I could be wrong, but my impression is that this song is a reference to porn stars, strippers, etc.--all the women who bring pleasure to men but aren't "real"--and that supposedly they're replacing actual relationships, which is a problem. I think that's the most likely meaning, unless Donald Fagen is just writing a song about aliens, but I doubt that; his writing isn't usually that simple. |

Months ago, a girl from my school died from meningitis. This was her favorite song when she was alive. They played it at her funeral, and since then, I've loved it. I think of it as sort of the theme song/tribute to her life and death.

Absolutely true what you say about today's songs being too literal! I'm fourteen and my friends all listen to trashy autotuned in-your-face kind of stuff, and they think it's weird that I prefer the older music. If I play my music around/for my friends, they say things like "Aww, it's so slow and boring" and "What's that supposed to mean? I don't get it."

That's what I thought when I first heard it! It reminded me of the tune snake charmers always played on the cartoons I watched as a kid. I didn't know it had lyrics, though. >_< I thought it was just coincidence. |

Couldn't have said it better myself. I want to sing this song at my graduation as a solo, because I'm not singing it to any one person in particular. Everyone I've known has made me who I am today--whether they know it or not. I also want to have a slide show of photo memories going. :) |

This song always reminds me of that Woody Allen movie, Take the Money and Run. :)

What I like about this song is how simple, honest, and somewhat understated the lyrics are. It's as if it was written by a guy who maybe isn't the best with words, but cares about the girl deeply, and wrote this sweet song for her. :) |

Very catchy song. It's pretty straightforward as to what it means (i.e., NOTHING)--but for me at least, it's also hard not to like. Same goes for the whole "dance-pop" genre that's popular lately. Personally, I prefer older music and bands like Coldplay who write songs that actually mean something; but I also don't mind listening to mindless, feel-good stuff like this every once in a while.
