| The Black Heart Procession – The Waiter Lyrics

Made me think of the nabokov short story "A Matter of Chance". An emigre waiter working in a train is separated from his wife for years, becomes addicted to cocaine and decides to commit suicide by putting his head between the buffers of two train carriages. His wife happens to be in close proximity on the same train, but neither have any idea of the other's presence and the act goes ahead. Just a personal association. |

this song is about fulfillment. suppose mushrooms would make sense, though ive never taken them (someday maybe...) i have read "the doors of perception". but i think you can still get that irrational, full feeling of is-ness without mushrooms. lovely, lovely song. i dont know much else of porcupine tree's stuff, but are there any others that sound like this? |

this song always reminds me of prometheus, mostly because of the lines "i stole the keys to the skies" and "when the fire is in his eyes". not that its about the myth, but thats the association i get from it. also has something to do with the video clip when the guys are covered in mud (some stories say prometheus, who stole fire from the heavens, also molded men out of clay). |

| The Wombats – Let's Dance To Joy Division Lyrics

this is quite a silly/ fad song and probably wont last, but i dont think its actually offensive. joy division were amazing and this isnt trying to compare them- more so just talking of a personal experience (i was suprised when i heard the lyrics were literally about dancing to joy division) and giving a bit of a tribute. its not a deep song at all, nor does it try to be.
i agree with Chymes that Joy Division are often pretty dancy too (the song "Disorder" for instance). songs/ art in general that deal with death are often some of the best celebrants of life. its a twofold thing. |

nostalgia over a vision of eternity he had with someone. "you can have this life and a cup of tea"- having all the joy of life in the moment, but at the same time that something looming behind it which is more constant and fatal than a moment. |

I love how he says "nina twin". that always sticks in my head. its weirdly endearing.
brilliant song altogether, i think the meaning has been stated pretty clearly already, but the element of confusion/ crisis of self could probably be applied without there even being a known chemical imbalance. sometimes you just feel unbalanced and you wish you could bring it down to something you can control. but you cant. so you keep on playing with theories about yourself, and you dont know whether your detachment is simplifying or making things worse. you feel like everything you are is just a chemical composition & worry that everything is contrived, man-made in your own laboratory. |

I like the idea of a girl who wants to experiment with death. maybe she finds understanding in the guy over exchanges: internet or dating or brief looks in a hallway somewhere. they play around with ideas and death-aesthetics without really meaning them, they have their own little worlds of violence, fads of inclination, but passive/ innocent hearts in general. s&m with philosophy, at least, thats the picture i got. the words look great together. |

"You come round here in a brand new shirt
And announce that you're a brand new girl
But you stole that line
And you probably stole the shirt as well"
Hilarious haha. I like the girl in this song, she sounds like me. |

| Elf Power – The Sun Is Forever Lyrics

life goes on despite death? I dunno.
guess maybe he's saying that people are always looking to death/ the afterlife, afraid for meaning, but he sees meaning in the fact of everything being continuous and interconnected, and that when people die, other people still live. maybe the gravity of this abolishes fear, etc. maybe not. |

*sighs* Ian Curtis. I get the feeling of this song, but its difficult to describe as anything particular. I think a lot of people above have pretty well grasped it- the 'nothing matters' mindset, and wanting to fade away into one's own end, and not be bothered by human stuff in doing so. those moods are the worst- i tend to feel that way when ive invested a lot into one dream/ ambition, and then all at once it strikes me that im never going to fulfill it as well as i planned, so everything else seems pointless. its the cold, hopeless interlude between blind rushes of ambition. |

| Bat for Lashes – Bat's Mouth Lyrics

obviously, its a metaphor for sex (albeit a bizarre one).
the girl is thankful for her origin, or "mother sea" (feminity) and what it allows her to feel and do. very sylvan/ woodland kind of imagery implies that the two have artlessly reverted to their roots, and all of the forest-creature metaphors entail the blundering innocence of animals. |

this song reminds me of the way i felt some months ago. i was attending university part-time, studying philosophy for the first time in my life, and yearning to be devoted to something, but unable to attach. my routine consisted of catching the bus, buying coffee and slurpees, and reading too much. i avoided friends/ acquaintances, and generally out of touch with myself. trying too hard to believe/ define the world= profound detachment, gronlandic edit syle. |

wow nobody has commented this song.
it is off the beach soundtrack, & i suppose a general hymn to taking things as they are, letting the present wash over one, etc. or not. its a good song. |

| The Long Blondes – Giddy Stratospheres Lyrics

contrast "giddy stratospheres" with "back here on earth" and you see the difference between what could be and what is. i have a very imaginative friend who is involved with a girl who is more practical/ down-to-earth. it always seems as if he's trying to romanticize her, instead of seeing her for who she is & realizing that theyre not really right for eachother. he thinks he has the giddy stratospheres, but she doesnt want them or feel them. i think that this is the kind of situation the song remonstrates. |

"For someone half as smart, youd be a work of art"
never sure whether its referring to the girl selling herself short/ acting half as smart as she is, or whether hes making a sober judgment from outside of the drinking etc that she is involved in, and saying "for someone who is where you are, you would be perfect". either way, it works. |

| The Smashing Pumpkins – Daphne Descends Lyrics

in the first and fifth verses are references the nymph daphne, from the greek legend of apollo & daphne. she is chased through the woods by apollo (to oblivion) and to escape from his advances, transforms into a laurel tree.
"and the winding vines
the pretty boys dive
and thru the pinhole stars
into the shadow mind
you will lose him then
on some gentle dawn
this boy is here and gone" |
