Black Sabbath – Zero The Hero Lyrics 3 years ago
@[gregorybrian:35512] Rap was already there at that time (1983). Hell, rap and sprechgesang are the same thing from different cultures. Bob Dylan did it too with Subterranean Homesick Blues.

Black Sabbath – Under The Sun Lyrics 3 years ago
It just occurred to me, after hearing this song a million times over the past 30+ years that the title completes King Solomon’s (according to rabbinic tradition) observation in Ecclesiastes 1:9: “...there is no new thing...” (better known as “There is nothing new...”).

Bauhaus – Mask Lyrics 3 years ago
I think this song is about bearded men working in an industrial setting, wearing face protection and a mask to filter out contaminants.

Interesting how everyday life can inspire poetry that sound so mystical and esoteric.

The Beatles – Hello, Goodbye Lyrics 3 years ago
“Talking in the 1990s to his official biographer, Barry Miles, McCartney said that the lyrics address duality, reflecting his astrological sign of Gemini. He added: ‘It's such a deep theme in the universe, duality – man woman, black white, ebony ivory, high low, right wrong, up down, hello goodbye – that it was a very easy song to write.’ McCartney also said that, in ‘Hello, Goodbye’, he was promoting "the more positive side of the duality’.”

I listened to this song again today after a long time and all I can think about is Donald Tr*mp. I think MM saw his like coming YEARS in advance. Seducing so-called christians who condemn everyone who doesn't believe the same things they do yet violate the guidelines of their faith every chance they get. Worshiping greed, cruelty, toxic masculinity, lies, racism, sexism, et al.

And they have their Antichrist Superstar leading the flock.

Black Sabbath – St. Vitus Dance Lyrics 5 years ago
@[gregorybrian:28347] Here's a supplement to this explanation from All About Jazz website (https://www.allaboutjazz.com/bill-ward-from-jazz-to-black-sabbath-part-1-2-bill-ward-by-jack-gold-molina.php?pg=1)

Bill Ward: "I think I might have been about four, four or five, because my mother told me that they thought there was something wrong with me because I continually kept tapping on furniture. They thought I had something which, in Birmingham where I was born—or actually I was born in Aston which is in Birmingham—they said that I had Saint Vitus's Dance, and Saint Vitus's Dance is a common term in the midlands for somebody who can't sit still. So, apparently I was listless and discontent like I am now. [Laughs] But I couldn't stop tapping all the time, you know. I just was attracted to just wanting to make noise on different things."

Black Sabbath – St. Vitus Dance Lyrics 5 years ago
I've never heard a good explanation for the reason for the title. What's interesting about song titles is that sometimes a band has a song that has grown out of a jam but has no title. I can envision a scene where the person who the song is about (Bill) being frustrated about his predicament and thrashing his body about (maybe under the influence of cocaine, which they were consuming tons of) and someone makes a comment about it, like "Damn Bill! You look like you're doin' the bloody St. Vitus Dance, man!"

Killing Joke – Hosannas From The Basements Of Hell Lyrics 5 years ago
"The basements of Hell" was the name of the studio where they recorded the album of the same name. "But then I walk down the stairs and killing joke waits for me there then we play" means exactly what it says: Jaz walks down the stairs to the studio and the band (Killing Joke) waits for him and then they play.

Although Jaz's lyrics are sparse and always seemingly bizarre, there's almost always a plain story behind them.

Lynyrd Skynyrd – Sweet Home Alabama Lyrics 5 years ago
"Now Watergate does not bother me
Does your conscience bother you?
Tell the truth"

I was a kid during the Watergate hearings. I remember that summer of 1973 and it dominated the media. Bored us kids to death. Sweet Home Alabama was recorded in June 1973 but not released until June 1974, before Nixon resigned (August 8, 1974). The song was written and recorded while the trials were going hot and heavy. Everybody wanted to know the truth. Ronnie was referencing the investigation, not the criminal acts of breaking and entering and obstruction of justice by Nixon. When people said "Watergate," they were referring to the investigation. That's the way everybody understood it. And Ronnie would NEVER have dismissed criminal actions by a president. He was saying 'I've got nothing to hide.' They also campaigned for Jimmy Carter, saying "Mr. Carter's got the answer."

Lynyrd Skynyrd – Down South Jukin' Lyrics 5 years ago
Interestingly, the demo version has a lyrical difference that changes the story when compared to the studio version (THESE lyrics).

Studio: "... three fine mamas..."
Demo: "...three black mamas..."

Sounds like management wanted Ronnie to "clean up" his delivery. IMHO, the demo version is better.

Lynyrd Skynyrd – Saturday Night Special Lyrics 6 years ago
@[OneInchPunch:23125] You are wrong on two counts.

"Gimme Back My Bullets" is about the band slipping in the charts. Note:

"According to Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Gary Rossington in a 1992 Goldmine interview, this song is about the bullets Billboard charts use to signify a song is moving quickly up the chart. If a song is "#12 with a bullet," it is at #12 but will probably go higher next week. Skynyrd had not had a hit in a while and this was a message that they wanted to get back on the charts."

https://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=1704

Also, if you listen to and read the lyrics, they clearly say "Now handguns are made for killin'. They ain't no good for nothing else." That doesn't sound very pro-handgun to me.

When I first heard this song, I though it was hilarious. The video for it is basically a porno where the band members play stereotypes in a German porno and it is just as explicit as the lyrics. It was only released on adult websites. A simple Google search will reveal it. And no, it's not the actual members doing the dirty stuff but body doubles.

This song was a sarcastic homage to reactionary, country music lyrics and attitude. A dedication to myopic citizens of the United States. Pretty obvious.

In the movie, John Goodman sings the song, playing a good ol' Texan boy looking for love at middle age.

Love the movie. Escapes most people.

Black Sabbath – Hole In The Sky Lyrics 13 years ago
"I've seen the stars that disappear in the sun
But shooting's easy if you've got the right gun
And even though I'm sitting waiting for Mars
I don't believe there's any future in cards"

Stars disappearing in the sun: Stars are guides but are consumed by the sun (the ego). Mars: God of War; waiting for a coming conflict. Cards: Tarot.

Humorous aside: I used to think he was singing "I don't believe there's any future in cars."

"I've watched the dogs of war enjoying their feast" (Viet Nam)
"I've seen the western world go down in the east" (Viet Nam)
"The food of love became the greed of our time" (Woodstock era beliefs becoming appropriated by corporations)
"But now we're living on the profits of crime" (military industrial complex/capitalism)

Here's what I think of every time I think of the title: http://image10.webshots.com/11/0/43/73/180304373zLQYOn_fs.jpg

Black Sabbath – Children Of The Grave Lyrics 14 years ago
I first heard this album way back in the early 80's (back when it was on vinyl). I remember that whenever I listened to this album at night, I had to skip to the next song just as the ending part came up ("The Haunting") because it always terrified me and literally gave me chill bumps. But whenever I did stick it out and listen to it to the end, I would notice something faint that sounded like a carnival, a hurdy-gurdy, a flute or something right before the song started to fade out. I figured it was them trying to portray (in sound) ghostlike impressions, like one was hearing music from the spirit world. Much like the "hidden" song "Blow on a Jug" at the end of the album Sabotage, I wondered why I never heard anybody else mention it at the time. The mystery was finally revealed when I was listening to my new arrival of the Deluxe Edition of Master of Reality last night. The bonus disc has a studio outtake version instrumental version that goes longer and it is indeed a calliope playing an old familiar calliope tune (which I don't know the name of). My take on it is that they just left the brief intro to the calliope music on the original and then faded out the entire song after a few seconds.
