Angela Lewis – In Love Lyrics 11 years ago
Lewis' comments:
"I'm fairly certain this was the first 'corny love song' I wrote. The reception of it was so well compared to my others, that I decided to try and utilize that type of lyrics more in my future songs, which ended up comprising most of The Common Cure. All in all, a good portion of that CD was written over a period of two months [December 2011 - January 2012], with a few stragglers here and there and tweaks later on.

The meaning? The title."

Angela Lewis – We'll Never Know Lyrics 11 years ago
Lewis' comments:
"This is one of the older songs off of The Common Cure. I wrote it almost four years before recording the album. One day, about a week before pre-production, I found an old recording of it. For kicks, I rerecorded it as is, and sent it to my producer. This and "Yes", and "Call it As You Will" were last minute add-ons. ("Yes" wasn't written until about a week before choosing the songs to track.)

As far as it's meaning, the song in a nutshell is just a giant 'what if?'.
I had been talking to this guy for a while, but both of us were too stubborn to admit we had feelings for each other or apologize. I don't even remember what the fight was about. Something trivial, no doubt. I was having a difficult time putting how I felt into words, so I wrote a song. This is one of few that are directly caused by AND about a specific event."

Angela Lewis – Traffic Lights Lyrics 11 years ago
Lewis' comments:
"Most all of the lyrics of this song stemmed off the the second line of the opening verse and the first line of the chorus. My producer and I just kind of took the idea of tension between city and rural life and ran with it. Since this one in particular is so vague, I'd rather leave it open to interpretation for the listeners to decide for themselves."

Angela Lewis – Shapeshifter Lyrics 11 years ago
Lewis' comments:
"Towards the end of my senior semester of high school (I graduated early), I was starting to get really bogged down. I dealt daily with people who did all they could to make it hell, and there was a lot of major drama and issues circling around. This song is the struggle of dealing with the stress, while pretending for other's eyes that nothing's wrong. It was one of the more difficult songs to release due to how personal the lyrics are."

Angela Lewis – Tomorrow Lyrics 11 years ago
Lewis' comments:
"This song was written while driving down a dark highway at around midnight, tapping on the steering wheel and humming my thoughts out-loud. It had been a particularly long day, but at the moment, I honestly didn't care; it was a new day."

Angela Lewis – Daydream Lyrics 11 years ago
Lewis' explanation:
"This is the song for the smooth-talkers, the players, and the Casanova's.
However, the mouse in this particular game of wits has turned the tables on the cat itself."

Angela Lewis – Call It As You Will Lyrics 11 years ago
Lewis' explanation:

"This is from the point of view of the 'best friend', or 'friend-zone', and having to watch that person go after people who don't appreciate them for their full worth.

The 'narrator' can come across as cynical towards the idea of love from observation of all the friend's failed relationships. However, the narrator is willing to 'be a fool' for that person."

Angela Lewis – Yes Lyrics 11 years ago
Lewis' explanation:
"This song is different than anything I've ever written.

It's certainly different musically, and one of the more complicated ones I've put out.

Lyrically, it's one of a kind, in that even I have no idea who it's about. There's only so many break-up songs, end of friendship songs, hope it work out songs, and corny love songs you can write before you get burned out and need something different.

Now, if I said I had originally set out to write such a confusing, yet crystal clear contradiction of a song, I'd be lying. Truthfully, I really just wanted to stomp, clap, and tap on things that aren't musical instruments with drumsticks. This song was spawned out of a moment of pure, whimsical mayhem.

What is it about? This song isn't about the one who got away, the one I left, or the one I would've liked to have been with. It isn't even about anyone I know (as far as I know... I could be wrong, after all).

For me, this is about the one who will win me over in the end.
For others, this song is either the same meaning, or about the one who already has."

Angela Lewis – Waiting Lyrics 11 years ago
Lewis' explanation:
"In a nutshell, this song is a 'what if?'

It's about the person you'll be with in the end. Have you met them already? Dated them? Has this person not come along yet?
Or is it someone you already know that you're determined to win over as well?

We'll all find out soon enough."

Angela Lewis – Effortless Lyrics 11 years ago
Lewis' explanation:
"The end of a close relationship.
In my case, platonic, but others could relate to it as a romantic relationship.

That kind where by the time everything comes to a head, you've already let go of the situation and are done dealing with it. You've already moved on. You feel at peace, yet sad. Relieved, almost. In some ways, you wonder if it was something you did - or didn't - do. But in the end, retaining the relationship just isn't worth the effort.

As far as the filtered ending, it was supposed to be symbolic of an answering machine message. Sometimes it's just easier to say what you have to say in a song rather than a phone call."

Sufjan Stevens – Chicago (Adult Contemporary Easy Listening Version) Lyrics 14 years ago
This is just an attempt, since I've struggled with these for a long time, but this is what I got out of them.

Bridge:

You came to take us
(You came to take us)
All things go, all things go

(If I was right or wrong I)
To recreate us

(Count it now) {that might be "can't live down"?}
All things grow, all things grow

(Running away from things that)
We had our mindset

(can't resist)
All things know, all things know.

(Show what we all can't see yet; blind and deaf.)
You had to find it
All things go, all things go

You came to take us
(Straight from my legs to my heart)??

All things go, all things go
(Take me this;)

(with what we are or all were)
To recreate us
(getting less;)

(running away from things that)
We had our mindset
(can't resist)

(All that we are can't see yet)
You had to find it
(Can't and won't)
