Elliott Smith – Let's Get Lost Lyrics 15 years ago
Isolation. Shutting people out of your life.

"Burning every bridge you cross" -- shunning everyone you meet. "Find some beautiful place to get lost" -- being totally alone, away from the people you feel so alienated from. "Had true love, made it die, pushed her away" -- unable to be totally giving and intimate in a relationship, always holding back. "I've been outside, invited in, but couldn't abide" -- people have reached out to be friends, but they are always shunned eventually, somehow.

Maybe I'm projecting, but I think this is a song about self-isolation and the inability to be really be close to anyone, time and time again always going back to being alone intentionally.

Radiohead – Go Slowly Lyrics 16 years ago
Sounds like "come over here" at the opening to me. But if he does say "Maria," maybe this song was inspired by West Side Story! Tony did have a way out for him and Maria -- they were gonna get some money together and flee the city. Unfortunately that didn't really work out...

Avril Lavigne – Things I'll Never Say Lyrics 16 years ago
I wanna blow you... away. I wanna see you go down... on one knee. When I first heard that, I thought it was absolutely hilarious. I still think it's pretty funny. Definitely intentional -- I'm sure how anyone could think that it's not.

Elliott Smith – Angeles Lyrics 16 years ago
He's embarrassed to admit it, but he wants to go to L.A. and become a star, and he is hoping that being in L.A. will bring him the success and wealth he secretly wants. He did move to L.A. in real life.

My favorite song of his. Possibly one of my favorite songs ever.

Kaki King – Life being what it is Lyrics 16 years ago
Such a good song. Basically, a loved one (Kaki's girlfriend?) is leaving for whatever reason (work?) and Kaki can't take it. She won't say goodbye and see her off because she resents she is leaving in the first place. A note isn't enough to compensate for the hurt Kaki feels. Deep down, Kaki knows that the girl has got to leave for whatever it is and it's not her fault, but Kaki still thinks she would throw away their relationship for whatever opportunities come up. Perhaps Kaki views it as revenge for a time she had done the exact same thing to this girl.

Amazing song. Guitar picking is great... I want to learn this if I can find some tabs.

Dntel – Your Hill Lyrics 16 years ago
This about remembering the simpler times in life when just sliding down a hill was enough to make us happy. Now we obsess over our soul-sucking jobs to get money because we think that's gonna make us happy. The song is saying, 'Hey, don't forget that you didn't used to need all this crap to make you happy.'

Dntel – Umbrella Lyrics 16 years ago
I don't care what these lyrics really mean. When I hear them, I think it's basically saying, "Look, you can run around the city/go out at night/get crazy/fuck random people/etc. but in the end, you won't be able to escape the emotions that make us human. No one can. So drive off into the night, do whatever you want, but you're still vulnerable. The emotions inflicted upon you by other people will still get to you."

Great song.

M.I.A. – Paper Planes Lyrics 17 years ago
If this song were by a man, I'd probably find it a little more disturbing. It's a little harder to imagine some raw chick who goes around dealing drugs and killing people and not caring. This is definitely an odd song. I saw an acoustic cover of it and that's how I discovered it.

These lyrics are also wrong. She's definitely saying "burner," not banner. I also think "bombs" might be "bongs" -- makes more sense to me. And I think she says "sometimes I THINK sittin' on trains..." Someome should submit a correction.

The lyrics don't make a whole lot of sense to me, but it just sounds like it's about going out for the night to party.

New Young Pony Club – The Bomb Lyrics 17 years ago
I had no fucking clue what this song meant. Thank you Danmagnet for explaining it. But that supports my notion that they sometimes just add totally random, nonsensical lyrics to their songs. I don't know much about the life and times of Einstein but I don't remember hearing much about his dancing, "Dancing, you are tearing it up, you know." The song is just dancable and I love that part: "Dan-cing! Dan-cing!" so I don't mind if it makes no sense.

Dntel – Dumb Luck Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this song is about Jimmy's own success. After his previous success, he expects "the jig to be up" and people will realize that maybe he isn't that talented -- his songs aren't original and his lyrics aren't good. His friends tell him his new music is good and he thinks they are lying -- his success will come crashing down once everyone realizes his music isn't that good and his success will just be a memory, like a dream.

Dntel used to be good. Then he started doing shitty songs with a pansie named Conor Oberst. Oberst obviously wrote these lyrics. You can tell because they are about drinking and are super-whiny.

Dntel – Why I'm So Unhappy Lyrics 18 years ago
I've never given much thought to the lyrics because I think that would ruin the song. Each individual word and each individual line is just so beautiful, I'd rather not think too hard about what the whole thing means.

But if I had to guess, she is trying to compartmentalize her life and she can't, it just won't work. I guess the guy comes in telling her she needs to break down her walls and leaves frustrated, and she feels alone...

I love this song. Jimmy makes repetition something that adds to the song... making it more haunting and resonant, instead of just annoying. I love how he combines normal guitar with electronic and glitch!

Kaki King – Jessica Lyrics 18 years ago
Hey hysteresis, news flash: Kaki King is a lesbian. I hate the spoil the interpretation for anyone, but as Kaki herself stated in many interviews, this song is about an older camp counselor she had who had a crush on her. The counselor's name was Jessica. And although Kaki didn't return the feelings, she found it very flattering and, as a young teenager, it was one of her first experiences in the realm of love. The song was about a love that never existed between them. By the way: Kaki's current girlfriend is acoustic guitarist Kelli Rudick -- her music is kinda reminiscient of Kaki's music prior to her newest stuff.

José González – Crosses Lyrics 19 years ago
BTW, if it wasn't self-evident in my interpretation, crosses mean ambulances. Ambulances usually have a red cross on them -- well, at least the old-fashioned ones did. I don't know if they do now. But the talk of "crosses on the boulevard" along with talk of sirens triggered that for me.

The lyrics were "i miss you" not "i love you" so I messed up in that regard, but it's still the same.

Dntel – Suddenly Is Sooner Than You Think Lyrics 19 years ago
Well, this song is obviously about a car accident killing this girl's lover and instantly changing her life.

The first verse is self-explanatory.

As for the last part:

"outside under a road
backwards into the ground
miss you
down, down
miss you
down, down"

She is using short fragments and words to create the feeling of tension and movement. The person (her boyfriend? girlfriend? we'll go with "he") is being thrown from his car into the ground and she loves him as he is falling. It would be like in a movie if we were to have a slow motion shot of him falling towards the ground and then a cut to her unaware, loving him, and then back to him falling, and then back to her. It's powerful imagery, to me.

The lyrics are beautiful, the singing is perfect, and the song is amazing. Dntel translates emotion so well. He is my favorite. Love him.

José González – Crosses Lyrics 19 years ago
To be honest, I listened to this song for nearly a year without paying much attention to the lyrics. I had always assumed it had a religious connotation, what with it being about "crosses" and perhaps the name "Gonzalez" played into my perception as weel since Spanish and Mexican culture is heavily Catholic. But it dawned on me the other day, this song is about an accident scene.

If not an actual accident, then a metaphorical one. But the metaphor isn't painted as clearly as the imagery of the accident. The metaphor could be feeling "broken" from a number of things, it's not really made apparent. "We'll cast some light and it'll be all right." Metaphorically, to shed light on something is to make it clearer. In this scenario, it means ambulance/police lights.

Not the most straight-forward song, but definitely a good one.

Elliott Smith – Between the Bars Lyrics 19 years ago
Before I even came here and read all the comments, I knew this song was about drinking. The alcohol is speaking to Elliott.

"drink up, baby, stay up all night
the things you could do, you won't but you might
the potential you'll be that you'll never see
the promises you'll only make"
-Here alcoholism is taking away his ability to function or be productive. It's causing him to break promises/responsibilities.

"drink up with me now and forget all about the pressure of days
do what i say and i'll make you okay and drive them away
the images stuck in your head"
-His alcoholism is a crutch he uses as an escape.

"people you've been before that you don't want around anymore
that push and shove and won't bend to your will
i'll keep them still"
-Elliott has been around alcoholics and doesn't want to end up like them, but he gets drunk and becomes them.

"drink up, baby, look at the stars, i'll kiss you again
between the bars where i'm seeing you
there with your hands in the air waiting to finally be caught"
-He wants to finally be reprimanded for his drinking because he can't stop it himself.

"drink up one more time and i'll make you mine
keep you apart deep in my heart separate from the rest
where i like you the best"
-Drinking is making his life fall apart and is cutting him off from society.

"and keep the things you forgot"
-He drinks until he blacks out and can't remember things.

"the people you've been before that you don't want around anymore
that push and shove and won't bend to your will
i'll keep them still"
-Again, the person he doesn't want to be comes out when he drinks.

That's my simplified brief intepretation. Great song.
