Opeth – Windowpane Lyrics 9 months ago
Child Abuse - multiple victims in the home. Inside there's a lullaby (he sings a lullaby in his head to drown out the other children's cries and to get to sleep to escape the abuse). He's not sure if he's the next victim. When it's his turn is it real or only a dream?

Anathema – The Storm Before The Calm Lyrics 10 months ago
The song, on a personal level, describes the process of my first step of my life journey of moving towards spiritual enlightenment and what transpired after my first true meditation. Although, after the session, being in tune with the universe (Calm - as described in the later song Internal Landscapes) but not allowing the release from the conscious mind (Storm) - as of yet. Questioning the validity of the experience and the existence. A very HUMAN song.

Candlebox – Happy Pills Lyrics 4 years ago
Definitely a song of the times these days and a FUCKING AMAZING one I might add! Unfortunately some take too many happy pills leading to a oath of destruction and demise - sort of the underlying meaning of the song. The reality is, we don’t need these pills to face what we fear because, ultimately, if we choose to rely on then, versus facing our fears head on, we will still be the same,if not a worse, condition once we stop taking them. A very underrated song by a very underrated band!

Anathema – Ariel Lyrics 4 years ago
The song reminds me of the way I feel in regard to my children (staring at the sun, love so strong it hurts - look into your eyes, see my life defined/see your heart in mine). In that perspective, it appears that the child she gave birth to saved her (them).

Security under pressure... People don’t realize until it’s too late that “having a job” versus living out their life’s purpose (dream) costs much more than the secure job provides - both financially and, more important, emotionally. Live your dream - NEVER have a plan B!!

Riverside – Left Out Lyrics 7 years ago
One of the best songs ever recorded. Riverside you, by far, are the most under rated band in the progressive genre. Left out. Knowing you have what it takes to make an impact - the ability of making the person who believed in you whole. The dream went away. I know I'm worth more...

Progressive musicianship - the buildup of this song is unmatched. Damn it's a shame the world lost Piotr.

Left out is Riverside

The lyric "I noticed my reflection in the waves and I saw ypu looking back at me" - when petrucci wrote this he looked very much like Jesus. I think this lyric is a reference to Jesus.

Riverside – Egoist Hedonist Lyrics 13 years ago
Have you ever felt the relief (really euphoria) of being an individual? Of following your own commands and acting and appearing the way you feel like acting or appearing? What's so sad is that this feeling is hardly felt by any of us. We are usually so caught up in decision making with the expectations of outside influences in mind that we miss out on the very lives and the limited hours that we possess to enjoy it. John Lennon said it best when he wrote "ife is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans."

I really love Riverside. They are tremendous. Coming from a non-mainstrean country it's even more incredible that I am fortunate enough to be exposed to their brilliance. This song is a perfect example of how brilliant they really are - progressive intelligence with major talent!!

Lyrically fantastic and musically talented. Thank you Riverside - keep on going - you are slowly and steadily taking over the progressive world!!

Oh, by the way, this song, in my opinion, is a very excellent attempt in making you realize that this is "your" life - so enjoy it!!

Porcupine Tree – Half-Light Lyrics 14 years ago
This person, either mother or son (I am not familiar with the Deadwing screenplay), is dead. He/she has been hanging around in the "half light" (between "the light" or, as some people say Heaven, and life on Earth) and is ready to make the full step into the light. But before doing so, he/she is contacting the other to say goodbye and to remember me this way.

Quite beautiful, moving and definitely on of PT's best!

Steven definitely needs to have some childreen. He would look at life so differently through "their" eyes. I feel my middle aged life would be quite sad without my children.

Oh, and yes, Time definitely Flies.

Porcupine Tree – I Drive the Hearse Lyrics 14 years ago
The coat in the opening verse could be the same coat in "Time Flies" and, as stated in Time Flies how "The Coat You Wore to Alton Towers is still the way I see you now" - young, beautiful, optimistic. Now the coat is stained with life and we are all "driving our own hearses" because we may as well be dead if we are not enjoying the one and only life we have here on Earth.

Creed – A Thousand Faces Lyrics 14 years ago
Thousand faces is his reflection plastered all over the floor. That person in the mirror has been haunted him for years and has stopped him from becoming all that he can be. It's time to step ahead and the only way to do that is to stop looking back. New mirror - new reflection. Great Tune!

Dream Theater – Lines in the Sand Lyrics 14 years ago
My favorite Dream Theater song. I interpret this song as being about how people stop LIVING and start making excuses (or blame, complain, whine, etc.) for their own inadequacies or the mediocre lives (even though they know that they can be so much more - they settle for an existence they loathe), hence, DEAD, in all senses of the word, except physically (numb awareness - final psalm).

"Living comes much easier once we admit we're dying" is the highlight sentence of the song. My interpretation of that line is that while we are healthy and truly able to LIVE our lives, we complain and curse about it. When illness strikes or fatalities occur or death creeps up on us, we realize that "any" life is a good thing and we realize that the "hard" life we WERE living while healthy was much "easier" than we thought.

Thoreau's "quiet desperation" comes to mind when I listen to this song.

I think John Petrucci was suffering immensely from the loss of his father when he penned these lyrics. There is soooooo much emotion in this song both lyrically and musically. I still get goosebumps, even after a thousand listens, when I hear the solo in this song. I think that, while he was playing this solo, he had his father in mind and, listening to it in that frame of reference, really brings out the emotional element in it.

Truly a beautiful creation and, in my opinion, Dream Theater's finest. Remember - Don't get swept away with the tide!!

Twenty Century Icon Bleeding (The Televison). Can I "turn on" my religion?

I believe a lot of this song, metaphorically, eludes to the damage television and TV personalities have done to us, individually, and to all of society.

"Love, Just Don't Stare"

Dream Theater – I Walk Beside You Lyrics 14 years ago
I'm not religious but this song definitely is. "Let me the one who knows you best" , "Don't abandon me or think you can't be SAVED", etc. are directly references to "findig Christ" and becoming born again (Saved).

In order for Mike Portnoy to become sober he went through the AA Program which is highly religious. John Petrucci, a catholic (Voices is religious also) wrote the lyrics.

Hatchet, Axe and Saw is a play on economic terms. These terms are Bracket, Tax and Law which are used to penalize the income earner so that the "maples" can feel justified (i.e., live off the oaks).

Porcupine Tree – Collapse The Light Into Earth Lyrics 14 years ago
Sunset = End (metaphor) either for a relationship or suicide. I won't shiver in the cold (no more sun). I won't let the shadows take their toll (long shadows as the sun sets). I won't cover head in the dark (no more sun). I won't forget you when we part (no more sun or ie. happiness, life, love).

Collapse the light in the Earth = Sunset

I won't heal given time (broken heart, depression or, ultimately - you can't heal if you're dead). I won't try to change your mind (someone leaving, suicidal thoughts). I won't feel better in the cold light of day (huge verse packed with meaning - what he is saying is even if the good times were to continue, or if the person stays, or his depression is suppressed (light of day = sunshine) he still won't feel better (it's too late)). But I wouldn't stop you if you wanted to stay (relationship continuing or not killing himself).

Ultimately, I think this song is about contemplating suicide. It is a genuine extension of the song Prodigal (a song about depression/suicide) of the same CD. In fact, listen to this song after Prodigal and you will see what I mean.

More thoughts - Turn the water into wine (turn your tears into hope). The following verse "I drown in hesitation, my words come crashing down And all my best creations, burn into the ground The thought of starting over, leaves me paralyzed Tear it out again, another one that got away" sustantiates my thoughts on the above meaning.

Dream Theater – Wither Lyrics 15 years ago
John Petrucci, at least mostly in the past, has written using disguised meanings that allows the listener to put his or her own meaning to the songs he writes. Using this idea of his writing style, I feel that this song is about losing your "zest" for life. Being an avid goal setter my entire life and entering into my mid 40's, I have been creating my world my entire life by living my "reflections on the page" or, in other words, my written down goals. This song can easily be identified with writer's block but, in my case, being the victim of the current economic downturn and losing everything I created in my business, I relate to this song as "starting over" and Petrucci is telling me to "let it out" and get passionate about something again. -- Just my thoughts :)
