Donny didn't write the song...Leon Russel did. For me, that makes the performance even more amazing. He has a connection with this song that seems so strong, yet he didn't actually write the song...the mark of a great performer.
One of the few things I'm thankful towards American Idol is the resurgence of this song- quite a few contestants have performed it. |

Guy is still lonely and broken inside...
Guy meets his "angel" and everything else just flows right in his life.
Great song, other have commented on the melody, but I'll repeat- it's simple, brilliant, and cheery. Sound-wise, the slow crescendo throughout the song give this growing feeling of exhilaration...great stuff. |

The "door's closing" at the end of the song comes from METRA trains in the Chicago area. There's this male voice that comes on that announces your stops coming up and says when the door's closing and such, and seeing as Umph is from the Chi-town area, they have a lotta love for those sounds. Just like the other song on Anchor Drops that says "next stop- Chicago" |

Should be "when the dam runs dry" i.e. when the whiskey runs out.
This is a rare Umphrey's song that actually tells a story...it's a Western song, about a cowboy who's down on his luck, coming home anticipating cards, drinking, and some good food. |

Clearly some sort of forbidden longing in this song. A couple of times I've listened to it and thought "The Terminator"...must be the running thing they keep mentioning, as in an "I have to run and save the world, but I need your bod" kind of thing.

I see IM as heading in the direction of pop music...they relocated to L.A. from Israel, they're adding more and more songs with lyrics to their albums...I guess I don't fault them for that, as that's where the money is, plus they can tour easier from the States. but I also see their trance songs as becoming a bit formulaic- the typical breakdown/buildup 2/3 of the way through the song, etc.
Personally I'd rather not hear partially-developed songs with lyrics/rapping, when some of their instrumentals are absolute majesty. |
