if she leaves him. He tries to keep her by telling her that a breakup wouldn't just mean the end of all the bad things in their relationship, but also the end of the good ones. I'll be holding all the tickets And you'll be owning all the fines I'm not sure about the meaning of this, but I think it's meant like this: She owns fines, that means that people have to pay to her for their mistakes. He holds all the tickets to make sure that he doesn't have to pay anything to her. The fact that he holds all the tickets, even though he only needs one so he doesn't have to pay fines, shows how afraid he is of owing her something. Therefore I think it's about the fact that, if she leaves him, he won't trust her ever again because she would hurt him so immensely by leaving him, therefore she won't get another chance if she ends their relationship now. Come on skinny love what happened here We suckled on the hope in lite brassieres He tells her that she won't find something better then their relationship, what she believes to find after the end of the relationship is just an unrealistic hope. Sullen loads is full, so slow on the split There's a lot going wrong in their relationship, which burdens them both a lot, and he thinks that she's overreacting (by ending the relationship). She should just wait a little time until things get better again and then they'll see (Again he hopes that letting her stay for a few more months in their relationship's gonna change her mind) I told you to be patient I told you to be fine And I told you to be balanced And I told you to be kind Again he starts losing hope. In anger, he makes her (again) responsible for all their faults. And now your love is wasted And who the hell was I? He accuses her of leaving without caring about him, therefore to act selfish. He again tries to make her feel guilty for his pain. Also, he acts like a breakup would mean that she has never loved him I'm breaking at the britches And at the end of all your lines 'Her lines' are the border between both of them which she puts by leaving him, and they're at the same time the emotional distance that'll exist once their relationship ended. He will break down at those lines, because he can't handle this distance that will exist between them. Who will love you? Who will fight? Who will fall far behind? He want's her to reflect about this questions so she'll realise that he's the only one who truly loves her and the only one who will fight for her. In addition he asks her if she really want's to hurt the person who loves and protects her. (Again trying to make her feel guilty) |
