Chris Rice – And Your Praise Goes On Lyrics 11 years ago
This sons is about how God's praise is infinite and constant – even when the evening comes and our voices are silent. God's creation, the stars and moon and forests and mountains, all sing God's praises, too! And then when we leave the earth, the praise will continue in Heaven.

Needtobreathe – Learn To Love Lyrics 11 years ago
This song is about the battle we fight when we choose to commit to someone for a lifetime. It seems to be what someone might say to their lover, or the message between two lovers about their promise of devotion, even though the world will try to tear them apart. It acknowledges how difficult it is for marriages, friendships, or relationships in general to last in this kind of world and at this time when the fires of greed, selfishness, envy and anger are growing and are out to destroy people and the bonds between them.

Maybe we need to understand how painful it is to be brokenhearted before we understand how valuable this kind of love truly is. “I need the fear of a love that’s lost” implies that a fear of lost love might make someone work even harder at maintaining it.

“The fires we didn’t start” just refers to the nature of this world, this culture, of leaving a relationship when we’re not satisfied. What the chorus seems to mean is that no one is able to withstand the heat of these fires until they know what they’ll be missing if they get burned. Personally, the line “Just hold on to the way it is tonight,”makes me think that maybe this is the promise someone might make during, perhaps, their wedding. On the wedding day, the bride and groom are going to feel like the marriage will last forever and like they can be strong the whole way through. Inevitably, there will be days and seasons when they want to be through with it, but if they could just maintain the zeal they had for each other on their wedding day to keep going and stay strong, it can last. To “learn to love in the darkness and the light” simply means learning to love in the good times, and also in the bad.

“I had the fortune of a second chance...” I think everyone has a purpose in life and a path to follow. We sometimes stray, and sometimes we’re given second chances to get back on the road that leads to where we were always supposed to go, for example, to find this person. “The reason we all should dance”? I think it’s true joy, and it seems this song communicates that we can’t achieve true joy unless we persevere under the trials of life and the trials that will come when we decide to commit to someone forever.

Loving in good times is one of the easiest things to do; but loving when everything goes wrong is the greatest hardship we will ever face in this life. And that is why we need to train, prepare, and learn to love.

Needtobreathe – White Fences Lyrics 11 years ago
Really interesting how the song has such a happy, peppy feeling! At first listen, people sing along and dance and clap. Even at the concerts, people are smiling, singing along... not understanding the underlying pain.

The American Dream looks so happy from the outside. The big houses, fancy gadgets, nice clothes, and expensive cars all cover up the hurt that often comes from ignorant parents, too wrapped up in their pursuit of wealth to pay attention to their kids. Instead, they dress their kids up, sign them up for this activity and that activity, and give them toys so that instead of being able to tell the world that they're neglected, they're communicating that their parents "love" them.

Needtobreathe – Maybe They're On To Us Lyrics 11 years ago
The band said once in an interview that this is a song about their fear of their fans knowing too much about the band. Sounds like a legitimate fear when their lyrics are so deep. Perhaps fans are able to piece things together and learn more than what the band intended.

Needtobreathe – Second Chances Lyrics 11 years ago
This song is bittersweet and nostalgic. I think it's about a time when everything was going right, when there was hope about something great that was about to happen–but then you mess up. The past is beautiful and colorful, but leading into the present, it all fades. The green behind us was when things were growing, vibrant, and thriving. The bright and hopeful stars aren't there anymore. They faded.

Sounds like this song can be applied to many situations–maybe the hope of a good change in life–a new job, a relationship, even parents trying to have children or trying to adopt. Sometimes things look so hopeful, but then something happens or we mess up, and the future that once looked to bright from here... fades. All we want is the hope to come back. But maybe, the pain of waiting and of stolen dreams will make us stronger.

The lyrics and the tune seem to mourn the golden days, yet try to bring closure by acknowledging that "seldom second chances come along."

Needtobreathe – Oohs and Ahhs Lyrics 11 years ago
I think this song is about the first disciples of Jesus and the apostles. They had one of the hardest jobs in the world, spreading a radical story that they didn't come up with on their own, wishing Jesus was still there with them. After all, he was able to do it all by himself. They were persecuted to the point of bloodshed and death – "my tracks have left a stain."

"We were fresh coming off the vine, thrown into a barrel of the cheapest wine. Bottles in a store with a neon sign and we're all the ones to blame." The disciples and apostles were brand new to this whole "sharing the Gospel" thing, and the world accepted it as trash. But they know it's true, so it's worth it.

The disciples and apostles performed miracles and got lots of attention. But imagine the real anxiety they must have had trying to feed "mountains" of people. They were just men!

I'm a Christian, and I think we can often feel like this. Our God is awesome and great and can do incredible things, but it sure is easy to get discouraged when we're thinking about our own abilities instead of God's ability through us.

Mumford & Sons – Not with Haste Lyrics 11 years ago
"Do not let my fickle flesh go to waste//As it keeps my heart and soul in its place//And I will love with urgency but not with haste"

We're on earth with a God-given purpose–that's why we have these bodies, this flesh. Our physical makeup keeps us on the physical earth, which is where we are supposed to be at this time. What the first two lines of this last stanza is saying is "don't let my time here on earth go to waste" and acknowledges that in our humanness we tend to be selfish and flighty.

Finally, to love with urgency but not with haste is to invest our love wisely. After all, where we invest our love is where we invest our life.

Damien Rice – 9 Crimes Lyrics 11 years ago
This is a song about an affair, in which both of those involved are ashamed. The female is the other woman, while the man is the one who has a significant other. The female begins, saying “leave me out with the waste, this is not what I do.” She means she knows she is doing something dirty and wrong, so she belongs where garbage belongs - where it isn’t to be seen. In a more literal sense, she hopes that she is left out of all of his conversation, because she can’t let anyone know what she is doing. She feels shame, and admits that this is something that she knows is morally wrong, and it’s not something that is within her character to do. It’s the “wrong kind of place” because the place, the setting, is that he is with someone else. Therefore, she shouldn’t even think of him. She’s either telling him that it’s the wrong time for “somebody new” meaning her; or she’s telling herself it’s the wrong time for somebody new on her part. Perhaps she has a significant other of her own on whom she is cheating as well. The line “it’s a small crime and I got no excuse” is very self-explanatory as within the world and all of its large crimes, being a mistress is not a big deal. ...but it’s still a crime. There is no way to prove it innocent or acceptable. So many times she has asked herself “is that alright?” because she feels the apprehension and the doubts. Deep down, she knows it’s wrong, but at the surface, she says it’s alright, because she is still engaged in the affair and the affair is something she wants. It’s a melancholy, thoughtless, almost sarcastic “yeah,” as it is said quickly, yet not with the assurance an truly affirmative reply would normally have.

As for the gun, there’s confusion between the two involved in the affair. There is one gun, and someone has to shoot it because someone will be hurt in the end. The gun is loaded and ready to shoot and kill, since the affair is happening. The shot happens when the affair is exposed. But who exposes it? Whose gun is it? Can it be given away so that someone else can do the shooting? She’s not used to hurting people the way she is, so how is she going to hold the gun if the man doesn’t shoot it for her?

Mumford & Sons – I Will Wait Lyrics 11 years ago
I'll get to the point, I promise.

The Tower of Babel was built by a people who wanted to reach God. It was a meager attempt, and quite insulting to God, who ended up confusing their language. See, there used to be one language in the whole world, but God created many at this moment so that the tower could not be built. It also caused this nation to divide–just a consequence of their prideful yet meaningless pursuit of building a tower so high that it would reach the heavens. You can find this story in Genesis 11:1-9

Now here is why I think this album is called "Babel."

Religion is man’s pursuit to reach God through our trivial human actions and rituals. It's a waste of time because we're human–imperfect and small–and God is simply God. I think lead singer Marcus Mumford completely understands this, and has seen the hypocrisy of religion and the way it has torn the world apart, much like the Tower of Babel tore the early world apart ("'...and this is only the beginning of what they will do'" Genesis 11:6.)

Many of Mumford's lyrics allude to this theme of the hypocrisy and frivolity of religion, and the way it hurts people. I believe you can even hear this in the first verse of "I Will Wait.” Stones are hard, but they are also broken and smoothed over. Religion does the same thing to us. It hardens our hearts toward God, breaks us down, and corrodes our spirit and our character because we give into this lie that God is harsh and demanding, and only willing to know us if we offer religious sacrifices. God’s arms are actually open. He just wants our heart.

Seems to me that Marcus either was or is tired of the whole religion thing. It left him worn and bitter. The truth about salvation is that we cannot get it for ourselves. Here is the major point: we don’t reach God, God reaches us. We’re not powerful enough, which is why we needed a savior.

We wait on God to capture us in the right moment of our lives. We’ll die of exhaustion if we try to reach God with our actions.

“You forgave and I won’t forget”
Jesus forgave us which is why we have freedom and why we only need to believe.

“Shake the excess”
Shake the guilt. Jesus forgave everything, so we never need to be guilty.

“So take my flesh and fix my eyes”
Galatians 5:16
2 Corinthians 4:18

“That tethered mind free from the lies”
Lies that we’re not good enough.

“Keep my heart slow”
Not be hasty in giving into what the world has to offer.

I will wait for God to come through.
