The Psychedelic Furs – Mr. Jones Lyrics | 5 years ago |
the hellish boredom of the middle class and homogenized cultural conformity... < |
The Psychedelic Furs – Highwire Days Lyrics | 5 years ago |
Pretty clear indictment of the news media...In "Ghost in You" someone mentioned that they thought it was about the news media and Lady Diana...I think Butler is continuing the theme here. Powerful instrumentals punctuate the deadpan lyrics. < And we paid for the cross and the nails On tomorrow's pages>> Maybe I'm wrong but it sounds like a critique of the various media offering up crap instead of news. From the protagonist' high (maybe drug-fueled high?) he can see through it all: < I see through the games you play>> |
The Psychedelic Furs – Into You Like a Train Lyrics | 5 years ago |
Well...kinda obvious, right? ;) Sex, no romance, just good hard sex and no complications. The protagonist is being completely honest in a world where dishonesty and false promises prevail. Quite an astonishing song for its time. The Furs first two albums were filled with honest rage which later became muted with their quest for mainstream acceptance. A shame, really. This song is absolutely brilliant. |
Dinosaur Jr. – Blowing It Lyrics | 6 years ago |
I love J. Mascis but a lot of his songs are about the same thing -- alienation. This song fits it to a "t." "Things I'd say but just can't face All it means to say them " He'd like to tell people to get the hell out but "just can't face" doing it. "Am I acting on something real? Or am I blowing it again? " Unsure of what to do (surprise, surprise)... |
The Psychedelic Furs – Midnight To Midnight Lyrics | 7 years ago |
I'm guessing here but this is the LP that really broke the Furs big time with a label that pushed the hell out of this release. They played all the nighttime talk shows and toured all over the world. I think the song relates to Richard Butler's growing discomfort over their soon-to-be worldwide fame: Or or throw it all away> and: Of big time and lies> - all the PR smoke blown up their ass. Their manager told them they'd be as big as the Cure but it didn't happen. This is the album the Furs all but disowned. |
The Psychedelic Furs – Goodbye Lyrics | 7 years ago |
The whole "Forever Now" LP sounds like a coked-out nightmare -- and I don't mean that as an insult. This song sounds like a partyer who keeps running into a person he's getting tired of but who runs in the same circles and he can't get rid of. "Hello to you hello to me And yes I really care" -- very sarcastic delivery; you don't believe he does CARE "I'll see you all around sometime I hope that I'm not there" - in other words, he doesn't want to see this person who is probably a real pain in the neck! |
The Psychedelic Furs – All of This and Nothing Lyrics | 7 years ago |
Seems pretty obvious it's about either a breakup or a suicide ("you didn't leave me anything / that i can understand"); Not so sure I get the doctor "crawling in through the door" though... |
The Gits – Another Shot Of Whiskey Lyrics | 8 years ago |
Sounds like a pain-in-the-ass, depressing hipster is walking in being his usual self, driving the singer to seek out "Another shot of whiskey and that's about the Only way I can listen anymore" Brilliant song |
The Psychedelic Furs – Shock Lyrics | 8 years ago |
I love the Furs but this is a truly wretched song. Butler must have come up with the lyrics while sitting on the toilet, it's that bad. Here are my thoughts -- it's an ode to S&M love. Really, that's about it. < When the lights get low>> ok... < When the lights get low>> Feeling disgusted with himself for his violent fetish. Feeling disgusted with myself for bothering with this subpar song. |
The Psychedelic Furs – It Goes On Lyrics | 8 years ago |
my 2 cents worth: A group of trendy, self-destructive partyers, caught in a cycle that never ends. I'm guessing there is a bit of wife-swapping and parties that rage out of control The psycho looks up to the protagonist of the song It goes on again> and the parties continue... |
The Psychedelic Furs – President Gas Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I think he was pretty disgusted with Thatcher-era politics as well as the previous left wing administrations' inability to get much done for the working man. That said, Butler was no fan of Reagan... |
The Psychedelic Furs – Sister Europe Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I think Butler mentioned in an interview that it was written about his girlfriend at the time who was always jetsetting about Europe, he never knew where she'd be one day from the next. Though I have no bloody idea what this part means in that context: "buy a car and watch it rust/ sister see them fall to dust/they fall around /in another crowded room/paint me like the shirt i'm in/honestly " |
Camper Van Beethoven – Seven Languages Lyrics | 14 years ago |
This song reminds me of the film, "Slacker" - it's definitely a mid-late '80s sorta feeling of people just hanging out in a college town with very little going on. The protagonist is a guy who thinks he can do something ("if I had just a little time/I could speak 7 languages/I could walk on water") unrealistic but in the end doesn't bother to follow this pursuit ("I woke up with a word in my head/And as far as I know/It has no meaning at all") My two cents worth! |
