Thanks for putting these up so quickly! I'd say it's definitely "potty-mouthed." Wonderful song, though I know better than to expect less :)

Great Lake Swimmers – Everything Is Moving So Fast Lyrics 14 years ago
Some beautiful imagery here. I wonder if the second verse is addressed to th planets? It seems that way, with the phrase "your heavenly bodies." If so, are the other "we"s and "you"s also directed at them? Would love to hear the band explain this one!

Andrew Bird – Tenuousness Lyrics 15 years ago
Well that's settled then! Do you think Mr. Bird is aware of the mental gymnastics we go through trying to decode his lyrics? Probably not. Love the "they were baaaad" story, thanks for sharing/enlightening!

Great Lake Swimmers – Various Stages Lyrics 15 years ago
Not a lot to add here, since I think the being-in-love-with-a-bipolar-person thing is pretty clear. I only want to say that I think he did this beautifully and I love how he parallels "through various states of madness" and "in various states of undress;" both are expressions of vulnerability and show how deep connections and trust run.

Andrew Bird – Tenuousness Lyrics 15 years ago
I've got to got with "harbor sots," for best fitting both the lyrical context and Bird's lack of accent (haha). I did a search for "Hobis-hots" and "Hobishot" and found only a handful of hits ALL related to this song, making me think that it was a mishearing/typo... unless anyone can tell me exactly what a "Hobis-hot" is?

Blitzen Trapper – Furr Lyrics 15 years ago
Not sure is it's a metaphor or actually a story about a man who turns physically turns into a wolf, though I have to admit I prefer the latter. Either way, excellent song. I'm curious, however, to know if anyone knows why "Furr" is spelled the way it is. I think it may be possible that's an intentional misspelling to show that it wasn't actually fur, supporting the metaphor theory. Probably it's completely arbitrary or something else entirely. If anyone actually knows or even just has a good theory, I'd love to hear it.

Frightened Rabbit – Snake Lyrics 15 years ago
Gungalei: I thought it was just a very cute song until I read your comment. It fits way too well. I'm kind of disturbed now (not so much by the nature of the song as that I've been listening to it in blissful ignorance).

Great Lake Swimmers – Your Rocky Spine Lyrics 15 years ago
P.S. This is also missing lyrics... last verse should read:

They told me to be careful up there,
where the wind blows a venomous rage through your hair.
They told me to be careful up there,
where the wind rages through your hair

Great Lake Swimmers – Your Rocky Spine Lyrics 15 years ago
All of these are right as far as I'm concerned. My own personal interpretation is that he's talking about his love for someone, whole love, with recognition that all of us have our roots, and end in, the land.

Everything else I could say has already been said. This song is simply beautiful.

Tori Amos – Virginia Lyrics 15 years ago
I'm pretty sure (well, as sure as it's possible to be on a Tori song- so many fucking layers!) that this is about Virginia, the actual spirit of that slice of land. Tori's choosing to characterize her as female and definitely Native American- turquoise serpents, the Red Road part, etc.- which makes sense because that was the first culture to live there, and the Native American connection with and spirituality given to land fits her metaphor nicely.

Basically, Virginia's all chillin' happy with her native peeps, and then said native peeps are like, "Oh no the white man is coming, hellll no! He is going to take to Virginia too!" So the white man does, but Virginia being what she is (land, the basis of life) she is fully giving. Unlike the natives the white man doesn't know the right amount to take: he just takes and takes (hands open bit.)

The savoir bit I'm not as sure on, though I think it's Virginia taking the whole Jesus thing (all will be made well in the end) on credit, but doesn't see it come to fruition. So life goes on and she's losing her self to all the corruption, both from individuals and politically. Forgetting her name, not knowing what her turquoise serpents represent- she has lost her spirit.

In a nutshell, a song about "raping the land," using the metaphor of physically doing so (gives him her body, covering him, arouse.)

I don't think it's possible to have a recording of this song NOT to be beautiful, but Sufjan does it unusual justice.

Simon and Garfunkel – Baby Driver Lyrics 15 years ago
Haha I was so excited about the line "I'm not talking about your pigtails, but I'm talking 'bout your sex appeal." There is nothing better than Simon and Garfunkel acting very un-Simon and Garfunkel. Totally hilarious and fun.

Iron & Wine – Peng! 33 (Stereolab cover) Lyrics 15 years ago
Has any other Iron & Wine fan read "One Hundred Years of Solitude?" I've been a fan of this song for awhile, and just tonight began reading that book. I only got to page eight when I stopped dead at the words "It seemed so simple and so prodigious at the same time..."

Upon further investigation I found that these lyrics are taken from pages seven and eight (in my edition) of the book. The book reads "donkeys" not "monkeys," but I don't think this alters the meaning.

To understand the lyrics you'd have to know what they mean in the context of the story:

The character thinking these thoughts lives in a remote town composed of twenty houses that is visited annually by gypsies hawking the wonders of the world, like magnets and false teeth, that are so foreign to the inhabitants of the remote village they seem magical. The character is frustrated that all these things are already boring/established/history to the rest of the world, hence the "across the river... monkeys" comment.

The one thing I have yet to understand is the song's title.

Eddie Vedder – Hard Sun (Indio cover) Lyrics 15 years ago
I'm not convinced of the "pin her charm" bit. In the original version it is "pillage her." It definitely sounds different in this version, but more like "bitter charm" to me. Maybe that's just wishful thinking though... "pillage her" is just better!

Andrew Bird – Fake Palindromes Lyrics 16 years ago
First Andrew Bird song I fell in love with- I my later-developed but longer-lasting love for other of his songs outloved mine for this, but you never forget your first right? I am curious to know if there are other heavy fans of both Bird and Dylan- everyone seems to have missed that the line about "blood in her eyes for you" is ripped (Hey, I'm not complaining!) straight from Dylan's unimaginatively titled "Blood in My Eyes." The songs constant refrain is the line, "I've got blood in my eyes for you."

Just thought I'd throw that fun fact out. From the rest of the Dylan song I assume that line means impatiently and tortuously wanting someone. However, I don't think Bird's song is meant to have much of a meaning other than his usual games with language.

Brett Dennen – Darlin' Do Not Fear Lyrics 16 years ago
Weird, I'm not a Brett Dennen fan except this one song, and it has no comments?

I think the meaning to this song is pretty straightforward: "'...it won't last, the worries will pass. All your troubles they don't stand a chance."

Such a chill, happy song :)

Tori Amos – Mrs. Jesus Lyrics 16 years ago
I love this song in its own right, and never realized the possible Beatles/Zeppelin references, but I love them! To add to the Beatles, their song 'Let It Be' does reference "mother Mary", making the connection even more suspicious.
