| Gordon Lightfoot – Endless Wire Lyrics

Gordon (Rest his soul) was a great artist, but a very imperfect man, just like you and I. He was perfectly incapable of keeping his marriage vows in all his marriages, and as a result, in the most Trumpian fashion, he deflects. In many of his songs, he all but accuses his lover(s) of infidelity, as if he's pure as the driven snow. God told David that, because he chose to revel in bloodshed, the sword will not depart from him and his family. And so it was. |

| Joan Armatrading – Shapes and Sizes Lyrics

Love the sentiments expressed - so not wait until it's too late to express your love and appreciation for someone. The "It" in "It comes in all shapes and sizes" is 'love'; no matter what kind of love it is, don't wait until it's over to express it. Off of one of Joan's best albums but under-appreciated. |

Like a lot of others in here, I, too, liked the venom. But do you know where the bite and the spite originally came from? Which artist in modern popular music, without whom there'd be no Fionna, along with a slew of other artists? (And the records he's putting out 40+ years later are BETTER than ever before! His singing, certainly, where he used to cheat, is a lot more musical today)
That's right. I'm talking about the Zimmerman Dude, man! |

Love the sentiments of this song: it's the music industry, but it could just as well be a jab at the film industry (How's about Spiderman 62!!), and the entertainment industry in general. What's artistic and original gets snuffed out or burned at the stake. But when the occasional exception comes along and becomes successful, the world goes ga-ga and wonders why it's taken so long. Before we go pointing fingers, all the film/music industry etc are giving us is what WE want, when we vote with our pocket book. So look yourself in the mirror tonight - do YOU want the same old same old, or are you ready for some ADVENTURE! |

| Hall and Oates – Sara Smile Lyrics

Aw M-A-N! Right after I posted the above, I did a search, and found the answer to my own question in a nano-second. In Songfacts (awesome site as well - link below), we're told, A) Sara Allen is indeed Daryl Hall's girlfriend - for 28 YEARS!! They never married, and broke up in 2001. That's sucks as much as knowing that Sara had a sister, Janna, who co-wrote songs too with H&O (Kiss on My List being the biggest one - only one?), and SHE died in 1993 of leukemia. That made me all cheerful for the afternoon. Sortir les rasoirs!

But you can't say the internet isn't powerful. Thanks, Al! |

Beautiful song - Daryl Hall is one of the only white dudes who can sing blue-eyed soul (Robert Palmer also comes to mind...) It's fun to see so many Sara's named in honor of this song (I'll refrain from exploring the creepy angle). Does anyone know the biographical tale behind this? There's a "Sara Allen" who co-wrote a couple of H&O's songs. Is it the same Sara? Pray tell if you know. |

Good comments, Nimble. My favorite line I often use is in "In Held.." The lesson lies in learning and by teaching I'll be taught. For there's nothing hidden anywhere, it's all there to be sought. |

Very interesting. Thanks. Listened to this song all my life and never asked the question why it has such a weird title. Keith Reid could be overbearing and pretentious at his worst, but I think he did a fine job here. |

Interesting thought, born2sl and sniperspike, but one has to be careful. Existentialism as many people understand it is anathaema to the faith that Switchfoot espouses and sings about, and if you know Jon and the boys and their faith, they are incapable of writing and recording something that Sartre would embrace. DOUBT they will, mess up they do, as all Christians go through that, but the doubt and mistakes are temporary, and despair is not without a ray of hope. This very song was presented at our church today (Northland, Orlando area). It was the first time they've done Switchfoot, and it was totally awesome. |

You don't have to be sorry, Hotel-Paper, but you DO have to be IMAGINATIVE! Don't know whether you meant the porn movie director to be a compliment, but I don't consider it as one (sex is good, but porn is bad). Look, I'm not claiming de facto authority on that interpretation, but, hey, got alternative ones, let alone better ones? If so, let's hear them. Maybe you're too young or still a virgin (NEITHER meant to be derogatory, but the way), but relationships between a man and a woman at that age centers around sex. And if you know Fiona at all, you'll know A) she is not above referring to sexual matters (so you're going to say I'm a sex addict to, not suggest, but TELL you that "Limp", too, has overt sexual references?); B) she is clever and subtle with words, but not so esoteric that nobody gets it. So here's the next bombshell, my friend: that third man "guessing right" is a reference to the man and woman having an orgasm together! There, I've ruined you for life, haven't I? |

While there's no doubt that "filthy pane" is meant to mean "filthy pain", the song is actually more straightforward. Fiona's listening to this lying bastard that she couldn't see through. Of course this means some of the rest of the lyrics doesn't make as much sense. |

Celestia: agree with your comment about leeches. While these creatures were known or believe to cure all kinds of diseases (even today), their main claim to fame is as a cure to diseases of the head (headaches and "brain congestions"). What a CATCHY song with the handclaps, and ironically/deceptively cheerful. The metronomic quality of it is indicative of the pattern this foolish woman keeps falling back into. Great song, great album, great artist! |

Has anyone heard Fiona say, in an interview or something, that this is homage to the Beach Boys? Musically, there's a certain kinship to that song off the BB's "Holland" album. Either that or I must be crazy! |

I don't know if you are all too shy or too prudish. This song either has some clever sexual overtones or my mind's in the gutter (or both). Sort of like, if you think the song "Spill the wine" is about an alcoholic beverage made from grapes, you're a little too innocent to read on.
We're not sure exactly how the first man disappointed poor Fiona. For want of a more delicate term, she got dumped. So she's going to get him back (great double entendre, as others pointed out). It's the second and third verses that are the "dirty" ones.
Next one up is the man not capable of satisfying Fiona the "usual" way, but was given some credit for his oral skills (the part about him putting himself so low). And the third one, the one she wants to "get back" as in "recapture", WAS able to satisfy Fiona. He didn't always guess right, but he usually "got my gist". Wooooh! But the best line belongs to Ms. Apple's elloquent statement of self understanding: "he let me down when he didn't disappoint me" beautifully describes the perpetual pissy mood she's in. (she picked the album cover because they resemble little fists, which, of course, turn into beautiful blossoms!) Fiona Baby: I hope I'm not insensitive when I say this, but for your own good, and that of those around you, you've GOT to forgive and forget. It must be a bitch to be around you but, MAN, I LOVE your music. |

OK so why is the SONG TITLE wrong? It's clearly Playmate of the Mouth, as the lyrics say. No interpretation needed - I think, as Fiona Apple would say, we get the "jist". |

I appreciate all the interpretations various fans have posted. Quite frankly, even as an English major, I've always been to mentally lazy to try and interpret some of the songs of my favourite band. I've always thought space, and a new civilization. I love the interpretation of Wurm as a rocket taking off. But with this song, you don't have to know the meaning to appreciate and enjoy it. One of the greatest rock songs of all time is what Starship Trooper is. |

Reading all of these comments makes me want to listen to the song again (not multi-tasking but CAREFULLY, maybe on a headset). The literal meaning seems pretty obvious, which is why VanMorrison's comment is at the very least thought-provoking. My interp has always been more straightforward but still symbolic: it's a cold-cold world out there, not just in Antarctica. But when two people find warmth, perhaps out of desperation, the cold melts away. And even if they still die from the cold, they die "warm". This talks to the "Fragile" theme, and it brings us to what I believe is a MAJOR error in the lyrics posted above. The last time the line appears, it should be "Were we ever WARMER on that day..." They freeze to death together, but it's a warmth that accompanies their death, not cold. The movie equivalent (and there may be more than one) is Midnight Cowboy. |

Agree, 1 lb, and let me add that, beyond the harmonics, the way Howe plays a simple d chord, moves it up to the 7th fret, then the 9th, just totally transforms the usual D-G-A progression into something extraordinary. Yes is probably my all-time favorite band (pre that Trevor dude), and I'm so glad I found this site. Thanks, everyone. |

I rediscovered not only this song, but the mighty Zep in general just recently. Agree that it really rocks, and is really under-rated (thanks to the album's crazy cover?) Thanks for the light y'all shed on the lyrics too. Crowds, daughter, changing priorities... makes a lot of sense. |
