I think he said that too. Lol. Convince is a strong word, it's more like enlighten(ing), which is what all Tool songs are about. |

It's a throwback to, or nod at, their glam metal/hair band days. It's not that big of a secret. The same goes for their lyrics, if you listen to them enough. Most people aren't receptive to their lyrics anyhow cuz they can't get the feeling right. You have to be affected in order to understand the affect, and the meaning, behind their songs. |

Another theory could be that he's using the emotional experience of going through life as a drug addict as a metaphor or anecdote for the Iraq War at that time. Playing on the emotions with alot of play on words always makes for great, cryptic song. |

This whole album sounds like it shoulda been made in the 80's. Overall, the sound is completely dated. Especially in reference to the double bass pedal tracks (almost reminiscent of early Metallica). Awesome new sound to my ears though (never really got into them, or this type of music really, so it was a perfect introduction). Imarama's a black metal standard, hands down. |

It does have a bit of a concept album feel to it. I'm inclined to agree with SCo88 because that's the most in-depth interpretation I've heard of this song (especially that "Vision of 9" line. That always threw me off). For awhile, I just listened to the whole album like it was Deftones cd (feeling the music instead of the lyrics). One of the first "non-single/b-side" tracks I heard off the album that attracted my attention. It's too bad they couldn't make a good follow-up album. |

Sidenote: on the subject of his genre anonimity, I'd say he's kinda like a psychedelic blues player, like Janis Joplin with Big Brother & The Holding Company or The Kozmic Blues Band. |

If anyone posts the lyrics to "Tomorrow" off his debut album (Carnival Of Life), I'd be happy to comment. As far as hit singles go though, this ain't one of my favorites, but it's still pretty good for being overrated. Lol. I never could get into that circus organ sound he got out of his Hammond to accent the bass parts (I'm just glad he wasn't playing a Warlitzer like the guy from The Animals). |

I think Petecb may have in point in regards to the...format of the song. The singer speaks mostly in the 3rd person; as an observer of other peoples behavior towards a certain scenario. Or the whole point of the song could be as abstract and satircal as the title line of the chorus. I do like Dispraiser's take on it though- God's gotta call it quits sometime. This is the first song I've heard by them. Hope they can up the ante. |

He is pretty clever with the wordplay, I admit, but he has a tendency to put it out of context or at random moments in a song. Obscurities are fine in poetry, but in music it's alot harder to follow, and that sometimes undermines the message- inasmuch as playing the same riff over and over again is monotonous. Lyrics like that need to be built up to. Vocally, his phrasing is almost always the same throughout the album. |

After hearing this track (and some of the others off the album), I've come to the conclusion that Josh Homme should start his own garage rock band so he can have an excuse to write shorter songs. All the songs off the album are just too damn elaborate and monotonous, lyrically and musically respectively. Nevertheless, I do love the intro to this song. It's like it started out as a really cool jam, and then it reverted to the theme of every other song on the album. |

To the people with grudges against the depiction of Morrison in the Doors movie: I think it's possible to think, do or say anything when you're fucked up and out of your mind (or drunk off your ass etc, etc). To be completely honest, if I was there, I wouldn't have been offended or appalled at all if he said some random bullshit I didn't agree with. I'd be laughing my ass off (because who the hell would identify themselves with what he said when it isn't true. People who feel guilty?...) Anyways, this is one of my favorites because it amazes me how much one person can go off on a tangent and still make a poignant point with a really cool hook (that chorus is powerful). The interpretation is up for grabs for me though. I think they're all pretty accurate to some degree. Keeping thinking abstractly. |

Read the final verse, he's definitely not referring to a substance. It's an actual person ("If you need a rhyme to kill the singer/ shoot me dead before I make it through"). And that isn't singular. |

I actually still consider Soundgarden to be a grunge band (just not my favorite). But we all have to concede that they were, in fact, one of the founding fathers of the genre in reference to the notorious "Deep Six" album they appeared on (and Nirvana just made it popular). But out of all the grunge bands of that time, we're writing about AIC because they are the most versatile band of that time period. |

And yes, he was obviously writing about or having a bum trip while he was in this really apathetic state of mind. I think he was recalling his childhood and how fucked up it was to the extent he didn't give a shit anymore about what happens to himself when it comes to people in authority. It's another morbid, satirical song by AIC that I just love. My favorite band [grunge or otherwise]: The Eclectic Alice In Chains. |

My first impression was that this song was about the death of a relationship (an untimely one) and the scenarios or situations one goes through when bereft, like regret, depression, & reminescence. Definitely one of my favorite songs of all time by them (I don't know why the hell it didn't get put on any of their compilation cds). |

I think the song definitely is a reference to loneliness or alienation due to a battle within (whether the battle is against drugs is up in the air) or just plain loneliness. Either way, this song is anthem for grunge rock (in a simple, compelling articulation/form). The lyric "My privacy is raped," is he referring to some unwanted attention from somebody? |

I have to admit, when I first heard this song I thought it was about a bf/gf relationship on the rocks due to drug use and how the lyricist wishes people would just stop hassling him about it to the point he just says "Fuck it. If I left forever, would you?" in a suicidal sense. It gets kind of satirical too with the line "Hail to the flood again/ the same old trip it was back then/ so I made a big mistake/ would you rather see it worse my own way." But, I know better now though. To 2 of the greatest grunge (or otherwise) vocalists of all time, RIP Layne Staley/Andrew Wood. |

The fact of the matter is words still have meaning and value to people even if there's no standard or proper explanation for the articulation. That's why the song is open to so many various interpretations, and that's what makes it a classic I guess. Cornell obviously had a malaise emotion in mind when he wrote it though. It's apparent. Maybe a little bitterness as well. |

This song sounds so punk rock to me. In a way, the lyrics sound like a big, albeit indirect, "Fuck you" to the authority that solicits drugs by saying, "We do this by choice and of our own free will," and now it's all the rage ("All us cast asides became what has become"). Kinda sad ending in hindsight. |

Why do they not play this stuff on the fucking radio. Alice In Chains never made a bad song in my opinion, and this is one of the greatest one's off the Facelift album. Seriously, there should be a petition for the radio station to start mainstreaming these quote/unquote "b-sides" instead of the latest shit coming out. Grunge is forever... |

I was reading somewhere Chris Cornell's interpretation of the song and how it was just derived from random phrases going through his mind at the time. He was suprised as to how so many people connected with the song in that regard (and how some actually found hope within). I've always found this song to be rather dreary, but insightful to some degree, especially the chorus. To me, the song is an outcry to some spiritual deity- the title to me is kind of redundant when referring to a Black Hole Sun (but as we all know, it's a play on words [Son instead Sun])- explaining why it should wash away all the sadness and replace it with nothingness because the lyricist feels nobody deserves to live in this kind of sorrow (a bold statement directed at the state of the world then and now). It has a perpetual quality to it, and I think that's why so many people admire it. Personally, I prefer "Fell On Black Days" to this song. It's a timeless classic nonetheless. Love Grunge! |
