Mumford & Sons – White Blank Page Lyrics 13 years ago
This song just wrenches emotions from me...this band is good at that. But seems like the lyrics strike me that it can be interpreted in a couple of ways. My take is that it seems like a guy that maybe had a relationship with a woman...and maybe things had not being going well and he did something to screw up like maybe he'd cheated on her or something ...and now she's either left him to be with another that she thinks will love her more OR the guy knows he has to live with this big secret of what he's done. He seems to think that either the other guy is not good enough for her...perhaps partly because of jealousy or that he himself is not good enough for her now that he's cheated on her. But the "swelling rage" just seems like jealous frustration coming out. The line "You didn't think when you drove me to the brink....You desired my attention but denied me affection" sounds like him justifying an affair by saying she... the girl.. didn't want to have sex/show him love and he needed love/sex from someone. But now he regrets it but it's too late. Now he's forced to deal with the consequences...but I think because he's realized how much he loves her...he'll do whatever, even lie to her.. to keep her with him.

Royal Wood – Do You Recall? Lyrics 13 years ago
Can't believe no one has commented on this song yet. I love this song/artist. I am not clear on the songs meaning....intitially it was the piano melody that captured me. But the lyrics seem to make me think it's like something major has happened and it just made him shut down, forget where he was, what he was doing, and just for a moment or maybe for even longer... was so stunned that perhaps now he's kinda lost his marbles because his mind can't or won't process it. But he seems to be searching for answers now.....It's like on the brink of a breakdown...but not sure it's fixing to happen or is coming out of it. Maybe that's up for interpretation.
I don't know, I could be way off. But the melody especially has an introspective sound and I can't explain it. But I'm so drawn to this song....

I've heard soooo many covers. The best recent one I've heard is by The Civil Wars. You'd have to youtube it...but wow. Filled with such longing. And it being a duet by a man/woman (Joy & John Paul)makes it fresher...I think it is ripe for revival..and they would be just the ones to do it.

I like your theory about it. Especially the "slight of hand"...to ..."slide of hand" part being wrongs he's done to perhaps changing to tenderness or maybe reaching out? And I think you could be correct on both with the cleansing force of the water/lake. It could be cleansing as in washing away "sins" ...but it could be also be tears...(maybe a nod to a 'cry a river of tears' phrase??) which also happen to be cleansing for the soul as well. So works both ways I think.

Radiohead – Codex Lyrics 13 years ago
This song made me cry when I first heard it. I love it. To me...best song off the The King of Limbs album. I love how the "trills" of the keyboard make it sound like fingertips skimming water. And the piano just make it sound so ethereal and like it's late...under the night sky. I haven't fully digested it's lyrics fully to understand the meaning. I'm only going by initial emotion of the melody mostly. Just a lonely introspective kind of song. But my first thoughts of the lyrics are it sounds like a person that feels like they want to end their life because of tremendous guilt because they've hurt people in the past. "Slight of hand" seems like he's been a liar to me. "No one gets hurt" to me implies he has hurt people and this act won't hurt anyone at all. He just wants to slip away quietly...no one has to be hurt any more."Just dragonflies flying to the side" I mean...it's like he's concerned about the bugs getting in the way of his "jump"? I am probably way off. "The water's clear...and innocent" seems like a metaphor for him...he wants to HAVE clarity and innocence. And emersing oneself in water has always been symbolic of washing away ones sins. Just seems that the scene is all so inviting because of it's sereneness ...almost seductive & floating/sinking.
I love how one tends to love Radiohead songs even more when you sit and let the lyrics soak in.

One of the most romantic songs I've ever heard. So beautiful and intimate.

The Civil Wars – Girl with the Red Balloon Lyrics 13 years ago
Could this song be any more achingly beautiful? Can't believe no one has posted yet. For me...this song is about "the one that got away" but it seems like they are that for each other. Some mysterious man that she loved and perhaps she pushed him away or he left because he knew he was no good for her or it could have been caused by a misunderstanding. The "man with no name" could mean one night stand...but it almost makes me think she doesn't want to say who it is. Either to painful to say his name or can't divulge who the man was. Who knows..? And she is lonely and can't move on because he's the only one she'll ever love. And yet IDK. I could be way off. I love how the chorus reminds me of a turn-of-the-century circus which makes it sound dreamy or like a fantasy.
Seriously...The Civil Wars are the best thing to happen to music in a while. Love them.

I love when JP sings "I don't have a choice but I still choose you". Sometimes you wanna be with somebody but either they don't want you or there are other factors/obstacles in the way leaving you with no choice. I just love this duo. They are so awesome. They are gonna be huge....I can just feel it.

Radiohead – Videotape Lyrics 13 years ago
I love this song as almost everything that Thom Yorke even touches I love. But this one has been a fav. Recently I listened to it with a different perspective. My son came to me with a school project of making a playlist with a novel they had to read. The Road by Cormac McCarthy. I looked at it differently after we chose this song. It seems to me that the song is about a man who knows he's dying ...maybe feels he's moments away from death...and he's using a videotape to say goodbye and give last instructions on life. Videotapes are just tangible memories. Maybe a loved one is being left behind and he wants them to know how much they meant to him and he couldn't say it "face to face"...sometimes that's hard because the emotions are so overwhelming that you can't even speak because you just want to weep and so goodbye thru videotape can be better/easier. Makes me think of that movie as well as the true story where the dad dying of cancer makes all these videotapes for every stage of their kid's life that he can look at as he grows up...giving advice about every day stuff like changing the oil to dating to tying a tie....because they won't live to teach them that stuff. Maybe it's a similiar feeling. A goodbye...but also a way that they can still have him still with them even if it's just images on a screen to comfort them. A last gift.
IDK...I just love it. It's so emotional and intimate sounding. I want to cry every time I hear it.

Editors – No Sound But the Wind Lyrics 13 years ago
My son came to me with his summer reading list for school. One of the books was The Road by Cormac McCarthy. He had to do a project on the book...one choice was a music playlist for the book. He asked for my help in choosing songs because my tastes tend to be rock/indie/alternative and that would fit better than anything else. So I began reading the book to know good songs to suggest. Within the first IDK...15-20 pages, I saw the "There was no sound but the wind.." line. Made me think of this song as a possiblity. I made a mental note. I later listened to the song specifically to listen closely to the lyrics (this was The New Moon version that I had). After reading more of the book....I knew it was TOO much of a coincidence between the song and book. Which is why I researched more about his inspiration for it. One of the other songs we settled on for his project was a cover Editors did of a Talking Heads song "Road to Nowhere"...it's accoustic and not upbeat like the original. It's more idk...somber or quiet. Makes me wonder if he was still inspired by The Road novel. I haven't seen the movie...but the book gets under your skin and never leaves you. Other songs we've included for the playlist is Muse-Apocalypse Please, The Dead Weather-Will There Be Enough Water?, The Black Keys-So He Won't Break, & Radiohead-Videotape among a few others. Now he just has to write his paper on the relevance of these songs to the book.

THANKS! My question to people that say all the crap about "Muse has sold out" or "I hate that Muse is associated with Twilight" or blah blah blah and YET claim they are die-hard Muse fans...is this: Would you say all that crap to Matt's face? If the answer is "yes" then you really are NOT a true Muse fan. If the answer is "no"...then you are a hypocrite! I wouldn't care if their music was in Dora the Explorer...it's Muse and Matt's a friggin' genius and they should be able to do what they want with THEIR music without fans complaining about stupid stuff.

The Black Keys – The Only One Lyrics 14 years ago
I love this song. It's such a sexy love song. The whole entire album is pretty sexy. But The Only One is just exceptional. I agree....it's just about being in love so much that you can't hardly see straight. Like you are just hypnotized by someone. And no one else comes close to capturing your attention. Although the line "Like a ghost, the one I love most...disappears when I get near" definitely says that the girl is a bit elusive or perhaps isn't as in love with him as he is with her. But I can't get enough. Just bought the CD 2 days ago...and this track is in my top 3 of ones I play the most. I love the beat of the song as well...

Muse – Neutron Star Collision (Love Is Forever) Lyrics 14 years ago
I love this. And aside from the usual Twilight Haters that will hate this song for that reason alone...I applaud that it is not a typical sounding mainstream song to release as a first single off a soundtrack even if it is Twilight...what with the slow intro and slow/piano ending. I hope it takes off...

That said...my favorite part is the chorus. While I ADORE Matt's falsetto...I do so love to hear him sing in full voice. Lyrics have been called cheesy on blogs and youtube but I don't think they are at all. I think they are romantic lyrics...but I always think that about MAtt's lyrics.. :) BTW...any declaration of love can come off sounding cheesy. It's only because we tend to be jaded about love itself that we can think that way. I would love a T-shirt that says "MUSE fans-Our Love is Forever!" lol

But knowing that he wrote this after he and Gaia broke up makes me sad for Matt. :( And that said, by the lyrics it sounds like she left Matt...or didn't wanna make up her mind and commit to him like he had hoped or something. She must be an idiot to let him go. Sorry Gaia, but we're all thinkin' it.

The Black Keys – Tighten Up Lyrics 14 years ago
Also...I think the one line is...

"Living just to keep going
Going just to be sane..
All the while NOT KNOWIN'..
Such a shame"

--that's what it sounds like he's singing to me anyways..

I absolutely am obsessed with this song right now. I love the sound, the lyric, the video. I really dig this band so much. This song is so sexy...I can't get enough. I love the change in tempo in the last minute of the song.
But I think it's about a guy that used to be pretty wild and promiscuous himself, a real player that didn't even believe true love existed and didn't care...but now he finds himself so crazy in love with a girl and she is just like his former self...wild and refuses to commit to him alone. Kinda relationship karma. He knows she's probably gonna break his heart in the end but he can't break free of the spell she's got him under nor does he want to break free.

The Velvet Underground – I'm Set Free Lyrics 14 years ago
Although it is probably about drugs and if so...I agree with mr. v that it could be about having a moment of clarity. Maybe reaching bottom and at a turning point to change.

But for some reason when I listen to it and before knowing about the drug use....I thought it was about coming out of a bad relationship. "Set free"...single again. And being "bound" in a committed relationship. Like one that you keep working on and it never gets better but you just can't break free from...until one day...you finally break free mind, body and soul. And you realize you are over them and able to move on....finally. Maybe they hurt you so bad that you can't see them the same way ever again or perhaps they've just thru in the towel as well and you just are off the hook about keeping on trying. Which would explain using the words "set free" rather than "I am free"..."to set" implies that someone else held you prisoner and gave you the gift of freedom. But seems to have a jaded perspective about relationships because of the line "find a new illusion"...everybody seems perfect when you fall in love at first, but soon they have problems, issues, that always seem to tear a relationship down. IDK...I could be way off...or just where my mind is at when I listen. BTW...I love the Beck/Thom Yorke cover of this alot.

Anya Marina – Satellite Heart Lyrics 14 years ago
I think I agree with the majority of interpretations on this thread. The whole
"I'm a satellite heart...lost in the dark...I'm spun out so far...you stop, I start...But I'll be true to you"
is so brilliant. It so captures that feeling when you somehow realize how you've made someone your whole world. When things are going well, you don't realize how dependent you've become on someone for your happiness....but when things don't go well, like the person leaving/breaking your heart...then even tho they are gone...your life still totally revolves around them. You still think about them constantly, wonder how to get them back, replay all the conversations over and over in your own head, can't love anyone else, etc. You spin out of control somewhat.
It's such a lovely, floaty kind of song...and a bit sad but yet a hint of being stubborn...with the declaration of "I'll be true to you..no matter what you do....Yeah, I'll be true to you" just refusing to even try and move on and get over them even tho they hurt them deeply.

Thom Yorke – The Clock Lyrics 14 years ago
I love this song. I actually love the acoustic versions of him alone playing this on the Hummingbird Gibson guitar. But the rythym reminds me of a ticking clock that seems to be going just a bit too fast. But it seems so much more powerful played acoustic. I can't get enough of Thom.

Bon Iver & St. Vincent – Rosyln Lyrics 14 years ago
I love this song. I think the idea of people liking this song less just because it's on the New Moon soundtrack is just as bad as people liking this song only because of it being on the soundtrack. I know the Twi-haters would be happier if they had music that was all Jonas Brothers or something...but I respect the fact that they have put thought into the songs they include and actually have quality soundtracks. Some artists I weren't familiar with and I ended up liking them so much I bought and enjoy previous albums. St. Vincent being one example.

But this song is so beautiful...has a real longing feeling to it. I agree with a previous poster about it being about being pushed around and down. When one feels that way...sometimes its hard to fight back against something stronger because you feel if you muster enought hope/energy to try and still fail you'll just fall further down into sadness. Don't know if that makes sense.

I wish Bon Iver & St. Vincent would collaborate on and entire album of new music. Their covers on youtube such as Neil Young's Harvest Moon are excellent.

I interpreted these lyrics from a guys perspective...even though it's really either/or...Allison is singing lead but Jack is back-up sorta...almost equal (which is ironic that he sings "I never said we was equal".LOL I think I thought from a guy's perspective because I assumed the lyrics might have been Jack's.

Wow...thanks to whoever got the lyrics on so quickly. Not sure what the lyrics mean...I don't think I've absorbed them enough. But makes me think of a relationship where the girl treats the guy like sh!t...and he knows she'll leave him soon but he's so in love...well maybe not love, more like addicted is closer to the right word, but he doesn't even care that she's killing him little by little...drop by drop. I also sense anger/revenge and maybe he wants to hurt her back, like take her down with him? Regardless of if I understand the lyrics correctly...I love the song.

The Flaming Lips – She Don't Use Jelly Lyrics 14 years ago
My thoughts on the song is that it's about being unable to connect emotionally and low self-esteem. In each instance they all substitute something meaningless for something genuine.

The toast girl makes me think that she'd rather just have meaningless sex in the morning than to make a breakfast for the guy...because that would send the message that she cared about him. It would be a sweet gesture that a typical girlfriend would do and that's not her.

The magazine guy...like many others have posted seems to me, to be about masterbation. He can't connect intimately for whatever reason to actual women and uses porn/fantasy as a substitute.

And the tangerine girl seems to me that she doesn't like herself enough to just be her natural self. She's always changing her outward appearance/persona in hopes of getting attention and doesn't feel happy as she is.

The Flaming Lips – Suddenly Everything Has Changed Lyrics 14 years ago
This is one of my favorite songs by this band. I really connect to it. It's just my take on it but I think it's about your mind wandering during the most boring or random of moments. It reminds me of my own life. I am part-time housewife/part-time mural artist...so I have alot of alone time and I like that but I find that I live in my own head alot. Frequently, when I am alone, usually doing mundane chores...especially these quieter chores such as laundry or driving in the car to run errands with music playing (that's my favorite place to really enjoy experiencing music)...my mind will drift to something random or a memory from the past. Or I find myself daydreaming...and often it makes me feel nostalgic, melencholy or even thinking on a very deep level about life and death. When things are hectic and so busy...you don't have time to slow down and think like that... but in those moments when you do slow down on some simple physical task and your mind is free to think...those type of thoughts tend to sneak up on you and catch you off guard and it can sometimes even rattle you a bit. But that's just my take on it. I really love this song...

The Hoosiers – Everything Goes Dark Lyrics 14 years ago
I agree leemcgavinjoey. I think it seems almost as if she's already gone...as in a ghost and sees someone just like she was and it's like she is sad because she would like to warn her but can't. I don't know... I guess it's because of the observant point of view to the song that makes me think it's a vain warning. And the buildup at the end with the voices mingling and wailing somewhat...reminds me of a ghost or the wind wailing. It's just beautiful and like a previous poster said, creepy as well. I love Irwin's voice....rates up there with Matt Bellamy in style for me.

First discovered this band thru Live at Abbey Road show. I loved their music so much I bought the album on I-tunes. They said on the show that this song was about girls who fall for guys that everyone else around them can see they are not good...gonna break their hearts, mess them up, etc (I'm paraphrasing) but they just don't see it or refuse to. For some reason, maybe it's the magical sounding melody...but it always makes me think of Alice in Wonderland. Would be good for the Tim Burton version soundtrack.
But I really love this song and band.

Muse – Resistance Lyrics 14 years ago
Well I am a Muse fan and 1984 has always been in my top 5 favorite books of all time. I was in high school and read it IN the year 1984 and I got the 1984 theme of the album right away. There's certainly no need to hate on the Twilight fans...I enjoy the Twilight series as well. And APPARENTLY Matt, Dom & Chris certainly don't mind being part of the soundtracks. And Dom has already said that there is a very good chance that they will have a song on the Eclipse soundtrack as well. And being an avid fan of Muse...whatever Matt, Dom and Chris decide to do with their music and whatever they feel they want to associate their music with is their right and priviledge...so, who are you to judge them? Whatever soundtrack they are in that you happen to hate...it doesn't lesson the band's awesomeness or hinder them from producing epic music (as we've seen with Resistance)...nor does it mean they are a sell-out. Lighten up will ya!

Muse – Con-Science Lyrics 14 years ago
I think this song is so simple and yet haunting. It being about the death of someone really comes thru. I was with my mother when she passed away. It was early morning and it was just me and my Dad alone with her. She had been ill a while and we knew the end was near. That feeling of a life slipping away and it's just so very quiet. Just utter silence. There's a moment of shocked stillness when your mind is momentarily grasping the knowledge which really seems portrayed in this song...and then that build up of emotion in the song and Matt's voice...it definitely mirrors the emotions that do swell when someone you care about has died. It's just an overwhelming surge of emotions. I do agree there is double meaning in the title of Con-Science. The word "conscience" which would imply guilt. Which you feel when someone you care about dies...guilt that if you'd have urged them to go to the dr. sooner, take care of themselves more diligently, etc. It's the "I should have done more" feeling which certainly fits these lyrics. And then the "Con+Science" Maybe Con could mean "against" as in "against science". But it could also mean Con as in "Cheat"? As in the word "Con-Artist". If you could cheat the laws of science...maybe you could cheat death?? I don't know....I'm grasping. But that's what came to my mind.

Muse – Sing for Absolution Lyrics 14 years ago
Also...in light of your New Moon relation to Sing for Absolution.
the lines...

<"there's nowhere left to hide
in no one to confide
the truth burns deep inside
and will never die"
--This could just be his mourning process, and the hopelessness that no matter how he tries to cheer himself up, he will never be able to live without her.>

I think that it would relate to Edward's mourning process. "nowhere left to hide" means there is nowhere he can possibly go to ever escape the pain he's feeling. "in no one to confide" would mean I think that no one...not even his family can possibly understand the pain he's experiencing so he feels so alone with no one to turn to. "the truth burns deep inside and will never die"...is about Edward feeling responsible for her death. No matter how he twists the events around in his mind all the selfless reasons he left her for...he will always blame himself for her death. And even with him taking his own life...doesn't change that it was his fault to his way of thinking.

I know the Anti-Twilight people hates Muse & Twilight in the same sentence...I am a fan of both...but I don't associate one with the other. I respect Matt, Dom & Chris enough to not question what they wish to do with their own damn music and how they make a living off of it. It's not for me or anyone else to judge. But I do think SM took inspiration from several Muse songs. I can relate to that...Muse has inspired many a painting of my own. I was a burned out artist that hadnt painted in over a year...and their music inspired me to paint again. So i understand what their music can do to your soul. It's like nothing I've ever experienced creatively....Radiohead has a similiar effect on me. But Matt is who I dream of at night. LOL

Muse – Sing for Absolution Lyrics 14 years ago
I too thought this exact thing as well almost word for word. Also the Greek myth of Apollo and Daphne came to my mind as well. It, too is similiar with Apollo driving Daphne to extremes and then he feels overwhelming guilt for what he's done when all he wanted to do was love her. But I agree...I think Stephenie Meyer used this for inspiration. I was disappointed that this wasn't used on the NM soundtrack. But oh well.

Muse – Sing for Absolution Lyrics 14 years ago
The best song on the Absolution album in my opinion. I can listen to it endlessly.
When I hear it, it makes me think of the Greek myth of Apollo and Daphne for some reason. Apollo, the Greek god of the sun falls for the nymph Daphne and is desperate to have her. She resists his advances and flees. He chases her, so in love and selfish as gods are in the Greek myths. She calls out to her father, a river god, for help and receives it and is permanently changed into a laurel tree. Apollo is devastated at the lengths she went to in order to remain free. Out of his love and respect, he wore a laurel leaf crown from then on...which is why that is worn by victors of wars and the Olympics. But I always thought of the emotion of Apollo, for some reason when I hear this song...I think because the lyrics have a very poetic classic literature sound to them....and the emotional aspect of enormous guilt....and not only guilt but willingness to do anything to right the wrong but knowing that's impossible. I know the lyrics are in no way about this. But this is what I think of when I hear this beautiful song.

Muse – Easily Lyrics 14 years ago
Such a great song.
I always think of this song as being about a guy that is in love with a girl when she was at her most vulnerable...at her lowest point in her life. And he loved her and nurtured her back from her broken state of mind. And now that she has confidence again and higher self esteem...she wants to leave him. And he wonders if she'll remember him and how important she was to him and all he'd done for her. He wants to make her see that he won't be so easily forgotten...it isn't so easy to move on...she won't find anyone that will love her more, treat her better. And each time another guy fails her...that's when she'll experience regret for losing the guy that truly loved her the most. That's when she'll realize she'll never be able to forget him.

Muse – Falling Away with You Lyrics 14 years ago
One of the most beautiful and powerful Muse songs. It makes me think of my ex husband. We grew up together, best friends..lots of childhood memories building tree houses, learning to ride bikes, etc. We were just best friends in High School...he dated my closest friend. Later she broke up w/him and soon after he & I gave it a go after he said he had feelings for me. Such a mistake. We should have just stayed friends. Our marriage was awful...he was a mean, selfish husband and I was neglected and lonely. It lasted barely over a year. Fast forward almost 20 yrs and I hear this Muse song...it makes me feel everything I felt when he suddenly said he wanted a divorce. Even though my head was saying this was the miracle I'd been waiting for and it was a new start for both of us. My heart was breaking and "my world was falling away"...all the memories of childhood would now be tainted, everything ruined I not only lost a husband...but my best friend too...now when my kids ask about my childhood friends. I have to edit my memories. I ended up marrying a great guy later and been married 19 yrs now while my ex is 41 & divorced 3 times total. I'd always selfishly thought I was the "one that got away". Because I was the one girl that he'd dated that didn't need "fixing" or "saving" But I'd misunderstood that even. It was my friend in HS that he's been pining for all these years...not me. It was a crushing blow. "I can't remember when it was good...moments of happiness elude...maybe I just misunderstood"

One of my top 3 favorite Muse songs ever...B side or no. My interpretation is that it seems to me about guilt for leaving. Two people in love...but it's best they part ways for whatever reason. Perhaps they belong to other people, or the relationship is damaging or their are obstacles too great to overcome or he knows he's just bad/wrong for her. But he's trying to end it but she's not making it easy for him to leave. It's torture for him to do the right thing and leave her....because he really doesn't want to.
The lines in my thinking are:
Chase your dreams away...(Forget all the dreams you had of a future together)
Glass needles in the hay....(I'm leaving and you will never see me again...it's futile to find me)
The sun forgives the clouds....(You are better off. I have only been standing in your way of happiness)
You are my Holy Shroud....(I'm making this sacrifice because you are sacred, above all others)
The whole "you can't resist making me feel eternally missed" makes me think that he's kinda angry that she doesn't see that he's trying to do end the relationship to make her life better...but perhaps her her tears & pleading are what's torturing him the most. But doesn't change that it has to be over.

Radiohead – How to Disappear Completely Lyrics 14 years ago
This is in my top 3 of RH songs. It's so haunting and beautiful. I can be in a mellow or happy mood and this song can instantly fill me with sorrow and loneliness. It's just so powerful. I love the dreamy feel to it. And when Thom sings, "I'm not here...this isn't happening" makes me think of being in a desperate and surreal situation and wanting to believe it's just a bad dream that you can awake from. I love that chaotic sound the string section makes near the end...conveys swirling emotions of panic, fear, and sadness. Like something so tragic happening that you can't wrap your mind around it and you just want to wake up or runaway or disappear to not have to feel the pain. At least that's what the song means to me.

Thom Yorke – Hearing Damage Lyrics 14 years ago
I think the first line actually sounds like
"Tear in my brain"
which makes more sense I think.

Great song.
The phrase "A drunken salesman" is unclear to me yet stood out. Wonder if that means that a drunken salesman might say too much or not be as smooth or as convincing to sell you on something or an idea? They might misread social cues that you are uninterested in their sales pitch? IDK...thoughts?

I think my favorite lines are when Thom sings "They say you're getting better....But you don't feel any better" So true. People sometimes, for lack of what to say to a very ill person, will tell you that you look or seem better...but you may be or at least feel the opposite.

Radiohead – Kinetic Lyrics 14 years ago
This song came to my mind over and over this weekend. My best friend came to stay the weekend with her guy that is totally wrong for her. They already want different things such as marriage vs. living together. He recently moved in with her and I see the signs that she is letting him drive the relationship and make all the major life decisions like marriage/moving to another state, etc...while she just goes with the flow even if she is not sure that's what she wants or dislikes it even. She refuses to at least give an opinion or anything because she fears he'll leave if she puts anything resembling a demand or request. Made me instantly think of the line...

"You're being took for a ride".

Some people tend to just lets things happen TO them instead of making tought choices. Which is what I get from this song. That feeling of moving and change happening to you...but not being in control of it. Just letting yourself get carried along like a passenger in a car...not the driver. Which is what I think that line...

"Don't fall asleep at the wheel"

means. Sometimes your life changes direction because of things/situations out of your control...but sometimes your life changes direction because you give all control to someone else.

Muse – Unnatural Selection Lyrics 14 years ago
I disagree about I Belong To You not being attached to 1984. As the french lyrics are from a Samson and Delilah opera. And that story is very similiar to Winston and Julia's love story in 1984. With both women Delilah and Julia sent to use their feminine charms on Samson/Winston Smith by their "superiors". Both were to find the men's weakness so that they could be annihilated. And they succeeded as the men did fall hopelessly in love with them. But, both women unexpectedly fell in love with them as well...but both Delilah & Julia were too fearful and still betrayed their lovers. I could be wrong, of course. But that's how I interpreted the lyrics. And if it's correct...it does go along with the whole 1984 theme with the adulation, love, deception & betrayal aspect.

Death Cab for Cutie – Meet Me on the Equinox Lyrics 14 years ago
I agree with satellitemind. I too have been a DCFC fan as well as a Twilight fan. And I do think this song will fit in perfectly. I think it has a bittersweet sound.

Meet me on your best behavior
Meet me at your worst
For there will be no stone unturned
Or bubble left to burst
Let me lay beside you darling
Let me be your man
And let our bodies intertwine
But always understand
That everything ends.

I think this is the guy (I guess in this case, Edward...since it's for the movie) saying he's ready for whatever reaction Bella has when he leaves. He will understand if she's angry or not, grief stricken or not...but to make no mistake, his mind is made up that he's leaving forever. "For there will be no stone unturned and no bubble left to burst" really conveys the guy will leave and make sure he will not leave room for her hope of his return/reuniting.As in the book...Edward thought of everything. He secretly took all momentos of pics, the song he made for her...everything. He didnt want her to have anything to cling to. He hoped it would make her forget him. I think the "meet me on the equinox...meet me half way" kinda says to me that he's begging her to agree that it's best that it ends. He wants her to see the wisdom of it.

But that's my take on the lyrics. ALSO...is it me or does the guitar rythym seem similiar to Paramore's Decode guitar melody? For continuity...I kinda like that. Vastly different yet a vague common thread.

Muse – I Belong to You/Mon Coeur S'Ouvre a Ta Voix Lyrics 14 years ago
Ok one last point to make about this song...
The beginning lines..
"When these pillars get pulled down
it will be you who wears the crown
and I'll owe everything to you..."

seems to me another reference to the Samson and Delilah story....

<<<<< Delilah, no doubt would not have been in the temple of Dagon, because the evidence shows that she was a Israelitess, whereas the Bible says only Philistines was killed when Samson brought the temple down.

Samson braced himself against the two supporting pillars and “bent himself with power,” causing the house to collapse. This resulted in his own death and that of more Philistines than he had killed in his entire lifetime.>>>>>>>>>>>

I think the lyrics simply mean that his demise will be due to his trust in her. But yet in the end, she'll get to walk away fairly unscathed. In 1984 there is uncertainty in whether Julia actually betrayed Winston or was a victim herself as well. I think it was meant to be open to interpretation. In my mind, I think Julia was like Delilah, asked to do a task for her people/superiors that each were willing to do in the beginning...use their feminine wiles to trick Samson/Winston and find out the source of their strength...Samson's strength was his hair...Winston's was his free thought/knowing real truth...but somewhere along the way, both Delilah and Julia fell in love with their men. But they still betrayed them... out of fear of doing otherwise. As I think that is why Julia was tortured...for falling in love when she shouldn't.

This is actually my favorite song on The Resistance album. I think it's sexy and the most beautiful song and extremely romantic. I also think I've made the connection between this album and the whole 1984 theme Matt was inspired by. The french "bridge" for lack of a better word is from the Samson et Delila opera made famous by Maria Callas. The french lines are backwards in the lyrics posted above. It should be "Ah, reponds a ma tendresse...Versez moi, versez moi livresse" (forgive any spelling errors) But although he says these lines several times...this is the order of how it's said first as well as in the opera. It means "Respond to my tenderness...pour out to me the drunkeness" The similarity between the Samson and Delila story from the bible as well as the 1984 characters of Winston Smith and his Julia is that the men fell so in love with these women...and although each loved them back...they both ultimately betrayed them for power, glory & fear of authority figures, etc.
I think the song conveys that complete surrender to the ones they love. They may know that they are doomed by this love or possible betrayal...but it doesn't matter, they are powerless against it.They love completely with their whole being. I suppose it could be also represent how we can be seduced by our government and promises they make...but I prefer to think of it on the romantic level.
