Wither Lyrics
Let it out, let it out
Feel the empty Space
So insecure find the words and let it out
Staring down, staring down
Nothing comes to mind
Find the place turn the water into wine
But I feel I'm getting nowhere
And I'll never see the end
So I wither
And render myself helpless
I give in and everything is clear
I breakdown
And let the story guide me
Turn it on
Turn it on
Let the feelings flow
Close your eyes
See the ones you used to know
Open up open up
Don't struggle to relate
Lure it out
Help the memory escape
Still this barrenness consumes me
And I feel like giving up
So I wither
And render myself helpless
I give in
And everything is clear
I breakdown
And let the story guide me
I wither
And give myself away
Light reflections on the cage
The worlds want to create
I drown in hesitation
My words come crashing down
And all my best creations
Burning to the ground
The thought of staring over
Leaves me paralyzed
Tear it out again
Another one that got away
I wither
And render myself helpless
I give in
And everything is clear
I wither
And render myself helpless
I give in
And everything is clear
I breakdown
And let the story guide me
I wither
And give myself away
Light reflections on the cage
The worlds want to create
The worlds which you create
Let it out let it out
Feel the empty Space

John Petrucci, at least mostly in the past, has written using disguised meanings that allows the listener to put his or her own meaning to the songs he writes. Using this idea of his writing style, I feel that this song is about losing your "zest" for life. Being an avid goal setter my entire life and entering into my mid 40's, I have been creating my world my entire life by living my "reflections on the page" or, in other words, my written down goals. This song can easily be identified with writer's block but, in my case, being the victim of the current economic downturn and losing everything I created in my business, I relate to this song as "starting over" and Petrucci is telling me to "let it out" and get passionate about something again. -- Just my thoughts :)
@DTFANIAM I've gotta tell you man: your comments touched me (also in my mid 40's) and I agree with you that this song is about that very thing of having to start over from near the bottom or reckoning with a life that did not turn out as once planned (and perhaps planned near the top of once achievements, it hurts more).

Sir, I can tell you one thing: As we get older we become greater philosophers. Our context and life experiences add up to more than anything else. Therefore, there is no reason to let down anyone...

Yet another interpretation.
It could represent a person once powerful, someone with a voice, a message, and a purpose in life. Be it a career, a business, a family or some other venture, by some twist of fate or stroke of bad luck, that purpose, joy, or expression was lost. Watching all you've achieved in your lifetime be taken from you, leaving a gaping void, a wasteland where your life once was - it's painful. For a person who's used to success, who's used to easily filling up that empty page, trying to rediscover the power of positive thinking and the ability to move forward after such devastation can be terrifying. Starting over, finding passion again, turning "water into wine" as you once did... it's not easy to get back up after being knocked down like that. Withering away from the world isn't the answer, but for a time, it is an option while one's heart and soul heals after being ripped away.
The world is what you create. You can wither away, or accept the loss and find a way to fill that empty space.
Well, to clarify, the album is all based on specific events from the life of the writer. Everything here is based on personal experience.
However, having said that, I do agree that this song could be used as a metaphor in many different ways. But to be straightforward, it is written with writer's block as a topic. Take from it what you will...
I have my own meaning for it about a friendship with a fine female fellow that had suffered a tremendous injury... but after a lot of listening to this album, i got motivated to patch that shit up!
For me it was more about just straight up apologizing and how many times i'd tried before. But this song inspired a heart felt apology that was completely different from the others.
Explain "A Rite of Passage" with that analogy, please.

with which analogy? A rite of passage is about freemasonry, not based on experience but, the other 5 are.

"worlds" or "words"? Given the subject of the song (writer's block), I'm leaning towards "words".
Any thoughts before I correct this?
I believe it's "The world's what you create".

That makes even less sense context-wise. Hmpf.

I'm not so sure... this writer who seems to be having trouble getting their thoughts out onto the page seems to be in some despair... a blank page has left them with a blank life, and they seem to live through their words. So really, the world is what they create for themselves, what they write and the inspiration for which they write.

Hypothetically speaking, a writer creates "worlds", using words, they usually don't create the words they're using ;)

While the song has some modern-rock tendencies, it feels a little more vague than the obvious U2/Coldplay influences that "I Walk Beside You" suffered from.
Regardless, I enjoy it as much as IWBY, if not more so! It's very melodic and as a short ballad, it works well, especially in the context of the album, lyrically and musically.

More thoughts - Turn the water into wine (turn your tears into hope). The following verse "I drown in hesitation, my words come crashing down And all my best creations, burn into the ground The thought of starting over, leaves me paralyzed Tear it out again, another one that got away" sustantiates my thoughts on the above meaning.
i agree with dtfamiam theres no way jo would write a song solely about writers block theres definatley some subtle meanings and metphors about inspiration in all senses of the word imo
Ugh, I meant to include the fact that the apology was actually a letter which is why i didn't explain what i thought any of the metaphors were... it was pretty close to writers block mixed with sucking it up and apologizing haha
dtfaniam has it right. A lot of artists are intentionally just vague enough to where there can be many interpretations of a work (see: all of art, ever).
My personal take? This is about trauma. I'm a councilor, and this song seems to me to be about someone telling a secret of theirs or just something that's difficult to say.
