Tomorrow's Girls Lyrics
Our town is just like any other
Good citizens at work and play
Normal folks doin' business in the normal way
This morning was like any other
Mommies kissing daddies goodbye
Then the milkman screamed
And pointed up at the sky
Chorus:
From Sheilus to the reefs of Kizmar
From Stargate and the Outer Worlds
They're speeding towards our sun
They're on a party run
Here come Tomorrow's Girls
Tomorrow's Girls
You see them on the grass at lunch hour
Soaking up the vertical rays
In their summer dresses
A little smile can really make your day
Their kisses feel like real kisses
And when they cry they cry real tears
But what's left in your arms
When the static clears
Chorus:
They're landing on the Jersey beaches
Their engines make the white sand swirl
The heat is so intense
Earth men have no defense
Against Tomorrow's Girls
In the cool of the evening
In the last light of the triple sun
I wait by the go-tree
When the day's busy work is done
Soon the warm night breezes
Start rolling in off the sea
Yes, at lantern time
That's when you come to me
Come to me
Our home is just like any other
We're grillin' burgers on the back lawn
Some time goes by
We fall asleep with the TV on
I dream about a laughing angel
Then the laugh becomes a furious whine
Look out fellas
It's shredding time
Chorus:
They're mixing with the population
A virus wearing pumps and pearls
Lord help the lonely guys
Hooked by those hungry eyes
Here come Tomorrow's Girls

This song is a reference to the Philip K. Dick short story "Second Variety", set in a post-war world overrun by robots disguised as women, children etc who trick rival soldiers into sympathetically letting them into their military bases, then immediately turn into a whirring ball of blades that slices up and kills everything in sight. Fagen is a known admirer of Dick and has referred to his work many times, most recently in his autobiography 'Eminent Hipsters'. This song is a variant on the tale in which ships full of them arrive on planet Earth disguised as beautiful women. In Dick's story, he described the nauseating whine of the blades: "I dream about a laughing angel / Then the laugh becomes a furious whine / Look out fellas / It's shredding time." As with much of Fagen's best work, this is an incredibly dark and funny song beneath the good-time, cruisy feel of the jazzy music.

The song is a pure bit of fantasy by Fagen, influenced by his love of classic American science fiction as suggested by MCBrownShoes. Check out the cover of Galaxy Science Fiction magazine from 1964 - it's a recurring theme and the genre was full of scantily clad women.
@jrspigot hence the references to Kizmar and Shells?

Though I have not read any Philip K. Dick, nor Eminent Hipsters (I've been planning on getting to that), MCBrownSoes interp seems too well referenced to not have hit the bull's eye. As I see this song, however, I picture the Donald Fagen of today writing it with Tomorrow's Girls being rather than aliens, of an artificial intelligence genesis, created by us to eventually destroy us.

I could be wrong, but my impression is that this song is a reference to porn stars, strippers, etc.--all the women who bring pleasure to men but aren't "real"--and that supposedly they're replacing actual relationships, which is a problem. I think that's the most likely meaning, unless Donald Fagen is just writing a song about aliens, but I doubt that; his writing isn't usually that simple.
@Bunko0 I thinks it’s referring to trans women….🤷🏻♂️

Great song! It's about how modern women sometimes seem like they are from another planet to us dudes. Best bit is the hypnotizing bridge in the middle, then the abrupt switch back to reality for the guitar solo.
I’ve always heard this one as more playful than threatening, shredding time aside… though that could be referring to surfing. ; )
@Goatllama ahhhhhh…..very nice. Hadnt thought of shredding time. But the go tree and lantern time def means near the water.
