the way i originally interpreted this song when i first heard it was as a description of bipolar disorder... it's a little on the nose as far as song lyrics go, but i feel that it's pretty accurate... not sure what the real meaning behind it is, but this is my interpretation: "the lack of light, hollow sea, poison beaches" - imagery for depression "toothless dentists, cops that kill" - professionals who are there to help aren't always very helpful (psychiatrists that don't diagnose correctly) "can't stop shopping" - impulse buying is a symptom of mania; it's like blacking out, because when you come back down, you practically don't even remember what you bought or how much you spent "the lonesome lows don't just go away overnight" - you can't just "stop being sad"; it's not a temporary emotional state, it's an ongoing condition "dr. blind, just prescribe the blue ones" - it's really difficult to find the right combination of medications, sometimes just a shot in the dark; a blind doctor can't tell which ones are "the blue ones" "if the dizzying highs don't subside overnight" - mania can feel really good, energetic and productive, but it can also be extreme, causing delusions and psychosis "dr. blind, just prescribe the red ones" - same as above; a blind doctor can't tell which ones are "the red ones" "another one, too cold to touch" - depression can cause someone to be standoffish and unapproachable, or unable to open up "can't stop smiling" - manic "cries so much" - depressed "the square-faced man in primetime" - i think this could be referring to "normal" people judging those with mental disorders; a news anchor attempting to describe someone with bipolar ends up making them seem inferior "her mind's a padded room whenever she gets that shrink-wrapped pill thrill in her hand again" - the notion that using medication means you're weak "the first to let us know she is not the perfect woman" - society immediately labelling her as inferior "and neither are you, who can't stop shopping" - those with the same symptoms as her are inferior too |

for me, this song is definitely about being in a one-sided relationship... the whole eating metaphor is akin to the phrase "chew you up and spit you out"... it's like being picked up, broken down, and discarded "and i thank my lucky stars everyday for indoor plumbing cause i know nobody knows where i'd have ended up without it" ->interpreted literally, this refers to defecation being restricted to toilets lol... if it wasn't in the toilet, it pretty much could be anywhere, right? lol... my interpretation of this is simply that after being emotionally abused, you end up feeling lost or emotionally destroyed "caught a bit of my fur in your teeth, and you ate me" ->this would be the "chew you up" part... the abuser catches her attention, begins a relationship with her, and then completely consumes her (she becomes hopelessly infatuated) "as i went sliding down your throat they heard my cry resound: i will always be around. i thought that i would always be around." ->this line hit me pretty personally... "they" refers to the abuser's friends... during a toxic relationship that i was in, i became good friends with his friends... so even though the relationship was falling apart, i thought that i could still be friends with those people "but inside your digestive trip what was there for me to grip? i wanted nothing more than just to stay there" ->at a certain point in the relationship, there just isn't anything left to hold onto to keep the relationship going... no matter how badly you want to make things work, you can't if there's nothing holding the relationship together "the truth is i was just too dumb to stop myself from holding on. i believed in love." ->she thought that they actually were in love and she believed that if she would just hold onto their love, it could get them through the rough patch in their relationship "the truth is i was just so dumb i mistook your refuse for love" ->this one hit me personally too... misreading people, interpreting their actions as being positive despite them actually being negative... basically, thinking someone likes you even though they're actually being mean to you "clinging in the bowels as the shits poured on" ->more of the holding onto the relationship even though she's being treated very badly "i might've stayed on but the gravity released me and out, out i dropped" ->even though she still wants to stay in the relationship, she finally is completely abandoned by the abuser... this is the "spit you out" part "and now here i lay steaming." ->this is her after she's been destroyed by the relationship... she's left alone and broken that's my interpretation... getting into a relationship with someone who doesn't actually care about you, and they carelessly toss you aside without any consideration for your feelings |
