Thank you; it's from the Jean Giraudoux play Ondine, which was my favorite of all the plays I had to read in high school, and expresses very well what it is like to feel out of place in the world. There's a good synopsis on wikipedia if you aren't into reading the whole thing |

Sebadoh – Careful Lyrics | 12 years ago |
"Careful as a soldier we're so strong" This goes right along with "watch out for my bullshit, everybody's got it." He's full of shit. He doesn't feel strong at all and is trying to convince himself that he is, which is partly why the line is repeated more than anything else in the song. Probably also trying to convince himself that he is as careful, calculating, and reasoned as a soldier might be, when he's really a wreck and is afraid he's going to do something really stupid. Safer to sit "_beside_ the truth (beside you)" |

He often says six instead of three when they play it live. Both times I've seen them, in 1992 and 1996, he said six instead of three. I don't think it has much significance; I think he's just making a little joke, like "You guys were expecting me to say 'three,' but we're going to stay up even later! Wink-wink, nudge-nudge" |
Junior Boys – Last Exit Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I suppose I should mention I am aware that most of the ways "You will never be able to escape me" can be interpreted are not positive |
Junior Boys – Last Exit Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I think you're mostly right, particularly with the changes "Get you through the *border*" "*Hide* you in the city" "A *silver* light begins to show" but I think also it's "As if you could prove it, a call" (not prevent) and the chorus is "When you think you're going, you can change your face again And if you think you're going, know I'll catch you just the same" which makes it a lot more sinister. As in, "You'll never get away from me. Even if you run away and disguise yourself, I will find you and catch you." Almost as if he is considering kidnapping her before she leaves him, which is why I think it's "As if you could prove it, a call." In the imagined scenario, he wants her to think that nobody is going to believe that she got kidnapped by her boyfriend/husband/lover if she calls for help because everybody knows they were together. This one is pretty dark, even for Junior Boys. But he delivers it with serial killer charm, which potentially turns it into a response to a southern belle/helpless woman fantasy/ruse: "I'm with another man and I can't do anything about it unless you forcibly remove me from my surroundings and take me away with you. So I will taunt you with promises of running away with you until you snap and actually abduct me. And then ravish me so that I am 'stained' and can't return to my former lover; then I will belong to you." Twisted, yes, a little--but nothing that isn't covered in a basic course on human sexuality. And yes, obviously, it would probably be pretty horrific if that actually happened. But it's also brutally honest and indicative of just how insane people can get to feeling if they are in a "oh, it's you again--I guess I'll see you next lifetime" sort of situation, especially if one of them isn't planning on coming back for another one. Perhaps I ventured off the deep end just now, but I really do think he's saying "you will never be able to escape me," which can be interpreted many ways. |
Junior Boys – Bellona Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Hmm. I hear something completely different. It's definitely not "this time I'll stay for good." I'm pretty sure instead it's "all this time I, all this time I stayed for you" and the modulated voice behind it is "well, it shines right through ya." As in, although you're trying, you can't hide what you are really feeling because it shines right out of you, or through you. But yes, I do think it's about jealousy and regret and either an affair or a near-affair (Where did that flash go? It burned my shadow gray. Where have those five days got to now?) : why did you marry someone else when I know you're in love with me--it shines right through you. These days are getting longer. The sun is gonna beat so loud You know, I think you told me you have a new name now Where did that flash go? It burned my shadow gray. Where have those five days got to now? (well it shines right through ya) all this time i (well it shines right through ya) all this time i stayed for you (x 4) I saw him in the park shade He put his hands down low What else did I see? What else did they show? You think it's so unlikely When did the city change me? Red-skied, my eyes closed The fire came so slow (well it shines right through ya) all this time i (well it shines right through ya) all this time i stayed for you (x 6) (well it shines right through ya) (x 4) ... (well it shines right through ya) (x 4) (well it shines right through ya) all this time i (well it shines right through ya) all this time i stayed for you (x 2) |
Junior Boys – More Than Real Lyrics | 12 years ago |
What's posted above is mostly right, but there are some differences that change the meaning a bit. Some of it I'm unsure of, but I'm fairly certain it's "for all the things I plan until I'll be your man" and "And if I find you, I know you'll make me feel, you make me feel more than real" (not "even if they find you") Your face, it shows you are an imposter That blank snapshot still in the parking lot You're on the screen, I feel you downtown Off on the street, walk through the underground The distance makes me want you more The scent you give, that's what I'm waiting for Your birthday sign on through your family lines for all the things I plan until I'll be your man Tonight I got your number I even know your street If you could only need me, I know we're meant to meet. And if I find you, I know you'll make me feel You make me feel more than real They put you on, in the smoking glass Your dress got torn straight through the underpass The air got blue while in my closed-in room, and I'm checking off, girl, what's left to do The distance makes me want you more The scent you give, that's what I'm waiting for Your birthday sign run through your family lines for all the things I plan until I'll be your man Tonight I got your number I even know your street If you could only need me, I know we're meant to meet. And if I find you, I know you'll make me feel You make me feel more than real Tonight I got your number I even know your street If you could only need me, I know we're meant to meet. And if I find you, I know you'll make me feel You make me feel more than real --- Depending on who played this for me, I would either feel creepy stalker-violated, or weak in the knees/take me right here on the kitchen floor because it is sexy in a transgressive way. |
Junior Boys – Birthday Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I think these are wrong all over the internet. This is what I've always thought I heard, but of course I could be mistaken: You've gone and then you missed my birthday. You've gone and left me on my own. I'm hard to take--it's cool, anyway. It's not so bad to stay at home. Is it true that it's me? You can say all the things you want to, but you don't easily if you take all this weight behind me and let it go. Now it's you. You forget all the things you want to. And you're not here in the end, so there's nothing left to say. I guess you passed me on my birthday. You slid right through the year I've grown. Now I ... can't remember anyway. Remind me to wash my hands reeeal slow. Is it true that it's me? You can say all the things you want to, but you don't easily if you take all this weight behind me and let it go. Now it's you. You forget all the things you want to. And you're not here in the end, so there's nothing left to say. You'd gone and then you missed my birthday. I know we'd do it all again. The End for cold or warm, so anyway... This time I close my eyes and really wish you'd come. Is it true that it's me? You can say all the things you want to, but you don't easily if you take all this weight behind me and let it go. Now it's you. You forget all the things you want to. And you're not here in the end, so there's nothing left to say. |
Wilco – Woodgrain Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I don't think he's being ironic or irreverent; I think he's just saying that wanting this person has worn him out and he's run out of eloquent or charming things to say, but he still wants her to know he's thinking about her. |

Chapel Club – Paper Thin Lyrics | 13 years ago |
I think I hear "seraphic eyes alight" "I'll be there when life leaves your senses" "All I could have asked for, you have been... and I can't be without" He just elides the n of "been" into "and I can't be without" (I think). I have some cuckoo theories about the first part of the first verse about lavender and green ink and something to sign, but I need to hear it better to be certain before I go too far out on a limb. |
