The Mighty Mighty Bosstones – Seven Thirty Seven/Shoe Glue Lyrics 1 year ago
As mentioned here, 737 was their fan-mail PO BOX. "737 still lives and gives" was something they used to say a lot. The Bosstones were always good to their fans.

I think this song is about the Bosstones appreciation for their fans and friends.
--"Nice to know that someone hears us
It's good to know somebody's there"

and back to the fact that 737 was their fan mail po box...
--"Taking the time to show you care
Write again and thanks again from the bottom of my heart
See you soon and till then 737 is a real big part"

Again, its about the band's appreciation for their fans and the fact that they'd actually go and check the PO Box and respond.

"shoe glue, what can i do, a man is not well-dressed if his shoes are a mess."
--The bosstones always dressed up given the ska, punk, skate and hardcore influences on the band. They've said in interviews something like "if you're going to do a show, you should dress like you care." or something like that. So imagine, going across town to check the mail and your dress shoes get dirty from the Boston downtown streets.

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones – A Little Bit Ugly Lyrics 1 year ago
This song is loosely based on "Come a Little Bit Closer" by Jay and the Americans. If you listen to them, you hear the similarities. Dicky has mentioned in interviews that he and the other members of the band (but Dicky especially), are fans of old music (like Jay and the Americans). So they would, from time to time, throw in references to those songs, or even do melody sections that called back to those old songs. Another example is is 737 Shoe Glue references/calls back to "Rain Drops Keep Falling on my Head" by Burt Bacharach and BJ Thomas.

@[tellmecomputer:43759] Nate Albert got into A&R and production after his time with the Bosstones. Love the guitar work in this song. And to think, he was but a teen when this was written/produced.

@[Blackjack946:43758] no disrespect, but i'm not sure where you heard or got the idea that the bosstones were against drinking. They have many, many a song about drinking.

@[musicsuperhero1:43757] ALSO, when asked about their sound, they would often reply "we're just trying to be the best Bosstones we can be." ...in other words, "we're just us."

This is about ska-core...and/or the Bosstones themselves.

The term "ska-core" was coined in reference to the Bosstones style/sound. They didn't set out to create a genre or sub-genre. The fans and music business folk referred to the Bosstones sound as "ska-core" because they blended ska music with hardcore (punk, metal, thrash).

So it's about their sound...

You could also say it's about the band itself. They're known for touring and for their great live shows.

"its not the recipe it's gotta be the cooks"

and as Louis mentioned, no one was touring like the Bosstones, and I'd add that they were known for their live shows. Others can't compete. So "if you can't stand the heat in the kitchen, get out! It will increase!"

think the lyric is:

had no business being up there.

I stood like Gibraltar for 7 long years."

311 – Misdirected Hostility Lyrics 1 year ago
Several seem to think this is directed (no pun intended) at Kurt Cobain specifically. I think that is misdirected (pun intended).

I think it's much more general.

Nick and SA (Doug), have both said that, in general, 311 doesn't believe, like, or suffer all the whining and false pain that's found in a lot of music (esp. from the 90's on). There's a lot of musicians (we've all complained about it ourselves, I'm sure), that are rich and famous and successful, and still whine and complain and act like their life is miserable. As Nick said in an interview, "it can't all be real." He has acknowledged that there are musicians expressing real pain from their childhood, etc. in their lyrics. Not discounting working out real trauma and pain in their lyrics (he referred to Davis from Korn as being an example of this), but that there are too many out there just manipulating or taking advantage of others' pain. "Pain Merchants" as they refer to it in this song.

Pixies – Monkey Gone to Heaven Lyrics 1 year ago
the comments regarding the "5,6,7" verse are on the right track.

in numerology, Hebrew, Christian, and Islamic religion, numbers have philosophical, symbolic meanings.

5 is man (5 digits/fingers)

6 is satan or demons (666 is the symbol of the beast which is satan)

7 is the "perfect number" (777 is the symbol of God) as mentioned by others, it's all over the Hebrew scripture, the book of Revelation in the Christian New Testament, etc.

Also, he says each 3 times.
"man is 5, if man is 5, man is 5", the devil is six, if the devil is six, God is seven"

555, 666, 777

But i don't think it's necessarily intended to mock. I think he's just referring to the numerology, the symbolism of the numbers. *shrugs*

As far as "monkey gone to heaven", i've heard the theory that Frank Black was just singing the line as a way to remember the melody, so it's just nonsensical (mentioned by someone else on this page).

I've heard theories that its mocking or mean-spirited. but i don't think its necessarily mean-spirited so much as it's a critique.

My interpretation, something I thought i'd share for your consideration, is....

one critique of persons of faith is that they "don't care about the environment, because they believe they're just going to die and go to heaven anyway"...
so my interpretation is that he's saying "this monkey's gone to heaven," but also talking about the hole in the ozone and trash in the water. It's like, "the world id dying, but you arent worried because youre going to heaven."

Fishbone – Party at Ground Zero Lyrics 1 year ago
Anti-Nuclear War.

A major topic and concern in the 80's was the threat of nuclear war.

"Our Nations need new heroes"... ...politics is corrupt in general. It was then, it is now. This line is even more relevant now with social media and celebrity obsession. We need new heroes . A powerful lyric.

Fishbone – Chim Chim's Badass Revenge Lyrics 1 year ago
Great song from a criminally under-rated band. Not just ska, not just funk, not just punk, but a skillful blend. Fishbone. Norwood and Fish are among the best bass and drum players, respectively, in the biz.

I think this song is about the band itself. This album was sort of a concept album about Fishbone's dealings with the music industry/business. The album was released right after they parted ways with Columbia/Sony Records (whom they had a tumultuous relationship with). This song, and the whole album, really are a big "F-You" to the music industry.

Love the song. Has a haunting vibe. No pun intended (considering the poltergeist reference).

I wonder if the "yours is home alone, I watch the poltergeist" line is simply referring to the movies. Still fits with the break-up interpretation of the song. She likes Home Alone, while he prefers Poltergeist. It goes with the "fire and ice" image. They (the couple in the song) are very different. They have different tastes and needs that clash.

I always felt like it was about a guy who traveled a lot for work. He worked hard for himself or family--his prospects. But as he's away with work, or maybe at the point of retirement, he's looking back and wondering if it was all worth it. I think muckyneighbor's interpretation is a good one too!

The song is written by Kendall Jones. He's taking a shot at the 'powers that be' corrupting everything. He sees mainstream religion as a corruption of true Christianity or true faith in general. He's taking a shot at all the 'yes man' people out there that blindly follow corrupt leaders in various facets (government, churches, etc).

Ratanx...get your facts straight...he co-wrote the song and recorded it with them. A Holy Roller is someone who tries to buy their way into heaven. Its a jab at the greedy...and a wake up call to those who think they know God and live life in a dark place. ....its actually interesting that they still play this considering Kendall and Angelo's differing views on who Jesus is.

I watched an interview with the band...they said this song is about Jesus Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane...when He prayed that the Father's will be done over His (Christ's). Its about wanting to do God's will.
