AM Taxi – The Mistake Lyrics 15 years ago
FYI, for the time being, 5 ro 6 of AM TAXI's other songs are up on here, but are under the name "AMERICAN TAXI."
The band switched from AMERICAN TAXI to AM TAXI after they were advised that there could be legal issues with
the band GREAT AMERICAN TAXI. I sent an e-mail to the administrator to move those songs over here, but nothing
doing yet.

For the time being, AM TAXI's debute label release "We Don't Stand a Chance" dropped yesterday, and it is very,
very good. I urge all of you to pick it up!

AM Taxi – The Mistake Lyrics 15 years ago
Definitely about a one night stand. This one seems to be just the latest in a string of one night stands for the girl, and the guy claims to be the biggest mistake that she's ever going to make.

This song is actually called "Bonfire," and it's the album version of "Campfire," which was put out on a demo.

Toad the Wet Sprocket – P.S. Lyrics 16 years ago
I think the lyrics are a little off in two spots.

First, in the final prechorus, it should be:

"Don't speak your mind now
'Cause no one cares
No one's there..."

And in the 2nd verse, it should be

"You've no answer but the rise in rent" instead of "Who, what, when and where was she this time."

Between the Buried and Me – Camilla Rhodes Lyrics 16 years ago
iGod is right...the song is loosely based on the character "Camilla Rhodes" from David Lynch's "Mulholland Drive." For anyone who hasn't seen the movie, it's about a girl who moves to Hollywood from Canada to live out the dream of becoming a movie star, but she has a difficult time finding work and only has a few small roles to her credit. She meets a popular movie star named "Camilla Rhodes," who she falls in love with and unintentionally becomes reliant on this girl to get her smaller roles in some of her films. Finally, Camilla announces that she is getting engaged to a man, who is also the director for several movies they have worked together in, and the main character is furious that Camilla is breaking off their "lust" affair. The main character pays a hitman to kill Camilla, but becomes regretful of her decision. She dreams up an elaborate scenario where the hit goes awry and Camilla is left with amnesia, allowing the main character to pursue her once again.

The underlying theme of the movie suggests that "making it in Hollywood is all about who you know, and not how talented you are." I think Girl 1 in this song is supposed to be Camilla, who is making it in the entertainment world for her sex appeal.

Last couple stanzas sound anything like Jim Jones and the Peoples Temple Agricultural Project, from Jones' point of view?

Lucky Boys Confusion – This Town Ain't Big Enough for Both of Us Lyrics 16 years ago
Also, in the last prechorus, Stubby says "I fixed up the 90 today..." rather than "the motor."

I think this song is about a guy who has decided that it's time to escape the town that he's lived in for so long, and he wants to take his girl out with him. It sounds like the town has changed alot from when he was younger, and that there really isn't anything left for him.

Better Than Ezra – Breathless Lyrics 16 years ago
That's a little closed-minded. Sure, you can take it that way, but the word "wars" could also be taken in much deeper context to suggest any internal or external conflict that the person has gone through. The word "wars" is used quite often to describe personal internal conflict.

best song on the new album, in my opinion. very epic-sounding...

AFI – Medicate Lyrics 16 years ago
Well it's definitely about a relationship, but I'm not so sure it's about being drugged...
It sounds to me like their sexual relationship is a drug, they use it to cure a sense of
loneliness because "everyone else has gone away." Maybe it's a case of the singer having
a string of one night stands to feel closer to a human being, only to have the partner leave
the next day and not want to stay.

Part of the dialogue here is taken from Terrence Malik's "The Thin Red Line." Explosions in the Sky uses the same quote.

Agreed. The Thin Red Line is one of the most beautiful movies ever made. I don't think there has ever been a movie with deeper dialogue.

Explosions in the Sky – Have You Passed Through This Night? Lyrics 16 years ago
as sean7711 said above, the lyrics are actually an audio sample taken from Terance Malik's "The Thin Red Line," which is a World War II movie set in the Pacific Theater. The dialogue is actually a soldier questioning war, to himself, asking if the killing of man actually benefits the world in anyway, and finally wonders whether the enemy army (Japanese) ever considered this.

The Airborne Toxic Event – Sometime Around Midnight Lyrics 16 years ago
You can't really infer that based on the lyrics. While it is certainly possible, the only real meaning you can interpret here is that a girl at the bar is a tease and toying with his emotions, going up to him to say hi, making sure that he picks up her scent...only to get him interested enough to notice that she leaves with someone else.

What a b*tch

The Gaslight Anthem – Here's Looking at You, Kid Lyrics 16 years ago
Sounds almost like a suicide note, asking whoever reads this to let the girls mentioned in it how he felt about them, and how they made a mistake not choosing him. The first line of the first two verses, however, is written using phrases such as, "I am," and "I'm drunk," which could imply that when the reader does speak with these girls, he will still be living.

I think he's just saying goodbye to heartbreak and moving on, but wants all of those girls to know that they messed up. The "Casablanca" idea talked about above is dead on, too.

The Gaslight Anthem – The '59 Sound Lyrics 16 years ago
"americanlow" I don't think that's exactly correct, either.

The song is about the death of a close friend. The singer is asking the deceased friend what he heard when he died. Somewhat the same line of thinking as the belief that we see a bright light through a tunnel when we pass, I think the singer is suggesting that there might be audible sensations as well...He is wondering if his friend heard his/her favorite song, if they heard the sound of the church choir singing at the funeral, etc.

The '59 sound is simply a reference to a genre or small collection of music, either from the 1959 timeframe, or music by Holly, Vallens, and Bopper, that brought back great memories of their childhood, when they used to hear that music coming through the radio of their grandparents.

The Gaslight Anthem – The '59 Sound Lyrics 16 years ago
The song isn't about the 3 singers who died... the singer of this song is speaking to his deceased friend, and is asking him, essentially, what did you hear when you died. He asks him if he heard the '59 sound, which is probably referring to the 3 musicians listed above, or at least music from that era.

The Gaslight Anthem – The '59 Sound Lyrics 16 years ago
Hmm... I don't think that's entirely correct. While he may certainly name amp building a hobby, I don't think '59 sound is referring to the sound of a Fender amp. I think it's referring to a particular genre of music from the late 50s (or to be more precise, '59) that, according to the song, the singer and his friend remembered hearing back when they were younger coming from a grandparent's radio.

Rise Against – Savior Lyrics 16 years ago
Just because they aren't saying what you want them to say doesn't make it a bad song. As a fellow musician, I can relate to the fact that you have to write about things that are important to you. Rise Against wrote about anti-establishment and punk and protesting early in their career because it was important to them. They can't just keep writing songs about because YOU want them to...especially if it isn't as important to them anymore. They are all older and more mature, and I'm sure that the lyrics to this song reflect a feeling that is important to THEM in their lives NOW.

Rise Against – Survive Lyrics 16 years ago
I agree with kryptonite to an extent, in that the most important line of the song is "but how we survive is what makes us who we are."

I bought this cd a few days after my ex of 2+ years broke up with me. When I heard this song, I paralleled it with me own life thinking, I can sit here and be upset, and complain, blah blah blah, but digging deep and just getting over it would make me a tougher person who will be able to better hold up to that kind of emotional lashing in the future.

So basically, the way in which you get past a difficult situation is what shapes us for the future.

Rise Against – Like The Angel Lyrics 16 years ago
Hmmm... I have heard from several outlets that this song is written about one of Tim's siblings, possibly a brother, and it has something to do about not seeing him much when he's out on tour.

After reading the lyrics here, I don't see it as much, save maybe the last verse. The whole "your eyes they penetrate me," sounds a bit more like love or lust or something to that extent, so I have a hard time seeing the sibling angle.

Great song...Wish I had the slightest clue of what it all means.

"maybe this road we're on

maybe it's the highway
to the very place that might just save us"

What a great line...

Seven Mary Three – Last Kiss Lyrics 16 years ago
It's too bad that no one really has commented on the songs off of Day/Night Driving. Jason Ross is a craftsman when it comes to writing insightful lyrics, something that I don't think was apparent on the mainstream 7M3 stuff like American Standard. It's too bad that the band fell out of favor with the public just when his writing started to take off.

As for this song, I can related very well. I think it's about a relationship where the guy was just going through the motions and the girl made every effort possible to try and keep the relationship going. Finally, the relationship ended and the guy finally realizes that he made a big mistake and probably was hurting the girl in the process. He realizes that there is no going back now, but he admits that he can still be there for the girl if she ever needs him.

Seven Mary Three – Over Your Shoulder Lyrics 16 years ago
Yeah, this song is incredible, and probably carries one of the strongest and most thoughful messages that I have ever seen in a song. Firstly, I'd say the other comments are pretty accurate. I wouldn't necessarily say that the song is referring to suicide. I think it's simple reassurance that when the going gets tough, and it doesn't seem like there is an end in sight, to just relax and remember that pretty soon, it will all be behind you.

I also really love the line, "You can't look straight ahead, to see what's in front of you." Alot of times, when you are going through a difficult time, you tend to want to see the light at the end of the tunnel immediately, for reassurance that you are going to be out of this mess, but the song lets you know that it's not always that easy, and sometimes, you just have to let life run its course and have faith that everything is going to work out.

Tokyo Rose – A Pound Of Silver Is Worth It's Weight In Blood Lyrics 16 years ago
I think the singer is referring to a situation where both parties like each other, but the guy has a history or a particular quality (his demons) about him that he fears will ultimately hurt the girl in the end. It's like he's explaining to her that he's been down this road before, and he doesn't want to watch someone who he really cares about have to deal with him and all of his problems. Then he assures her that if she can get past the initial problems with him, that everything will work out ("because given time, you'll grow to love me.").

Joseph Arthur – In The Sun Lyrics 16 years ago
To the comment above re: Chris Martin saying, "This is the greatest song ever written," he is definitely referring to this, and not "Night Swimming." This song become a universal relief project, founded by Michael Stipe and Chris Martin, with the authorization from Joseph Arthur. The 3 of them, as well as Justin Timberlake and Timbaland (I believe) created a CD with 7 or 8 interpretations of this song, and all sales went to some sort of relief effort. In Chris and Michael's live version, Chris makes that comment, which certainly would not have been included if he were actually referring to Nightswimming, which has no relative meaning for this album.

In terms of meaning, I think it's pretty simple, although the lyrics are vague enough to allow for personalized interpretation, which is always great. I'd say it's post-breakup, and the guy broke up with the girl, but harbors no ill-will toward her. And he is partly consoling her because he still cares about her, and wants her to know that she was responsible for a number of great things that happened in his life and changed him for the better, and partly explaining that he is in a complicated place in his life where he is looking for answers for himself and doesn't want to drag her down with him because he can't commit at this time. In summation, I think it's like an appology, mixed with a thank-you for everything and a pep-talk to stay strong and not to worry, because she'll be okay.

(+44) – Make You Smile Lyrics 16 years ago
Hmmm... I think FrozenPhoenix may be on to it. Maybe not about a relationship, but certainly about the possibility of one. Sounds like the guy very much wants to be in a relationship with the girl, but she is either not interested and doesn't want to break his heart by shooting him down, or she is not sure what she wants and is avoiding the thought of having to discuss the complicated situation with him, so she makes excuses for the times it "appears" she is avoiding him.

Sparta – Breaking The Broken Lyrics 16 years ago
I really don't see the need to compare ATDi, Sparta and Mars Volta. Sparta and Mars Volta are entirely different styles of music, and I think that's part of the reason why ATDi went on hiatus and disbanded to begin with. Omar and Cedric wanted to explore more of a progressive, experimental side of rock, while Jim and the others wanted to attack the mainstream a bit more.

Personally, I am not that big a fan of Mars Volta, but I know alot of people that are, and if longevity is any sign of how good a band is, it looks like Mars Volta takes the cake on that one as well, considering Sparta is sadly no more.
