Bruce Springsteen – Tougher Than The Rest Lyrics 18 years ago
One of my favorite Springsteen songs. Chris LeDoux's version is also great if you're a country fan. To me, this song is basically about lovin' the one you're with, and accepting their faults and past imperfections.

Eric Clapton – Promises Lyrics 18 years ago
The first time I heard this song was on a radio station, and it just sucked me right in. I didn't recognize Eric Clapton's voice and was lucky enough to find the name of the song and artist by looking on the radio's online website. It has a powerful message and has a unique beat to it. The la la la... part is cool, too. It's definitely about a rocky relationship, with 2 people who each have their own habits that are tearing the relationship apart ("I got a problem, can you relate?").

Jimmy Buffett – Come Monday Lyrics 18 years ago
I love the line "Remember that night in Montana when we said there'd be no room for doubt." It always takes me back to another time and another place.

Richard Thompson – Coyotes Lyrics 18 years ago
Very touching song, sad, and reminiscent. Don Edward's version is great. This song was briefly played in the documentary film, "Grizzly Man." Pretty interesting to look up who these different figures were and what all they did: Sam Bass, Stan Watie, etc. Great song about the West, what it was, and what we've lost. An idyllic look at the good ole days.
"Well he cursed all the roads and the oil men
And he cursed the automobile
Said this is no place for a hombre like I am
In this new world of asphalt and steel"
- Basically, by becoming an industrialized nation, we've lost a lot of our natural treasures. Asphalt and shopping malls are taking up what used to be green, wide-open spaces that were full of habitat. It reminds me of Lynyrd Skynyrd's "All I Can Do Is Write About It" -
"...Did you ever stop and think about well
The air you're breathin'
...Cause when I can see the concreate slowly creeping
Lord, take me and mine before that comes"

The Rolling Stones – Streets of Love Lyrics 18 years ago
Great song, and I think the previous comments have been well said. I like the part -
"A band just played the wedding march
and the cornerstore mends broken hearts"
It kinda illustrates two extremes: one couple getting married and being as happy as can be. Another guy experiencing heartache and dealing with it. It reminds me of some Merle Haggard lyrics -
"Memories and drinks don't mix too well
Jukebox records don't play those wedding bells"

The Rolling Stones – Fool To Cry Lyrics 18 years ago
I like this song a lot. It doesn't sound like anything else. Great chill-out song. I think it was in the movie "Beautiful Girls" (which is great by the way).

Fleetwood Mac – Silver Springs Lyrics 18 years ago
"Time cast a spell on you
But you won't forget me
I know I could have loved you
But you would not let me."

WOW!!! Words and Music, that's (real) life man! Intense, sad, real.

Guns N' Roses – Patience Lyrics 18 years ago
I love the ending. "I've been walking the streets at night, just tryin' to get it right..." It's a strange ending in terms of what the rest of the song sounds like, but it really works well. Pretty creative!

Great song. Listen to Don Edwards' version, it's much more authentic and real. Strawberry roans are beautiful.

Merle Haggard – The Way I Am Lyrics 19 years ago
To me, this song is a personal look into someone who isn't totally happy with the way or direction that his life is heading. Maybe the hussle and bussle of everyday life - such as being a professional musician - has gotten to be too much, and they long for somewhere remote and peaceful where they can relax and truly enjoy themselves. Another Haggard song, "Big City," reminds me of this tune; both songs have a protagonist who longs to get "Back to the Basics of Love [and life] (Waylon)." We've all been there, where we just wanted to get away from everyday life and get back to the simple, most important things in life.

Merle Haggard – Misery and Gin Lyrics 19 years ago
The first four lines of this song say it all. We've all been there, trying to forget someone by drowning their memory, but alcohol only makes the memories come back to haunt us. You can't find comfort and understanding in a bar, underneath the "neon lights." But yet, we always go there for answers. Merle Haggard - "Poet of the Common Man" - has got to be one of the top 5 best songwriters of ALL time. And yet, there were only a few posts/comments about his songs when I made this post. What's wrong with this world?!

Waylon Jennings – Amanda Lyrics 19 years ago
"It's a measure of people who don't understand
The pleasures of life in a hillbilly band"

What a great line and oh so true. I relate this line to all those people who say that country music is too twangy, too sad, too old-fashioned, and too backwards. Country music is real, is about life, and is the most honest and revealing genre of music that I've ever experienced. It's a shame that some people don't get to experience it. And, ol' Waylon is one of my favorites of all-time. There should definitely be a lot more of his songs on this site such as "Drinking and Dreaming," "Broken Promise Land," "I've Always Been Crazy," "It's Not Supposed to be That Way," etc. etc. etc. I mean, come on, these are classics!!!

Townes Van Zandt – To Live Is to Fly Lyrics 19 years ago
What a great song! It's full of "life quotes" that you can hang on your wall or quote on some social network page or whatever floats your boat. In that sense, it reminds me of Jimmy Buffett's "Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes." I don't mean that the two songs are similar in their subject matter or anything; I mean that they are alike in that they are both full of great quotes that have to do with life and are worded just right. And, I mean that as a complement to both songs because I believe that both songs are great and are classics and excellently written.
A person could spend pages upon pages writing on the meanings of this song, as it's so much about life, and life is pretty complex and different for everyone. Instead, I'll just point out one of my favorite parts of the song:
The second part of this song - :
"Days up and down they come
Like rain on a conga drum
Forget most, remember some
But don't turn none of way"

- This part reminds me of lyrics from Bob Marley's "No Woman No Cry":
"Good friends we have
Oh, good friends we've lost along the way
In this bright future
You can't forget your past
So, dry your tears, I say"

To me, both songs speak about a person's past. Both are saying that everyone's past is full of some pain and heartbreak and misery, but we cannot allow our past to control us or negatively affect our future. Instead, we must learn from our mistakes and move on from them, to become more experienced, wiser souls, who won't make the same mistakes, again. We should forgive ourselves for our past, but we should never forget it because we can learn a great deal from those good and bad experiences.

Townes Van Zandt – If I Needed You Lyrics 19 years ago
Beautiful song. There's not much that tops Townes Van Zandt in terms of songwriting. He's one of my favorites, and someone that I wish I would have gotten to see live and in person. I find it interesting that there are only a few posts/comments concerning Townes' songs. Guess it goes to show that the majority of people don't know a good thing, don't know what good music is, and don't understand the good life. Maybe that's the way it's supposed to be. People tend to screw stuff up anyway.
To me, this is a great love song, about two people who have such a strong bond and feel an intense loyalty to one another that they'd make the ultimate sacrifice if necessary. Love songs are a dime a dozen, but Townes' writing is full of creativity and makes an old subject seem new and fresh. Emmylou Harris and Don Williams did a duet of this song, and it does justice to Townes' writing. Emmylou's voice adds a sweetness to this emotionally-dreanched song, and Don Williams sounds like an experienced, wise man that everyone pays attention to.

Rosanne Cash – September When It Comes Lyrics 19 years ago
This is a deep, deep song that I still haven't quite figured out yet. I was hoping that someone else had already posted a comment that would give me some extra insight into it. Nevertheless, it's a great song, Rosanne Cash's voice is so soothing and heartfelt. The version that I have of this song includes a duet with her father, the great "Man In Black" himself, which makes it even better in my eyes. It's a beautiful, yet terribly sad, song. "I cannot be who I was then; In a way, I never was" is probably my favorite part of the song. Furthermore, September seems to be a special month. It's the month which brings in the fall season. "Strange how the night moves, With Autumn closing in" (Bob Seger from "Night Moves"). Several songs mention it, and it's especially significant to me because it's the month in which when I became a man. Long live the music and memory of Johnny and June and may Rosanne continue making great music!

Pirates Of The Mississippi – Feed Jake Lyrics 19 years ago
Great classic country song. I've loved it since I was a young boy growin' up watching CMT. It means even more to me now that I've owned and lived with a dog for 2.5 years. It's strange how close you can get to a dog, but you really can. This song is also good because it talks about how closed-minded and hypocritical we can be as a society. If we were all more open-minded and weren't so quick to judge others, we'd be much better off as a society and the world would be a much better off place. I mean, who cares if two men or two women want to get married. "Does it really matter?" We're all sinners on this earth, tryin' to figure things out, and do the best that we can with the cards that we are dealt. If I die before I walk, feed Tana.

Johnny Lee – Lookin' for Love Lyrics 19 years ago
I've always loved this song since watching "Urban Cowboy" as a youngster. It sums up life for all too many people growing up and looking for that elusive four-leafed clover that Lefty Frizzell sang about. I guess that in finding the right person, you gotta first spend some time experiencing others and making mistakes that'll ultimately lead to you meeting that right person. Simple but a great song!

Tim McGraw – Angry All The Time Lyrics 19 years ago
Great song. Most people who love country music, therefore, love sad songs. This one is up there in terms of its degrees of sadness and regret and all that. I'm pretty sure that Bruce Robinson wrote it. If you like it, you should listen to other Bruce Robinson songs like "Travelin' Soldier," "Wrapped," "End Like That," etc. He's a great singer and songwriter. Tim McGraw does a great job of singing this deep tune. Like Conway Twitty, Tim McGraw seems to be a song's best friend.

Pat Green – Threadbare Gypsy Soul Lyrics 19 years ago
This is probably my favorite Pat Green song. The fact that Willie Nelson sings in it makes it all the better. This song appeals to me because I can relate to much of the lyrics, including the love for the road, the love of everything that a cowboy stands for, etc. The line "I can't change and it's a sin, I hope Saint Peter's gonna let me in" is cool. It's like we know who were are as a person, we know that we're not perfect; we just hope that we can find someone who'll accept us for all our faults and love us for it. Great song.

Bob Seger – Roll Me Away Lyrics 19 years ago
Another Bob Seger masterpiece! This song just makes me want to get in my car, roll down the windows, crank up some good music, drive out to some country side where theres no traffic, just beautiful countryside, and just drive the hell out of my car! "Roll Me Away" is like so many classic country "road" songs, BUT it is sooo much more. The scene about the young lady heading back home has much significance. It's talking about the independence, pride, and "balls" of a loner; a person who knows where he stands in life, loves his freedom, won't let anything or anybody stand in the way of "livin'" life. As Merle Haggard sang about, such a person believes that "down every road, there's always one more city. I'm on the road, the highway is my home" (from Merle Haggard, "Lonesome Fugitive"). Great song from the a great song writer and singer.

Bob Seger – Against the Wind Lyrics 19 years ago
I love this song! It's one of my all-time favorites. And what else can you say about Bob Seger, he's just a great song writer and singer.
I've always thought of this song as a sort of life journey. The beginning is like the teenage years, with your first love and all the heartbreak and lonliness and wisdom that comes from that experience. The next part seems to be like college years and growing up, being surrounded by people who aren't truly friends, maybe more like "good-time friends," which is much different than a real friend. The song is about growing up, about recovering from heartbreak, forgiving her and forgiving yourself. The ending - to me - is about a person who has found his soulmate, has found happiness, but is still struggling with life, his past. A great song. Bob Seger is one of the greatest song writers ever, along with Merle Haggard and Townes Van Zant.

Bob Seger – Night Moves Lyrics 19 years ago
I love Bob Seger as a song writer and singer. This song has always appealed to me, since I was 15 or 16 years old. It's definitely about teenage years, growing up, experiencing a girl for the first time, making mistakes, and everything else that is great about being an adolescent. Recently, the song gained more importance and significance for me. I spent a couple of summers ago working at a ranch out west and met a girl. Needless to say, we got to know each other, liked each other, and had some good times. The lyrics "I used her, she used me, but neither one cared, we were getting our share" really appealed to me after that experience. We were all 'hot and heavy' at the ranch, but once we went our separate ways, the flame died. I soon learned that we indeed used each other to each get something out of it, to each get what we wanted. I don't regret it at all. I'm glad that I can always listen to this song to take me back to that summer. "Ain't it funny how you remember?" Bob Seger is THE MAN!!!

Jim Croce – I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song Lyrics 19 years ago
It's a great song. There's so many times and cases where it's hard to articulate one's feelings in the right way. Many times, songs do a much better job of getting those feelings across. Like the quote from "Mamma's Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys": "They'd rather give you a song than diamonds or gold," this song speaks to that kind of audience and personality. I think this song especially appeals to the more soft-spoken, shy person. Jim Croce was an awesome song writer and singer!

Steve Earle – Guitar Town Lyrics 19 years ago
One of my favorite songs of all time. Along with Townes Van Zant's "Pancho and Lefty," I never get tired of hearing this song. It's another great country "road" song. Like Marshall Tucker Band's "Heard It In a Love Song," Merle Haggard's "Lonesome Fugitive," and many others, this song expresses the love for being on the road and all the freedom and independence that comes along with that lifestyle. Heck of a tune!
