Cave-In – Crossbearer Lyrics 1 year ago
Sounds like the usual anti-religious BS, but there seems to a recurring implied "but" that suggests there might be something more to it than that. It's in the "and yet", and the "or"s, which suggests contrasting ideas even though on the surface he appears to be consistent. Maybe saying "or kill me in the name of God" implies that he deserves to die if he is wrong in mocking the cross? Another interesting theme is connecting "Never am I guided by its wisdom, Gentleness or kindness" with "I only understand its hate" - by itself the first verse just seems sarcastic while the second one is just together, but when taken together he's implying there is in fact a compassionate side to Christianity, he's just never felt it. The use of "crossbearer" as the target of derision is interesting. It could just be an ignorant kid talking who doesn't understand what "crossbearer" implies, confusing it with someone wearing the cross as an icon, but if used correctly it's referring to someone inflicting suffering on themselves, not others. This makes sense if we consider that the line "Crossbearer, the lesser me of a figment" implies that the narrator IS the crossbearer who they deride - or at least, a version of them is the crossbearer. If so, it suggests the song is actually an internal conflict between the current form of the narrator who no longer beliefs and his old self who once did, viewing his old self as causing him to suffer for no reason. Alternatively, the narrator could just be saying they are superior to the crossbearer, in which case they can be dismissed as an arrogant twit.

Muslims also believe the second coming of Jesus, where he is going to lead the armies of the righteous along with the Mahdi. Mohammad has nothing to do with it, he's considered to be a lesser prophet on the cosmic scale, he's just more important in practice due to being the seal of the prophets who gave the complete gospel.

Helmet – Birth Defect Lyrics 4 years ago
The main to note with this song is that "you" is consistent - they are someone who hates people who do good things. Now, it doesn't appear this "you" hates people *because* they do good things, but it's rather a statement that this person's opinion is completely irrelevant. Rather, the difference in opinion between them and the narrator is completely arbitrary - it's the titular birth defect. They have different perspectives because they were born in different circumstances, so that's no reason to hate, but their baseless hatred is a reason not to respect them. The last thing is the first seems to imply that "you" is practicing genocide against the people they hate - probably based on that "birth defect". It doesn't sound like it's literal genocide though, it sounds more like this person is just manipulative and cuts people down, but it's hard to tell exactly what is being referred to. In short, the song is saying that just because you don't like someone doesn't mean they are a bad person, and if you believe you're a contempt worthy person who should be stopped.

Death – To Forgive Is To Suffer Lyrics 4 years ago
This song is rather confusing, but it appears to be painting out a particular narrative, not just making a blanket claim that forgiving people is choosing to suffer. In this narrative, someone is repeatedly betrayed, but keeps forgiving this betrayer, leading to them to be hurt again and again. Their interactions also appear to be verbal in nature, it sounds like the two people made a promise, one keeps it, while the other breaks. The narrator is encouraging them to stop forgiving them so they can break out of this cycle of abuse, maybe saying they don't need to keep their end of the promise if the other person doesn't keep theirs.

Oathbreaker – Second Son Of R. Lyrics 5 years ago
It's clearly about someone who grew up in a broken home. I'm not sure who "R." is, either it's one of herparents (10:56 appears to be an anecdote about her brother), or it's Rheia. The second son of Rheia is Poseidon, but I have no idea how the would connect with this song. Unfortunately, I don't have more information about her family to confirm if R is one of her parents.

System of a Down – Forest Lyrics 5 years ago
I have no idea what the song actually means (given Serj's comments it appears that it might not exactly be about anything), but it appears Jesus plays appart. This is because "No circumcisions on the chair" appears to be an allusion to the fact that Christians don't require circumcision while Jews do, and that was a major contention in the Bible. With this in mind, "And make the forest turn to wine" appears to be referring to the miracle of turning water to wine, "You take the legend for a fall" appears to refer to the prophecy of the Messiah coming, "And make the forest turn to sand," appears to be referring to the desertification of the Levant, and the entire chorus appears to refer to God telling Jesus that he is both his son and they are the same. Aside from the Christian allusions though I have no idea what the song is supposed to mean.

The part that makes this line great is it's not that nobody CAN save them, it's that nobody is gonna save them. God is going to let them die because he isn't actually on their side, which is what many of the previous lines refer to.

"We're going down

The significance of going down in a spiral is it shows the level of control involved. They brought themselves down slowly but surely.

It's about mental illness, pretty blatantly with the line "legally disturbed", but there are other lines which make the meaning clear like "As long as I'm kept from laying hands on a weapon
Well then I think I'm o.k." is a reference to keep suicidal people away from items they could use to self-aware, a common practice for mentally ill people. The central theme seems to be about how this person has been socially isolated due to their mental illness, and them attempting to reintegrate themselves society with increasing confidence.

You ignored the fact that you could have gotten the schizophrenia and autism sections mixed up. Also, this song may very well be supposed to be about autism, but as I said numerous times before, if it is the writer knows nothing about autism.

None of your rant about Jung or the National Autism website make any sense, especially with your utterly arbitrary declaration that you achieved "80% accuracy". I'm seriously concerned for your mental health, you are not acting like a sane person.

That fact you think you've learned so much by researching is just a sign you came into this topic completely ignorant and just accepted whatever fit your preconceived notions, you still know next to nothing. I've actually studied this stuff at university, not just on random sites on the internet, but even with internet research I've been studying this for around 7 YEARS, not just two days like you. The only reason I didn't pull up sources to counter all your claims is because it's simply a waste of my time, especially when the sources you cite already do little to support your argument and I already gave examples of such.

PS: Did you seriously just create duplicate accounts to thumb yourself up? You're pathetic beyond words.

It's not that I have anything about Jung, it's just that he kinda died a couple decades before autism and schizophrenia were formally recognized as separate conditions, so he has no relevance to this conversation. If you had any understanding of modern psychology beyond copy/pasting quotes (that don't actually support your claims) from random websites you would realize how irrelevant analytical psychology is to this discussion.

Please shut up. You are incredibly annoying and have no idea what you are talking about. You just look for quotes that you though supported your argument, but they really, REALLY don't. For example, stereotypies are pretty much the OPPOSITE of catatonia, and I'm not going to waste my time going through everything wrong that you said. I'm just going to leave it by saying that it's possible that this one is supposed to be about schizophrenia and the other one is about autism and then the description for the whole song would fit, and if this song is about autism then it's written by someone who knows very little about autism.

PS: And who the hell references Jung when talking about psychopathology?

Dream Theater – Solitary Shell Lyrics 6 years ago
@[KingTrips:24279]

I’ve actually studied these disorders at university, copying Wikipedia references doesn’t do anything to help if you have no idea what it’s referring to. I’m going go through this line to make my case.

“He seemed no different from the rest
Just a healthy normal boy”

In all cases autism has a MUCH earlier onset than schizophrenia. Asperger syndrome (which isn’t a real thing, it’s just autism) still has early signs as it is a developmental disorder, it just has no verbal delay. Children predisposed to schizophrenia tend to have minor cognitive or motor impairments, but no direct symptoms of schizophrenia.

“But never cared much to be held”
This is pretty much the only line in the song that fits autism better than schizophrenia, but one line doesn’t make the case.

“And steadily he would decline
Into his solitary shell”
NOT a symptom of autism. Autism is NOT degeneritive, while schizophrenia is. Also, social impairment is as much of a trait of schizophrenia as it is if autism (something I did not know until I started volunteering at a mental hospital), and withdrawal is more associated with schizophrenia than it is with autism (autism tends to be more a lack of social ability than desire, while schizophrenia affects both areas, it’s a negative symptom of psychosis).

“As a boy he was considered somewhat odd
Kept to himself most of the time”
Probably more aspergers than schizophrenia by itself, but it could go either way.

“He would daydream in and out of his own world”
Could definitely be a symptom of prodromol schizophrenia.

“But in every other way he was fine”

Combined with the previous lines, THIS is what makes this verse appear to support schizophrenia more than autism. With autism there would be much more symptoms at this stage under both the class A and class B criteria, not just being odd and withdrawn.

Now to the chorus. Oh boy. The chorus is pretty much pure schizophrenia, and trying to make it be about autism is actually kinda offensive. It constantly reiterates the themes of delusions, which is psychosis. The notion that autistic people are trapped inside themselves is utter nonsense than really irritates the autistic community, but it actually does fit schizophrenia to some degree because the positive symptoms of psychosis can cause people with schizophrenia to kinda live in their own world and isolate them as much as the negative symptoms. Catalonia is much more associated with schizophrenia than it is with autism, and it’s never associated with aspergers.

“He poured himself onto the page
Writing for hours at a time” I’ve seen people trying to relate this to the “obsessive” aspect of autism, but that doesn’t make much sense with the previous two lines:
“He struggled to get through his day
He was helplessly behind”
As it makes it seem like he’s writing because he must, not out of passion. Unless of course they were trying to argue he’s behind because he writes so much, in which case the order of the phrasing is odd. Anyway, many schizophrenic people write a ton in long bursts, it just tends to be incoherent.

“As a man he was a danger to himself
Fearful and sad most of the time”
Anxiety and depression are comorbid to almost everything.

“He was drifting in and out of sanity
But in every other way he was fine”

This here makes no sense whatsoever with aspergers, but works perfectly with schizophrenia. It doesn’t onset until adulthood, and often psychotic breaks are episodic.

“The Test that Stumped Them All is clearly Schizophrenia...
"The boy is just simply crazy
We honestly think that maybe
Suffering from delusions..."”

Yeah, no. First, notice the voice. They THINK he suffers from delusions, that doesn’t mean he is actually delusional. Next, notice it’s a boy. Schizophrenia in children is EXTREMELY rare. Autism used to be classified as childhood schizophrenia for that reason and because the symptoms of autism and schizophrenia actually have a huge amount of overlap, the underlying cause is just very different.

“Given the entire out line of Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence one would have to conclude the writers of the song were referring to Aspergers... ” ...why? Why not schizoid personality disorder? Why not autistic disorder?

“None of them have any the disorders to my knowledge just created a concept song..” And if they haven’t made some effort to do real research instead of just assembling stereotypes, maybe they shouldn’t attempt to as you shouldn’t write about things when you have no idea what you are taking about. I doubt anyone in Dream Theater actually is an expert on this subject matter, and I hope they were self aware of that. I don’t think any of the songs are actually supposed to be about a specific disorder and are kept purposely vague so they don’t get tied down by their lack of understanding. The song is meant to be more about the idea of mental illness and it’s range of manifestations than it’s supposed to be about actual disorders.

“Dream Theater also made a concept album about past lives...”
This has NOTHING to do with the conversation.

If it's supposed to be about Aspergers, then the writer knows nothing about the condition whatsoever as it doesn't sound like Aspergers AT ALL. I heard the song is supposed to be a bout schizoid personality disorder, which makes more sense, but still doesn't explain the delusions, schizophrenia is the best fit. Also, Part 4 honestly sounds more like autism than schizophrenia, especially if you know the history of the disorder were it used to be classified as childhood schizophrenia.
