baker in a bad religion interview is asked about this song, he even says himself it was never meant to tell people what to do, and that minor threat don't hate people who do drink or have sex or do drugs, they were sick of being pressured into having that lifestyle because people thought it was cool , the song is about doing whatyou personally believe, look at fat mike he loves minor threat and he loves drinking and drugs, it's about mutual respect, not forcing anything on anybody and being an individual and making individual decisions whatever they are aslong as they don't hurt anybody else. it sucks that the whole hate edge thing started, but it seems to happen to all genres, pop punk for example, if you have the will power and presence of mind to be straight edge i clap my hands to you but anyone that tells you you can't be straight edge or you should be straight edge is a fuckwit |

btw just for the record fat mike and nofx and most of the other well known grandfathers of punk are about individual freedom as long as it is not detremental to anybody else, they believe in the freedom to take drugs or not too aslong as that freedom is understood, it's about respecting what is worth respecting, alot of people think it's just don't respect anything, it can look like that because very few things in this world are worth respecting, they are about peace, morality, individualism that doesn't harm the collective society. the point is individualism now is being sold as individualism but letting people do whatever the hell they want doesn't allow a society to function, there are boundries, but you can have wide boundries aslong as there is respect , morality and honesty, alot of the time the punk scene was so hated and attacked that they lashed out violently or abusively in defense of what they belived in, unfortunately it made people think its just a place of thugs who care about nobody, it's not true at all, if anything they care more |

i've been lucky enough to go to a few of the old school punk bands where the security guards just gave up and let us do what we wanted, tom gable from against me just told one of them to let us jump on the stage and shit if we wanted too same with the nofx, millencolin, rise against and pennywise show i was at. i'm in australia btw. thee song is great but, personally i don't mind a song here and there about girls and love but some many of these so called "punk bands" have made their careers on saying nothing but shit we have heard for years, plus the fact that what that mentality in culture is doing to iimpressionable minds is crazy, 13 year olds think that behaviour like that or songs about love are normal, all they become obsessed with is love and buying outfits to look like gc, i liked gc and blink and sum 41 back in the day before i was exposed to the real good stuff like nofx and bad religion and descendents etc but after a while it just wears thin, it doesnt make you think, it doesnt help society progress. the music industry may have launched sex pistols but the public not only liked them they liked the message, hence all through the 80's the indy labels took up because punk bands didnt want to be signed major and major labels only wanted them to make money of them, if the music industry infiltrates punk and turns it main stream like it has it would have been fine but the message and meaning changed, the lables couldn't shut punk down so they got involved and moulded it into something new and unrecognisable, its sad, but kepp up the good fight, there is plenty of good meaningful bands out there who are punk and not punk its just much much harder to find them, war on errorism changed me from a pop punk wanabie who felt i had to fit in into a guy who sees the world for what it is, full of fuckwits |

there is nothing wrong with main stream music as long as it is real, played by real people, written and sung by those people and not an autotune and as long as every single song isn't mind numming about bitches and getting rich and finding the one, like its all one big disney movie, most main stream music makes you dumb, it makes you think about and focus on things that tont contribute to society in any way. punk is first and foremost political, doesn't mean there cant be fun songs or love songs or emo songs in there, but what fat mike is singing about in the song is how stupid people have become, people in corporations, governments and on the street. everyones worrying about who there gona fuck or their next iphone or pumping out kids, or proving themselves to be better than everyone else, morals and ethics have gone out the window, hence the decline, we are declining as a society that will end up in chaos, because everyone will feel entitled to everything for doing nothing and people on the street will be cutting you for the shirt on your back. i'm all for free speech but free speech doesn't mean you're allowed dumb speech, thats where america has gone so wrong, its all about freedom they never stopped to realise a community can't operate with total freedom, because then nobody wants to work and help anybody else |

i don't know what the people trying to look further into the song are smoking but what it is is what it is. the fact is she wanted to be britney freakin spears or kesha or some other undeserving popstar and her and her parents paid a professional song writer to write the song for her, then they paid for the recording which the producer autotuned her voice to make it seem like she could sing. this song is everything that is wrong with the music industry, i saw an interview where she says "oh i can actually sing so people who say i cant are wrong" if she could sing then why did she use autotune? she wants to be a popstar and doesn't realise that 99 percent of popstars use methods that ruin music for all the real people not just searching fame. in conclusion, if you can't write a good meaningful song yourself and sing it yourself without computer interfearence then you dont deserve to be an artist much less a well known one |

it's about a guy who is jumping on the bandwagon because punk was the scene so he does all this stereotypical shit to fit in without understanding anything about the core structure of the movement. alot of punks start out with the anarchy ideal, its one i had myself for a while when i was younger, before you understand just how complicated the world is you think you can reset everything by causing anarchy and disbanding institutions. however alot of people who believe in the anarchist ideal do so as a means to an end, not the end, the unfortunate fact of life is to effect change quickly you need chaos and disruption, but it's not that simple, punk realised quickly in the early 80's that socialism was the better option, it is slower and mroe difficult, but it is the only one that has the ability to be done without hurting people, btw it doesn't mean socalism in the soviet sense, alot of people have been fed with this idea from america that to be a socialist means you want to enslave everybody like stalin did, unfortunately the truth is we are all enslaved by capitalism and communism, the difference is communism comes through your front door and tells you how you are going to be enslaved, capitalism comes through your back door pretending to be a friend and distracting you while your house is robbed behind your back. both not good options, anti flag stands for freedom, peace, and unity, but you need to cause a bit of disruption to get change to happen |

hahaha, while i can see the song is a joke there is obviously some truth to it, every genre of music unfortunately gets taken over by people who think they know what its all about and change it from it's first purpose, as a big punk fan it has happened with punk,, pop got hold of it which would have been cool if alot of the messages of the songs didnt disappear, i don't mind most sorts of music but there are particular scenes that can do more destruction to a person than good, it isnt good to be cutting over a bf or gf, and glorifying it when you are a successful band isnt good for impressionable listeners, i dont mind an emo song here and there, i just want to hear more out of a band than she was pretty but she broke my heart and my life is over, that shit helps nobody, and yeah i think they are refering to hate edge, not straight edge, heaps of punk bands are straight edge and not, punk is about freedom aslong as those freedoms arent damaging to yourself or other people. great lyrics but :) raw, political social and culturally significant punk forever |

i think the song in general describes the decline of society, sure things have always been not that great in the world but we increasing are living in a world of selfishness, lies, secrets and fear, and anything that happens in the world has a huge effect on everyone because of media and technology, the "given rights to all man" line seems to me to be kind of saying, we all have rights, but alot of people increasingly want rights without having responsabilities or contributing in any real way but just keep taking and perpetuating messed up systems and dealings by governments, people and companies, finally the "they say its all about to end" is i think in one part a play on how we are so fearful noadays and untrusting of people but that the biproduct of this decline in society is his realisation that things would be better if it ended, whether he means the world or capitalism or what i'm not sure but he realises that something has to give because society and communities cant function if everybody isn't contributing or protecting them. thats my take anyway, great song, love the guitar chugging |

firstly this is an awesome song and as much as i love blink i can agree that they "sold out" for the lack of a better word, i know there is more important things but when you call yourselves punk or come under the banner of punk then you can't move in the direction the band has and still claim to have those same ideals. punk is about equality, care, individuality and is more important than money, i totally agree that if you had the chance to get millions most would take it, but plenty of bands have done it the true way and kept their dignity. bottom line is punk isn't a place for writing songs to get hits, or love song after love song, it's about change and keeping society honest. lke i said a great band, i love them alot, they got me into the underground punk bands i like like nofx and bad religion but don't call them punk and don't say that it's okay to change what you do and what you believe in for money, that is why the world is so messed up as it is, dude ranch is my favourite album though, just before they got too big |

firstly i know with a lot of bands they let the song speak for itself and use the videos as another message entirely so i think that explains why the lyrics have nothing to do with animal cruelty. as for the meaning. i think the song describes the issues of daring to dream and reach the heights you dream of or whatever it is you hope for and seek but also that with gaining those heights, dreams, hopes etc comes responsibility and those who abuse or have abused it are a step away from oblivion, so basically dare to dream but be careful what you do when you get those dreams realised. |
