Rude Lyrics

Saturday morning, jumped out of bed and put on my best suit
Got in my car and raced like a jet all the way to you
Knocked on your door with heart in my hand
To ask you a question
Because I know that you're an old-fashioned man, yeah yeah

Can I have your daughter for the rest of my life?
(Say yes, say yes)
Because I need to know
You say I'll never get your blessings until the day I die
"Tough luck, my friend, but the answer is no!"

Why you gotta be so rude?
Don't you know I'm human too
Why you gotta be so rude
I'm gonna marry her anyway
Marry that girl
Marry her anyway
Marry that girl
Yeah, no matter what you say
Marry that girl
And we'll be a family

Why you gotta be so rude

I hate to do this, you leave no choice
I can't live without her
Love me or hate me, we will be both
Standing at that altar
Or we will run away
To another galaxy, you know
You know she's in love with me
She will go anywhere I go

Can I have your daughter for the rest of my life?
(Say yes, say yes)
Because I need to know
You say I'll never get your blessings until the day I die
"Tough luck, my friend, because the answer's still no!"

Why you gotta be so rude?
Don't you know I'm human too
Why you gotta be so rude
I'm gonna marry her anyway
Marry that girl
Marry her anyway
Marry that girl
Yeah, no matter what you say
Marry that girl
And we'll be a family

Why you gotta be so rude?

Can I have your daughter for the rest of my life?
(Say yes, say yes)
Because I need to know
You say I'll never get your blessing until the day I die
"Tough luck, my friend, but no still means no!"

Why you gotta be so rude?
Don't you know I'm human too
Why you gotta be so rude
I'm gonna marry her anyway
Marry that girl
Marry her anyway
Marry that girl
Yeah, no matter what you say
Marry that girl
And we'll be a family

An interesting, light-hearted song with a playful melody. I love the way it is delivered. The guy seems to be whining because the woman of his dream's father couldn't give them his blessing.

Maybe it would help if he could show her dad that he is dependable. Haha..

Maybe he should make a pass at his fiances mother. That would probably help getting the dad to like him .

@LYNN_K The Person isn't whining, more like Bitching. The lyrics tell you he is not even as upset about the fact that the father said no, as much as he is that the father was rude. The person was kind enough to do things the fathers way, yet the father couldn't have let him down nicely with consideration for his feelings.

I think our so called protagonist in this song is not so innocent as he claims. It is a ruse. He is trying to play somewhat of a victim card. His insistence that he is going to marry the guys daughter anyway is a somewhat subtle threat of the girls father. He is trying to be diplomatic as he can . If all else fails and the dad still behave in a " Rude" manner to this not so innocent young man, the young man is going to behave very violent to his GF's dad. It could get very ugly.

Raggae is usually associated with 'black culture', so when I first heard this on the radio I thought it could be about the difficulty that some caucasion people face with trying to accept interracial marriage, and that might be the particular problem that the young male speaker is facing. For a band who labels themselves as pop rock, the raggae sound is sure an interesting choice! Awesome music and lyrics though! Anyone who got offended, I just want to let you know that using the word 'black' is not racist, and nor is using the word 'white', or speaking of racial differences in appearance and culture.

My Interpretation

According to ToddInTheShadows, in the UK, white Reggae is called "Cod Reggae."

Kinda sad that you need to specify that saying black isnt racist

@iheartthiswebsite Ive found this an interesting comment because it does sound like it, seems like its a struggle for a lot of women to get thier father's blessing especially if they are protective. Nigger is a more offensive word because its suppose to be an insult while just calling them black its just referring to their dark skin colour, but yes, i do see why white men struggle to accept a black man into their family because of sterotypes and the past.

Well this songs pretty self explanatory! He is asking his girlfriends father for a blessing to marry his daughter. The father says no but he will still marry her anyway. It's nice to hear some reggae-ish music on the radio now ;)

This song is about a man (in this case, its Nasri Atweh) who wants to marry his girlfriend. He asks her father for his blessing, and he tells him no. The man even asks again, hoping the father would say yes. But, he says no once again. The man says, "I'm gonna marry that girl, marry her anyway" meaning that he doesn't care what they father says, he is still going to marry her because his love for his girlfriend is so strong.

I agree with iheartthiswebsite's interpretation; it is a black man who absolutely adores and cherishes his white girlfriend, who feels the same. She loves him and will do anything for him, and the man shows the same devotion. However, the girl's father is biased to not approve of a black man marrying a white woman. By "old-fashioned man", I'm assuming that the girl's father is more inclined to think that colored people are less than white people, a common belief in America's past and even here today in the present. The part which triggers the interracial couple idea the most for me is when he sings, "Don't you know I'm human, too?" Well... I don't see any other reason why the lyrics would mention it. The father thinks of him as lesser being due to his skin color (maybe alluding to the Three-Fifths Compromise, stating that one black person makes up 3/5 of a person to determine the number of representatives in Congress).

I'm not saying that this man IS ONLY AND CAN ONLY BE black, and the girl white. Thats

Ugh. This is frustrating! Heard this song many times, but never tried to figure out the words until today when I decided to play it on my guitar. The words are: “we will be BOTH, standing at that alter”! It took me one listen to figure it put after looking up every lyric page...
