Endless Wire Lyrics

I ain't got nothin' to hide
My mind is an endless wire
I got both feet on the ground
I ain't got no one for hire
I ain't got a thing to show
My lines have all expired
So don't go foolin' around
And set my wheels afire
Down in the dark of a burnt out soul
There's a few good second hand dreams
Deep in the dark of a heavenly night with you
Down in the black of a bottomless hole
There's a few good second hand scenes
Deep in the dark of the heavenly blue
Where the sea runs green

I ain't got nothin' to give
My life is an endless climb
My love's a paperback dream
I don't have nothin' but time
I ain't got a thing to show
I don't know my own name
So don't go foolin' around
And set my wheels afire

Down in the dark of a burnt out soul
There's a few good second hand dreams
Deep in the dark of a heavenly night with you
Down in the black of a bottomless hole
There's a few good second hand scenes
Deep in the dark of the heavenly blue
Where the sea runs green

I ain't got nothin' to hide
My mind is an endless wire
I got both feet on the ground
I don't have no one for hire
I ain't got a thing to show
My life is an endless dream
My love's a paperback dream
I ain't got nothin' but time

Cover art for Endless Wire lyrics by Gordon Lightfoot

This is a very interesting song given the variation in lyrics and music between the verses and the chorus. Lightfoot was trying to venture into the rock genre, thus the toughness of the words and thrumming electric guitar of the verses. Then the chorus by contrast is a soaring romantic interlude, where he extolls "the heavenly night with you". But there is still melancholy as his soul is "burnt out", they are in the "black of a bottomless hole". Even his dreams are "second hand", it exhibits a world weariness, as if he's gone this route before, they're used dreams and scenes.

The last verse seems to identify Lightfoot personally, as he says "my life is an endless rhyme" which references his professional life at the time as obssesively writing songs, being under recording contract. Then the line "my love's a paperback dream" references his love life and links it to If You Could Read My Mind, which also refers to a woman's view of their relationship being like a paperback novel. Here he's saying his love is not real, it's a dream from a paperback.

Gordon (Rest his soul) was a great artist, but a very imperfect man, just like you and I. He was perfectly incapable of keeping his marriage vows in all his marriages, and as a result, in the most Trumpian fashion, he deflects. In many of his songs, he all but accuses his lover(s) of infidelity, as if he's pure as the driven snow. God told David that, because he chose to revel in bloodshed, the sword will not depart from him and his family. And so it was.
