I guess it's about a "lost" person, maybe he's even depressed. He can't sleep at night because of his sorrows and he knows that there are a lot of people who feel like him and can't sleep because of their sorrows. He and those people are "the greatest pretenders", because they act like everything's okay, but then suffer so much that they can't even sleep. To the morning they're cast out, but in fact they're the strongest people because they manage to suffer without letting anyone know, they carry their burden alone. The question "How am I gonna get myself back home?" is the question he asks himself all night long. In fact, he's worried about when and if he will ever feel safe, accepted and loved again.

I think this song is about finding your way home when you are lost, literally, but also metaphorically. The speaker asks himself how he can get back home again ( How am I gonna get myself back home?) . Home can either be your literal home where you feel safe and welcome, but it could also be who you are. In the next line, he says that he's been up all night and in the morning, he is trying to pretend he was home. In the literal sense, he has been away from home. In the metaphorical sense, he has been out all night, too, not home. He is telling himself this is just another night, like it is meaningless and unimportant. He will be cast out but still end up there again. I think "there" means somewhere or different places. When he is out at night somewhere in a bedroom that is not his own, it is dark there and there are his thoughts everywhere. When he is coming home eventually, even rhe birds mock and curse him. When he is away all night and pretending to be someone else, he can't find his home and his own self. I hope this makes any sense...
