I discovered this song during the 80's when my sister worked in a hospital. She had occasion to visit the hospital morgue (in the basement) and told me a few strange, sad tales. For some reason, I got those tales of the morgue associated with this song and every time I hear it, I think "morgue". Sort of a good morgue song, if you must have one... I'm sure, one day, when I'm laying in a morgue, I'll have this song stuck in my head. |

Phil Collins is a genius...a guy's kind of guy who can tell the way WE feel when a relationship ends. I will say, though, as SAD SAD SAD as this song is, the line "And if you coming back to me is against all odds, it's the chance I've gotta take" does hold out hope...even against all odds, he's going to hold on and take the only chance there is.
Right now, there is a woman named Mary who could sing this to me, but she gambled with my love and lost. In some cases, that hope against all odds actually is in vain. |

This is my favorite song in the world. I love the part near the end where the piano plays just a few notes and then pauses as she sings "ta-do-da, ta-do-da." There's just something about that little piano segment that gives me goose bumps. Anyone else agree? |

I agree with Erik--it DOES sound like it's about a funeral. After reading the band's explanation that it is about an evening football game, I think it SHOULD have been about a funeral. It is so haunting and so lonely--perfect for a funeral. Maybe it's just me, but football doesn't usually make me feel that way. |
