Sufjan Stevens – Christmas Woman Lyrics | 11 years ago |
I'm not sure how accurate the lyrics are because I don't have a lyric booklet. Feel free to correct! |
Little Comets – Worry Lyrics | 11 years ago |
I first heard about this band through a friend I met on the internet. She went on tour with them as their official photographer, and I came across her photos on an art website. Here I was in high school, anxious to get out in the world, so I started making pen pals. Finding interesting people and bands from across the waters was a tremendous escape. It's a shame I didn't keep in contact with the photographer. However, I still listen to Little Comets. It's so wonderful to hear them some six years later, and to see that they've really grown as musicians, singers, and songwriters. If I ever visit the UK, they're definitely on my list. |
Josh Garrels – Ulysses Lyrics | 11 years ago |
It's a song about the Christian journey It's a song about the Odyssey It's a love song It's all of these things, because music can have multiple meanings like that. God put a little bit of the story of eternity in the story of a love between two people so we can understand His heart toward us. Josh captures that aspect nicely. Wonderful, isn't it? |
Josh Garrels – Farther Along Lyrics | 11 years ago |
I've never heard a song that has as much truth and honesty about the Christian journey as this one. It's not a safe and easy road, but it's worth it far beyond what we can presently imagine. |
Pas Neos – Nor Do I Condemn You Lyrics | 11 years ago |
Just those first three lines are very sobering: there's nothing we can do that God doesn't see, but He also understands us--our motivations, our struggles--more deeply than we ever could. God is always pursuing us; and when we go astray, He longs even more for us to come home. This song, like many other Pas Neos songs, is a series of vignettes from the Bible on a subject. This one is a perfect example of redemption and forgiveness. |
Listener – You Were A House On Fire Lyrics | 11 years ago |
It sounds like the person he's talking to is very self-destructive and maybe even suicidal. He listens to him (or her) "pour out his hate in [his] hands" and tries to encourage them. Ultimately they have (or had) the same opinions on life and probably even the same habits of drug abuse, so he cannot be of much help, if for no other reason than he feels like a hypocrite. It's possible that despite having the same opinions, they have different outlooks on life (in the big picture) "we all write songs abut life, we just sing them different", which would explain why the speaker doesn't understand why this person is dying inside. This is the scenario I imagine: Both believe that life is meaningless, but the one has hope in Christ and the other doesn't. The speaker wants to share his faith, but doesn't know how because he's not very confidently rooted in his faith. He probably professes as a Christian, but does not follow Christ with his life and doesn't know much about his own faith. The last line implies that the death of this person shook him; talking to them intoxicated him with doubt and reopened the wounds of his past. He's hoping reflection on this person's death will wake him up from his own destructiveness. |
Miike Snow – Silvia Lyrics | 12 years ago |
In context: "If it doesn't return, it never was [free] and wants to be." It's not real love if you don't have a choice in the matter. But enough with that red herring... back to the song! |
Relient K – From End to End Lyrics | 12 years ago |
It could definitely be both. Many of the songs Matt writes are directed at his ex-girlfriend who lost sight of her faith for a chance at stardom. While it could be directed at a friend, the lyrics definitely point to a strong attachment in the relationship--they talk about this issue often, and cannot avoid one another or ignore their love even if this causes a riff in their friendship. After all, the Christian faith is all about relationships with the trinity and with other people. The two are inseparable--two faces of the same coin, so if you write a song about your faith that uses real issues and real emotions, you're going to get the purely relational side of it too. |
Five Iron Frenzy – Fahrenheit Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Part of that too is that kids think about things in a simple way when they are young, they don't know what sexuality is and if they like a song, they'll sing along even if they don't know what it means. But when they get older (adolescence) they start to care what other people think, associating with what is accepted by our peers, parents and other influences and disassociating from anything deemed uncool or shameful by those they look to for approval. If their peers or parents condemn homosexuality, chances they will too; and if they fail to challenge such beliefs this thought pattern will continue until they mature enough to understand what motivates their prejudices and whether their feelings are justified (and for some adults, sadly, they never get there, hence why homophobia is still a problem). It's the same way as for understanding your relationship with Christ. Baby Christians can tell you that Jesus died for your sins because he loves you, but they won't fully know the implications of their faith and how it spiritual warfare permeates every moment of their waking lives unless they develop their spiritual maturity. Many stay in that state of spiritual immaturity and thus ascribe to whatever overriding beliefs about the world they have been told by peers. As far as I've seen the issue of homophobia and homosexuality is just another weapon of the enemy to divide us and keep our mind off bigger issues. Every time I talk to God about it, He says to simply be loving; it's His job to change hearts, not mine. |
Listener – Seatbelt Hands Lyrics | 12 years ago |
What a heart-wrenching song! The girl he talks about has suffered a lot of abuse and now sells her body for money. The line "I wanna cut open my chest and let her in, but that won't fix what needs to mend" is very telling. No one is a proper savior except, well, Jesus. And whether you believe in Him or not, the other truth in this song is that it takes the will of the person needing saving to be saved, and the heart of the savior to be unconditionally loving through the healing process. |
mewithoutYou – Disaster Tourism Lyrics | 12 years ago |
"Disaster tourism is the act of traveling to a disaster area as a matter of curiosity. The behavior can be a nuisance if it hinders rescue, relief, and recovery operations." He's clearly talking about Amsterdam's red light district, but referring to it as a disaster area ravaged by lustful human passions and brokenness. Compare that to somewhere ravaged by hurricane--it's something external that people are quick to address, but Amsterdam is wrapped up in so many problems that are profitable to different people who would take advantage of others. No one goes there to bring relief necessarily. Aaron was probably moved with compassion for the women, and felt a sense of responsibility to be a light of God's love in that area, even if it was just him who felt that way. "I'm on the sad side of a nowhere town\but sister I'm all you got, so call me outside." |
mewithoutYou – My Exit, Unfair Lyrics | 12 years ago |
My exit, unobserved--my homesickness, absurd, I said "Water," expecting a word would satisfy my thirst. Talking all about the second and third, When I haven't understood the first. Jonah, where's that boat going-- Your ship set with eager sails? There's a swirling storm soon blowing, And no use, fishermen, in rowing from the consecrated whale! Just like the clouds bring a darkness and a hard rain's gonna fall, I felt the crowds bring a loneliness and a hard rain's gonna fall. She always weighed me down, But afraid I might need her, I dragged her around. It's best to keep close sackcloth and ash in a whitewashed town. She wore that phony smile on her face, I guess like a bandage on a wounded place, While I kept the keys to every old lock just in case. Rehearsed indifference tossed aside Our narrow arms spread wide, "What unseen pen etched eternal things on the hearts of humankind - But never let them in our minds?" Oh, the clouds bring a darkness and a hard rain's gonna fall, And all my laughter ends in emptiness and a hard rain's gonna fall, My every medicine causes more illness and a hard rain's gonna fall. But until I let you go I didn't know. You, were never mine, you were never mine at all! Now I spend my days in ever-increasingly complicated ways, Convincing myself of the rightness of each word I say. My exit, unfair if unobserved! Ya sabur subhannallahi a'udhu billahi minash-shaitanir-rajim. Al-hamdu lilllah. Bismillahir rahmanir rahim. |
Juanes – La Unica Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I love you, I do not want anyone else Because you're the one that makes me sigh The lady of my love and my heart The only one I want with wild passion (The one) That awakens my reason That sails through the sea of my desires and my dreams That haunts me with thier scent Which leads me through the streets and shows me the stars The irreplaceable, the indispensable The incomparable, unforgettable you And look and see that my eyes love you more And look and see that I tell the truth I am for you and you are to me The lady of my love and my heart (The one) That awakens my reason Which becomes my prayer That sails through the sea of my desires and my dreams Who wears a suit of beautiful poetry That haunts me with its scent Which brings me to the end Which leads me through the streets and shows me the stars Which mixes with my blood and is part of my life |

Juanes – Luna Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Juanes was the favorite band of my Spanish teacher in high school. We listened to this one day and followed along to learn new vocabulary in a fun way. I have good memories of that class. That's how I was introduced to the fabulous music of Juanes! :) This song is a man pleading with the moon to tell him her secrets of whether this woman he likes like him back. |
Gungor – Church Bells Lyrics | 12 years ago |
For me this song is a nice little reminder. Sometimes I'll reluctantly go to church and find myself instantly annoyed by little things--people singing off key, clapping off beat, the older people dancing like crazy, people saying the stereotypical things you expect to hear Christians say. But then God stops me in my tracks and lovingly calls me to repent and start to just focus on Him. And when I do, I start to see others' worship differently. It still makes me laugh sometimes, between the goofy dance moves and the Christianese, but I can appreciate its strangeness somehow without my judgement coming in to distract me. Afterall, it's not about how we worship but who we worship. |
Gungor – You Are The Beauty Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I love that Gungor is not at all afraid to take on misconceptions about Christianity. It's true that God made things like sex and sight for good, we just have to choose to glorify God with what he has given us. |
Elbow – Grounds for Divorce Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I was thinking of a bar before I realized the context with Glancy, but perhaps it's a double entendre. They're not just telling the history of their friend, but also lamenting the use of alcohol as both celebration and escape. Alcoholism is acceptable in the UK, but still a problem. |
Elbow – The Bones Of You Lyrics | 12 years ago |
This song is genius. The lyrics are so florid, the tune is haunting and the distorted basement-low bass is just perfect. |
Five Iron Frenzy – It Was Beautiful Lyrics | 12 years ago |
This song is great. It's a reflection on their journey as a band. I think it's cool how his favorite memory is such a simple one--not the travel, not the big shows, but the presence of God! |
Josh Garrels – The Resistance Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I was born into a system constructed for failure It's a sinking ship being manned by drunken sailors An escape artist behind the bars of a jailor An asthmatic and they withhold the inhaler If the shoe doesn't fit what good is a tailor In the midst of this crisis please cancel the gala Without a symphony there's no need for a prelude To foreshadow what's to come. See the secret committees, commence with their meetings To make red tape in response to simple questions Questions threaten the perception of the beneficial systems A pyramid scheme with it's cogs and it's pistons Mechanization of men, making more and more Live in a miserable existence How can so few, claim so many victims And this begs the question My rest is a weapon against the oppression Of man's obsession to control things Look at the long line of make believe kings The lord of the flies want's you to kiss his ring Follow new rules with invisible strings And become a puppet in the diabolical scheme How do good men become part of the regime They don't believe in resistance. Hold fast like an anchor in the storm We will not be moved Lesson number one, overcome Every fear of regret and confusion It's all an illusion, delusion Sent to disconnect the holy fusion Of spirit and the flesh Every mortal breath, is meant to bring forth fire But only when the fear of death, gets consumed On the funeral pier So let the flames rise higher And let every man be considered a liar If he doubts the goodness and faithfulness of God Itching ears will compulsively nod in approval When unbelief is taught in all our temples and schools But God can restrain the madness of a fool He can bring His truth through the mouth of a mule You can move an mountain without any tools It just takes the faith of a little seed to make a way through what might seem to be Impossibility, And the ability will match the occasion The outcome will defy explanation The liberation will not be televised When it arrives like lightning in the skies Hold fast like an anchor in the storm For your love, we will rise and overcome Through the fire Hold fast my people and sing Through peace and through suffering All for the joy that it brings, to be free It's gonna cost us everything To follow one Lord and King True love endures everything To be free Hold fast, like an anchor in the storm We will not be moved |
Sufjan Stevens – Year of the Horse Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Risset Rhythm FTW! See the example on gethighnow.com |
Sufjan Stevens – Year of the Ox Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Superb. Bold like an ox. It reminds me a lot of hip-hop (especially at the beginning) which is strange because I've never heard hip-hop like this... There really should be! And it's not all repetition, Sufjan takes it to several harmonic settings, each with unique blips and beats. When that white noise comes in at the end, it's like a refreshing rain. |
Sufjan Stevens – Year of the Snake Lyrics | 12 years ago |
PS It completely captures the nature of the snake. I'm not even sure how, but the texture seems to slink, coil, strike, and climb--capturing the beauty of it's grace and appearance and also the fear of its power. |
Sufjan Stevens – Year of the Snake Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Truly a masterpiece. You hear a lot of his character sound in this, especially when it gets moving toward the end. I think he highlighted on this one because he was born in the year of the snake. |
Sufjan Stevens – Year of the Dog Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Because the site is called SONG meanings, not LYRIC meanings. There can be meaning without words. Sometimes it just takes more effort to appreciate. |
Sufjan Stevens – Year of Our Lord Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I think the placement of this track at the end of the album points to the mysterious eternity after this world passes away, all the cycles stop, and perpetual life with out Lord begins... |
Future of Forestry – Close Your Eyes Lyrics | 12 years ago |
This one is about trusting in God whatever we're going through, whether something bad happens and leaves us dazed (what was that all about now?), or we're in a bad situation (inside it just don't feel like home now), or we aren't sure who we are (sons will spend thier days searching hard for the things they are made of). Sometimes following Christ can feel like walking around in the dark, we cannot see the exact way to the promises God told to us so it's easy to feel abandoned. But if we close our eyes and listen to His voice, he will lead us if we trust Him. |
Future of Forestry – Gazing Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I don't see the prayers as necessarily for a soul mate. The love it talks about is between our Heavenly Father and us. I'm sorry to burst your bubble, lostinaurora, I know that what you said is how you see it which is a beautiful interpretation; but I would be careful not to confuse the gift of a life partner with the greater gifts God has for us: grace, salvation, HIS love. Otherwise one would fall prey to idolatry--his or her loved one as the idol that stands between him or her and God. This song is about returning to the grace of God and finding that He makes you clean and innocent as a child and that He listens to every prayer. It's not duality, God's will for you life may include a mate, but that is not the means nor the end. |
Future of Forestry – Bold and Underlined Lyrics | 12 years ago |
It sounds like someone who falls in love hard and fast (I think I'm falling slow/fast), putting all their energy in their relationships (bold and underlined). It's easy to get hurt living that way. In fact, the need to constantly fill the void with relationships is a form of demonic stronghold one could have in their life. |
Future of Forestry – If You Find Her Lyrics | 12 years ago |
It could also be Christ talking to the Holy Spirit about his bride, the church. There definitely has to be some internal dialogue for one to "ask her heart to come", only the Spirit can do that. |
Future of Forestry – So Close So Far Lyrics | 12 years ago |
One of the delicious, mindbending paradoxes of Christianity: When you're confronted with something without beginning or end you can neither be closer or further away from it at any point. The band's name is from C.S. Lewis, so I suspect the inspiration for this is from the passage in The Four Loves that discusses the unconditionality of God's love. I'm always afraid to write music that's so simple lyrically without rhyme, but this is a good example of how to do that successfully. |
Future of Forestry – Slow Your Breath Down Lyrics | 12 years ago |
We don't gain anything by carrying burdens around only to say at the end "I've been carrying this hurt all my life and I demand compensation for it", so it's better to give it to God. His grace is sufficient for all our mistakes and makes us new again. He has more to give us than we could ever give to him (memories and tears). We're never too busy to spend time with God. We either make time, or He will for us, even if that means destroying our sense of security in something that isn't him. But he always does so in the perfect way to reach us. For some of us it's like a bandaid, for others it's gentle. |
Future of Forestry – Set Your Sails Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I agree with Lampala, but I think the first verse exclusively talks about those eleventh hour workers, saying "Don't miss the boat!" The parable to which it refers teaches us that the reward for those is the same as those who have been working all along. Surely, it's better to do something even if it is little than to do nothing at all in the service of the Lord because the reward is the same. |
Future of Forestry – Holiday Lyrics | 12 years ago |
The ocean is a metaphor for the vast depth of the love of God. Our lives, however we use them, are our gifts to Him, (made acceptable through the sacrifice of Jesus should we accept His salvation). God so longs for us to give ourselves to Him completely, forsaking safety, fear, and sin for His abundant life that "turns the tide" of our lives and makes us whole. |
Future of Forestry – Hills of Indigo Blue Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I can't believe there aren't any comments on this! This is an incredible song in so many ways. Maybe it's just me but it sounds a lot like the new Iron & Wine (of course this predates that). The writing on the wall is a reference to Daniel 5; its cryptic message, only readable by the prophet Daniel, foretold the end of Belshazzar's kingdom. My roommate and I were just talking about this recently after reading through the Old Testament. All throughout the Bible we see leaders who are utterly dependent on the men and women of God to be their spiritual advisors, otherwise thier kingdoms would not prevail. But many just want to save their behinds and could care less about knowing the God from whom they get such knowledge. Sadly, we see this even today, and even with leaders who claim to be Christians... Anyway, that's what I see this song to be about. The Bible is a bold reminder of what happens when we put our trust anywhere but in God, yet we only "softly" keep it in our memory. We recognize that the fall has made us this way, and that we weren't created to live in fear, but freedom. The nations of the world are crying out from all the suffering; (whether or not we hear it) they are calling for the Christians to rise up and be the catalysts of change we were made to be. But do the people recognize that they have to be on board with God's plan for change to come? Rarely. I'm not sure what the hills of indigo blue are, but they bring to mind Abraham and the promise God made regarding his legacy and children as many as the stars. Or they could be a reference to looking for a sign. |
St. Vincent – Actor Out of Work Lyrics | 12 years ago |
It seems like he broke up with her, and she's making fun of him to herself to try and get over him, telling herself that he's worthless without her. The brass knuckles seem indicative of a weakness he feels he needs to compensate for, hence why he dumped her, to make himself feel like he has control. But later she finds out she was right about him needing her and finds him endearing. But she also thinks herself crazy for wanting him back now that he's a wounded animal. The video also kind of paralells this, her subtle delight in the various actors' break downs. It comes off as creepy and cruel, but the lyrics show that maybe she has a reason to be mean if he's been so crappy to her. |
St. Vincent – The Apocalypse Song Lyrics | 12 years ago |
The line "All your praying moments amount to just one breath" is a direct biblical reference to the brevity of the life of man in the grand scheme. I love how she follows that with a suprised gasp. The song is full of these contrasting ideas of extremely long periods of time and brief, flashing moments. It's a metaphor for the conflict between her and the person to whom she is singing. Personally I see a double meaning: the relationship aspect--the long period of time (the relationship) and the short moments (sex). It sounds like she's only happy when she's sleeping with him, if she is at all. Then there's the religious aspect that they disagree how to spend this brief life of theirs, she wants to just enjoy it and go out like a shooting star, he takes it as an urging to live devoted to his religion and convert people (Doesn't have to be Christianity necessarily). Either way, she thinks his devotion is lunacy and he's blind to her desires, so maybe they both think each other is crazy. I don't think the song is about Sufjan. He's deeply religious but not in the same way this song seems to describe. |
Sufjan Stevens – A Conjunction of Drones Simulating the Way in Which Sufjan Stevens Has an Existential Crisis in the Great Godfrey Maze Lyrics | 12 years ago |
It's just the end of "Prairie Fire" (you don't even hear the break between that song and this *spacer/outro*); but it's given a name so it could be another shout out to another small, underappreciated place. |
Sufjan Stevens – In the Words of the Governor Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I guess RackinFooty got his/her wish! Hahahaha. I don't think of this as so much a "new" direction for Sufjan. It resembles the rock-y simplicty of some of his first songs. It's very garage band, but I didn't lose respect for him after listening to it. I think it's brilliant that he's so versatile and he's not "too good" for the raw power of noise rock, or any genre. For all I care, his next album can be in the style of Mariachi music! And it's not because I'll take anything he dishes out whether good or bad, but that he has already proven himself a talented musician/songwriter/composer in all that he's published before so I trust he will continue to amaze (and surprise) us. Certainly he accomplished that with Age of Adz, and "Too Much" is definitely more on the accessible, mellow pop end of the spectrum for that album. So yeah... it doesn't do any good to put Sufjan in a box. He'll just bust out of it and make from it a ridiculously awesome robot costume to super-punch your opinions of who he is/should be as an artist into the next millenium. This song rocks. It's in your face, but intelligent. Wish I knew the other lyrics so I could understand. |
Sufjan Stevens – Joy! Joy! Joy! Lyrics | 12 years ago |
He is saying "marriage", not "page". It's very subtle, but you can hear two syllables in it. Also, I'm hearing "Dan" instead of "and", which doesn't make much sense, save for the name means "justice". It could just be a trick of the ears due to the looping echo... but it's definitely not "damn". |
Sufjan Stevens – The Incarnation Lyrics | 12 years ago |
No comments?! Even if it doesn't have lyrics, it can still have meaning. :) This one is very ethereal and haunting. The chord progression is very dark, then suddenly lifts to a bright major chord. The layering of the instruments makes me think of a film score, this would overarch a whole scene... It's a really lovely depiction of the incarnation of Jesus, the Messiah: mysterious, anticipated, hopeful, and yet sorrowful at the same time (he is called a man of sorrows). |
Sufjan Stevens – How Can the Stone Remain? Lyrics | 12 years ago |
The stone would probably be the heart of stone mentioned in Ezekiel 36:26. But you're right, it's an obstacle of sorts. Rather than two persons of oneself, I think of the two as God and man, his struggle is about being one with God--an idea that probably riddles his mind. I hear "as a half Manchurian plain" or "a half maturing plain/play" or something like that. Probably maturing... At the end he's saying "How can the stone remain" backwards. |
Juanes – La Historia De Juan Lyrics | 12 years ago |
You're totally right about that string part. It gets me every time. I don't imagine this song is autobiographical, but Juanes definitely has a heart for the rejected of society. Many of his songs demonstrate social awareness for the injustices Latin/Middle American people face. |
Jon Foreman – In Love Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I also really love the simplicity of this song. It says just enough, not a word too many. It has a very serene, Asian vibe. In my opinion, the second verse makes the most of the phrase "in love" by demonstrating that love is in all of those things--time, place, form and death. Also, it seems to be talking about the prophecy of the messiah, i.e., in God's time the messiah will come take our place, in the form of man, sent to die for our sins--and the idea of love overarches even the pain of it all. After that there's a movement between "my love" as either the aforementioned thing is a symbol of God's love, or he is referring to his beloved. Both are correct. I believe Jesus is the speaker throughout the song, but it leaves room for interpretation. One could also see it as a Christian reciprocating his love to God in worship, making references to following Jesus and taking up his cross. |
DM Stith – Braid of Voices Lyrics | 12 years ago |
He mentions red, white and blue. Perhaps a reference to USA? If so, it seems like he's talking about the weight of realization that your freedom was bought with others' bloodshed; and he contrasted that with the mundane, tv watching culture of Americans now refering to himself. It gives me the impression he was dreaming of the history channel or something. The "I" is someone on the screen. But it also seems more personal, because the last line mentions his name. It's so somber. |
DM Stith – Morning Glory Cloud Lyrics | 12 years ago |
He performs this live solo with loop pedals. It's really something to see. This song seems to be about running away from a big, perhaps divinely appointed, responsiblity. |
DM Stith – Fire of Birds Lyrics | 12 years ago |
This one airs more on the bright major modality than his other songs, with touches of haunting minor. I like the hand claps and how his voice sounds. |
