my interpretation is probably 95% personal experience and 5% english misunderstanding, but i've always felt this song was about suicide, as in his *friend* committed suicide and he's left dealing with it. dealing with the sense of guilt for not having been able to read the hints properly and to stop him. the suicide idea starts from the very beginning "broken his vision of the future" gives the idea of someone who kinda lost hope about life and feels free to "play" with it, so it comes the major point "testing his body Tempting disaster Testing water" with the suicide being related to drowning. "carry no weight let the weight carry you" also sounds like a -leave all the burdens and just let yourself by carried away lightly- by water, in this case "helpless without helping Healed without scab or scar New union found him alone" also give the idea of someone hurt that may look kinda fine but is still devastated inside. the rest could be the singer telling how he couldn't help at all, he was not really listening and looking at the hints "my ear is bending I'm not helping I'm not telling I'm not solving" and even if he saw something "I’m not saying you’re pretending" it was not considered a big deal "Alone alone alone Not alone at all" as in -the feeling of being lost and alone you feel i can understand and i believe you really perceive it like that but if you look around you are not really alone- the last (and my most favorite part) "If you've got no kind words to say You should say nothing more at all" could be either addressed as third people who only managed to make the situation worse by talking nonsense and demoraling the *friend* even more or as a form of consolation that the singer is telling to himself, -if you couldn't say anything good and helpful, then you just did good just shutting up, don't feel bad for not talking as you did the best thing- sorry for the flooding, i just got this song back in mp3 player this morning after a while and i needed to share my view on it |

i actually see this as if someone died, but she says it's only the body that's dead, so it's not really a "big deal", it's only a box, not really something u possess or control (first 2 lines, that i hear as "Look down on the body, that you have grown FOR mountains stand around you, they're not your own") ; the soul is what matters, and it is not dead, but because of her and her words is gonna reborn better even if not "alive", in a conventional way don't know if i got it right or not, but anyway i adore this song, especially first 2 lines :) |

i couldn't find the lyric around, so i had to write it while listening, not sure if it's ok especially the "put my eye" and "chute down" parts, if someone has better ideas... about the meaning...pretty self-explaining lyric. nice tune though |

well my interpretation (probably only because of my own experience): he was living his own life, he was ok (maybe not "happy", but still ok) with no big problems or worries, so he could sleep. then he met someone (friends, girls, whoever) who messed up his life, leaving him probably alone again, but with the feeling that there's still some kind of presence that haunts him, not letting him sleep, and he wonders if this presence is because of the one he met yeah, i know it's far away from real meaning, but that's what i feel, and probably the aim of the song was to let anyone "fit" the song to their life. amazing song, by the way. |
