| I can see how people would say it is about an interracial relationship, but I think the song is more simple than that. I feel like its just about a guy trying to win the approval of his girl's dad and "do the right thing" by asking for the father's blessing. But he keeps rejecting him, so eventually he says I am sorry to do this but I have tried for too long to win you over; I am going to marry her anyway even if you don't change your opinion because I love her. I think the interracial belief or whatever other "problem" the boyfriend could have just adds depth to the concept to allow the listener to make it more relatable. The music and everything is almost light-hearted to show young love and the father is the antagonist who thinks in terms other than carefree love. | |

I feel like this song is both about a vampire and love, so I guess I will explain what i feel like it means both ways and then sum it up at the end... but at the same time, I dont necessarily think this is exactly what the song is about, just what I would like it to be about because it means more to me that way haha. To me this song is quite literally about abortion and suicide. In the first part the singer is guilty about convincing his girl to get an abortion, becuase he was young and didn't want to start a family (the whole part about stopping a baby's breath and rice(a wedding). The sond part is about his friend and how his girl committed suicide, and now that she's gone he realizes how much he loved her. The whole part about trying to forget her and now he weeps for he, which he never did before. The whole thing is basically about being a kid and becoming an adult, and feeling guilty about not wanting to grow up before. Teens/young adults (freshmen) are generally selfish, ignorant and immature. Adults are not, and thus now being adults they regret. They always said it was not their fault, but now they realize it was, they were just young and stupid. |

This song really speaks to me now, It reminds me of me and my ex and how I was so into her, but she ended up being nothing like I imagined, and I loved her, so I tried to help her out. The song Self Esteem, used to describe our official break up, but now its like I broke up with her a second time... so this is what the song means to me... Well to me... The first part of the song means he does not live a life of individuality and free thought. He has to focus to "kill the little boy" - children are ignorant, selfish, and lack reasons for doing things, they just do them. However, it's hard to do things for the sake of doing and "violating the trust" of those who expect certain things out of you. You have to know why you are doing it, know it's best and know it's not easy. Therefore, he is "burning alive" He is meaningless because he doesn't live the way he wants to, he does what other people do. He sees this and how people "opperate on jealosy and lust." They do things for themselves. He then whishes he didn't see this because it's easy to be ignorant and not have to think for yourself. However, because he knows, he is forced to change. Again, change is hard. Now he's "burning alive" i.e suffering, just like everyone else who tries oppose the masses. Essentially, change is not easy. It takes time and suffering to be yourself. |
