Blue Öyster Cult – Don't Fear The Reaper Lyrics 2 years ago
From Buck (the composer, singer and guitarist) ....

"I felt that I had just achieved some kind of resonance with the psychology of people when I came up with that, I was actually kind of appalled when I first realized that some people were seeing it as an advertisement for suicide or something that was not my intention at all. It is, like, not to be afraid of [death] (as opposed to actively bring it about). It's basically a love song where the love transcends the actual physical existence of the partners."

BTW ... every now and then I totally binge on this song. Seriously. I'll place it on repeat and listen until the morning sun breaks my spell.

The highlight of the song, for me, is the brilliant, haunting single guitar note that sounds like a wolf's midnight howl that nearly disappears behind the vocals "Valentine is done..." but never quite disappears, only to reappear as one of the most haunting sounds in all music ... that wail of a single note as it bends like the bough of a weeping willow in the midst of a midnight storm.

If you come here trying to understand the lyrics to this masterpiece, my advice is to IGNORE what everyone says here.

Seriously.

This song will mean so much more to you if you let the lyrics speak to you, rather than some Internet geeks tell you what to think.

Just keep listening. It is a *GREAT* song, so listening a thousand times should not get boring (it didn't for me!)

Eventually the words will have their own meaning that is YOUR meaning. Don't let any other f**kers tell you how to think.

The only things you truly need to know are basic English as well as a little bit about Shakespeare. The rest will be found in your heart and soul.

I know this song must be about *something* ... but every time I listen I can't pay attention to the lyrics because the song's infectious groove is so overwhelming!

One lyric I have always been able to pay attention to (because I think it is hilarious) is "... and there's Mrs Perkins again" looks like I heard it incorrectly. With the way I heard it ... it was always saying ... there she goes, Mrs Perkins! She's already started her drinking again and it isn't even lunch time yet!

The Doobie Brothers – Long Train Runnin' Lyrics 2 years ago
I love how the lyrics switch back and forth between trains and love. And I love to ponder *why* it is written this way.

To me, the train aspect of the song represents time ... time marches along steady and unstoppable. The love part of the song is simply discussing how love comes and goes for all of us. Some end up with heartbreak (Miss Lucy), others are more fortunate ... but for all of them, good or bad, happy or sad, ... they are all powerless against that all-powerful freight train known as "time"

[btw ... I alwas feared Miss Lucy won't be coming back because she jumped (on purpose) in front of a train. I am sure I am not alone in this]

Cheap Trick – Surrender Lyrics 2 years ago
"soldier's falling off some Indonesian junk" - Most comments lean toward this referring to an std caught by the soldier from some Indonesian girl and his * falling off.

but a few comments see it referring to coming down from being OD'd on heroin that originated from Indonesia. I'm firmly in this camp. The strongest argument would be that "Indonesian junk" is unmistakably (IMO) a reference to heroin ('junk' = heroin, *especially* back in the 70s) and Indonesia (IIRC) was the source of a fair amount of illicit drugs (mostly pot and heroin) back in the day, and much of it was accessible to the thousands of US soldiers stationed in southeast Asia. His mom was, after all, stationed in the Philippines (btw, WAC = Women's Army Corp), and the southern islands of the Philippines are close to the eastern-most extend of Indonesia.

The fact that the previous stanza clearly refers to STDs lends some creedance to this stanza also being about STDs. But I still don't buy it. The terminology is just way too drug-focused for me.

Later in the song...

I always misheard "my KISS records on" as "my kid's records on" - which didn't quite make sense, since the viewpoint of the song doesn't seem to be of someone who has kids, let alone kids old enough to have their own records!

Overall, the lyrics are incredibly funny and full of innuendo. Not only does the song ROCK, it always makes me chuckle at some of the hints.

The Clash – Should I Stay or Should I Go Lyrics 3 years ago
first listened to this tune around the same time I first started with pot. I would get so fried listening to this song that after the first stanza, partly because the remaining lyrics never overtly mentioned the romantic relationship again, my imagination would twist the song's meaning to something ridiculously metaphysical. My state of "deeper awareness" would hear "should I stay or should I go?" as asking God whether I should continue living or not. Should I stay on this Earth or leave it? My thoughts couldn't escape this way of thinking when I was in a room with friends and we were blasting that song full volume. The lyrics were drilled into my brain by the volume and I couldn't ponder anything else. It was classic stoner micro-focus! It was a bit too much and too deep to handle. I laugh at myself now when I recall it. Funny song to get deep about, but I suppose anything can seem ultra-deep when you've got some good shite!

Dervish – Ar Éirinn Ní Neosfainn Cé Hí Lyrics 9 years ago
The line "It's ar Éirinn ní neosfainn cé hí" translates to "It's for Ireland I'd not tell her name".

.. but that only confuses me. This song is a love song, but the singer doesn't not want to reveal his lover's name because of Ireland??? Why??? Does he think Ireland might be offended?

I love this song immensely. But I've never quite come up with an interpretation of that line that satisfies me.

Tom Waits – Bad Liver and a Broken Heart (In Lowell) Lyrics 10 years ago
The subtitle "(In Lowell)" is a reference to the city of Lowell, MA - the hometown and burial site of novelist Jack Kerouac, who died at the age of 47 due to cirrhosis of the liver. Cirrhosis is, invariably, caused by alcoholism. Hence at least two parts of the title, "bad liver" and "in Lowell" are references to Kerouac.

But I don't think the lyrics necessarily tell Kerouac's tale. Just the title, and overall tone of the song, describe Kerouac. Perhaps someone else can clarify that.

Rod Stewart – Maggie May Lyrics 13 years ago
I first became aware of this song around 1975, when I was 14. I've listened to it ever since and it *still* sends chills down my spine. This song oozes emotion in every way possible: awesome melody, killer lyrics, Rod's raspy voice soulfully tugging at your heartstrings, great band, and, wow, the way that mandolin is layered on top of the suspended rhythm at the end is the perfect way to allow the listener to reflect upon the feelings he/she has lived in the previous 2 mins.

Alison Krauss – Foolish Heart Lyrics 13 years ago
This song's about a girl whose heart wants to fall in love for a no-good man - a man she's had a history with before. Perhaps he was uncaring, abusive or unfaithful. Whatever the reason, she knows in her head he is bad news. But her heart, being foolish and refusing to yield to her mind's logic, continues to pull at her.

It isn't an easy decision, as she's obviously attracted to him. Yet this time she is determined to leave. She's been burned one-to-many times by this guy.

BTW - I absolutely *love* Allison Krauss' voice! And, especially, in the opening to this song. She's so musical in so many ways .. tone, emotion, phrasing, tempo - she's got it all and uses it to really communicate the emotion of a song :-)

Blockhead – Hello Popartz Lyrics 13 years ago
These come from old Charlie Brown TV specials. The candy apples line comes from "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" and is spoken (in the movie) by Sally (Charlie's sister) after missing Halloween because Charlie convinced her to sit in a pumpkin patch all night waiting for the Great Pumpkin. The entire quote is:

"I was robbed! I spent the whole night waiting for the Great Pumpkin, when I could have been out for tricks or treats. Halloween is over, and I missed it! You blockhead. You kept me up all night waiting for the Great Pumpkin, and all that came was a beagle. I didn't get a chance to go out for tricks or treats. And it was all your fault. I'll sue! What a fool I was! I could have had candy apples and gum and cookies and money and all sorts of things, but no, I had to listen to you. You blockhead. What a fool I was. Trick or treats come only once a year. And I missed it by sitting in a pumpkin patch with a blockhead. YOU OWE ME RESTITUTION!"

What I want to know is whether Blockhead the artist named himself after this nickname for Charlie Brown, or did he just realize the connection after he already came up with the name.

Canned Heat – Going Up The Country Lyrics 13 years ago
I know its an oxymoron, but this song has the most kick ass flute playing in all of rock-n-roll!!!

Also, this song epitomizes, like no other, the summer of love / flower power era that was 1967. This songe, as well as the mood among young folk back then, was all about checking out of "proper" society and all the stress and strife that entails; and about leaving it all behind for mother nature and a simpler life filled with drugs, little stress, no fuss, peace and love.

By the 1980s, like the true hypocrites they were, they all sold out.

omg dude you're a god for seeing the truth in this song, nay, *prophetic* song. And of course ol' CW is absolutely *THE MAN* for foreseeing the cluster f**k that was Win98, a full 23 years prior to the fact! I long thought CW chose his stage name with the idea that CW stood for Country/Western. However it is plain to see he was thinking simply "Crash, Windows!"

Furthermore, I submit that "McCall" is a hidden reference to that all-too-frequent event emanating from Redmond, the dreaded "Memory Corrupting Call".

Tom Waits – Tom Traubert's Blues (Four Sheets to the Wind in Copenhagen) Lyrics 14 years ago
Bingo! Tom, like so many great artists over the ages, have indeed been reluctant to explain their art for the very reason you spelled out for us.

And that is the reason I always come to songmeanings.net with trepidation. If it is a song I really care about and in it I have vested much of my own emotion, I probably won't read other people's take on that song, for fear of tainting my own relationship with the song.

Tommy Sands – There Were Roses Lyrics 14 years ago
I have to admit, when I first had this song on CD I listened repeatedly and sobbed more tears than I had for many a year. Very moving song.

This song doesn't hide much, it tells a story with no metaphorical disguises whatsoever (well - perhaps the roses are a metaphor, more on that later).

If you don't get it, this is the story: the singer had two friends, the 3 of them would listen to music at local pubs in Northern Ireland - this was during the time of much protestant vs catholic bloodshed in that "northern land". One of his friends is protestant, the other catholic. The protestant is murdered for no reason - other than he was a protestant and some catholic thugs were out to kill (probably to avenge a previous killing of one of theirs). Protestants then retaliate a few days later, by murdering the catholic friend.

The singer pens this song, trying to understand, trying to cope with sorrow, and hoping to teach others.

BTW - roses are a typical flower used in funerals, and often signify death in lyrics. Hence the connection of roses to the story line.

There are some definite anti-war sentiments in this song - there's no mistaking that!! I do love the final stanza:

I don't know where the moral is or where this song should end,
But I wondered just how many wars are fought between good friends.
And those who give the orders are not the ones to die.
It's Bell and O'Malley and the likes of you and I.

Wow - what the world could use right now is more people to read that stanza over and over again until they understand it. Or, better yet, listen to the song 50 times a day for 50 days.

There are many covers of this song, but the genuine, unadulterated emotion of Tommy Sands' original version has never been matched.

Creedence Clearwater Revival – Lodi Lyrics 14 years ago
The 2nd meaning I always found was not "low die", but "low dive" - as in, he's stuck playing in a lowly dive of a bar, the worst type of venue a musician can end up in.

This is especially appropriate in that he distinctly sings it as "stuck in *A* Lodi again" (ie, he adds the word 'a'), which fits with being stuck in *A* lousy bar again.

The Goo Goo Dolls – Name Lyrics 14 years ago
This is another one of those songs that is written from the artist's point of view, yet is open to interpretation by the listener in any way that fits the listener's context.

In other words, it may mean one thing to the artist, but a completely different thing to the listener. We all take our own baggage to our song experiences. Usually, the artist is not only OK with that, but also *wants* it that way.

So, that being said - I refuse to read anybody's interpretation of this song. I prefer to have my own understanding, unadulterated by the thoughts - no matter how valid or interesting - of others.

And, if you feel in any way remotely like I do - then for your own benefit do NOT read any of these interpretations! Let this song be your own!!!

Donny Hathaway – Where Is The Love Lyrics 14 years ago
Lyrics pretty much speak for themselves - basically just another broken hearted love song.

However, the song's "just another" aspect begins and ends with its lyrics. Everything else about this song is nothing short of stellar. Beautiful singing, awesome harmonies, well-crafted arranging and rock-solid production. This classic tear-jerker of a song owes its longevity to all these fine qualities.

I especially appreciate the superbly emotional, yet never over-the-top, singing from both Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway. Decade after decade, pop singers try to outdo themselves with overblown, manufactured emotion (& ridiculously pained facial expressions and excessive hand movements).

Yet there have been a few amongst the crowd who communicate ten times the emotion with one-tenth the effort. These few are pop's finest gemstones. This song features two such gems.

We lost Donny way too soon :(

Who the hell is Captain Clitus? The only references I can find are:

1. Clitus was an officer for Alexander the Great. Though he once saved AtG's life, he later ".. said something to offend Alexander the Great. Alexander took a lance and murdered Clitus. From then on, Alexander's followers had to be very wary of what they said."

(from http://ancienthistory.about.com/od/alexanderpeople/g/Clitus.htm)

2. a) an overzealous spaz, or b) diarea of the mouth

(from http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=clitus)

Actually, I can see how the urbandictionary definitions derive from the loose mouthed Clitus of AtG's time.

However, I haven't figured out how these definitions fit in with the song's lyrics.

Ideas anyone?

Broken Social Scene – Anthems for a Seventeen Year Old Girl Lyrics 14 years ago
I think a previous poster may be correct in that the singer is referring to herself in the third person. For example, in "and I like you like that" - 'you' is actually the singer speaking of herself at an earlier stage of her life (hmm, taking a wild guess here, but it might be when she was 17?)

Anyway, the production/composition/arranging of this song is just so very perfect. There are millions of things to love about the music. To name a few:

1. The processing of the vocals - what a cool and unique sound, and fits the contemplative mood of the lyrics.

2. The incredibly subtle harmonies during "park that car, drop that phone, sleep on the floor, dream about me". The lead vocal essentially stays on the same note, while at least two other voices fade in and out, swapping pitches both above and below the lead and following a cool chromatic progression that continually changes the tone of the lead.

3. Awesome use of syncopation by starting each line on the "and of four" (musical term) rather than on the downbeat. Just adds ever so much to this song. They could've gone uninteresting and used the downbeat, but by adding the syncopation it adds yet another level of feeling to the overall effect.

4. The cacophony of sound throughout the song - violins (electronic or real?), banjo, ... They don't just throw these sounds under the song, but whoever produced this song went to another level by having all these instruments fading in and out, changing from channel to channel, altering the timbre from one note to the next.

5. You can listen to this song 50 times in a row and still find things on the 50th listen you never heard in the previous 49. So many things going on!

All these things (and much, much more!) add up to one absolutely wonderful song! These little (and big) aspects of recording make the difference between a very cool song and an absolutely extraordinary song elevated orders of magnitude above the drivel that passes for song production these days. This song deserves an award.

Laura Nyro – Captain Saint Lucifer Lyrics 14 years ago
c'mon people, no comments on this great song???

I think there are a few valid interpretations of what exactly captain saint lucifer represents: a lover, hard liquor, drugs, a mother's love. Which is correct? This sort of song is intentionally left vague by the songwriter so that each listener may bring their own experience and interpretation to the song.

I know this sounds like a copout on my part. Nevertheless I think the great LN truly would want us to think of it this way.

I do wish I knew what the hell some of the phraseology means:

buckles off shingles? I've not a clue about this one.

going to the moon dock? This could mean she's about to get high - on pot or booze or whatever.

Paul Simon – 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover Lyrics 14 years ago
Like someone mentioned previously, this song is not meant to be deeply profound - it is instead playful, a touch sad, and ever so mildly philosophical.

My belief is the girl wants out of the relationship - but she has yet to tell the guy. Then one night she senses ambivalence (bordering on pain) in the guy's feelings about the relationship.

So she jumps on the opportunity, slyly giving the guy his freedom to end the relationship with her full blessing and no ill feelings. In so doing, she paints her own image as caring and altruistic. But ultimately she is only giving him his freedom so that she gets her own freedom as well - with the added bonus that the blame goes on the guy's shoulders. This frees her of any guilt about ending the relationship (except, of course, in her own conscience - if she has any)

I like the catchy drum work at the start of the song and during the 'A' choruses :)

Indeed the bass riff is awesomely addictive. Love it. There is also much more to enjoy in this song. The clapping. All the crazy (guitar?) sounds around 3:40 - 4:00. It is a truly great song!

In terms of meaning, all I get out of it is from "this one will know how far I live on" - to me, "this one" refers to my son (name of the song is Stars and Sons, after all), and, in a way, a son is someone who keeps his father's spirit alive after the father is gone (dead) by remembering and revering all the good the father brought to the son's life.

Christy Moore – Delirium Tremens Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is lighthearted to say the least. It is filled with lots of Irish humor and is very funny.

CM has used various lyrics for this over the years. This one is from his own website:

"And then I dreamt I was in the jacuzzi with that auld hoor from No. 10"

('auld hoor from No. 10' instead of 'along with Alice Glenn')

Here, "that auld hoor from No. 10" translates to "that old whore from No. 10 (Downing St.)", which would be a very derogatory reference to Margaret Thatcher. This makes perfect sense, since they couldn't come from more distant sides of the political spectrum.

It is pretty hilarious once you understand this slur! :)

Tom Waits – Tom Traubert's Blues (Four Sheets to the Wind in Copenhagen) Lyrics 15 years ago
Whew! this song is F'ing depressing - and that's a HUGE compliment! Tom Waits is one artist extroidinaire.

To be honest, when I listen to this song I envy the poor man who lives out of a battered old suitcase - because 1) he's probably toasted, 2) he's happy enough, and he's at peace w/himself.

OK, you say I'm off target? Well, find for me in the lyrics ONE line that indicates that the subject of this song is UNHAPPY or NOT at peace with himself.

I suggest he is an alcoholic, he has accepted his alcoholism and he is basically observing the night people around him before he lays himself down for a night of drunken sleep.

Again, find for me in the lyrics any line that suggests he is unhappy.

It is funny, because the tone of the song is very sad.

Are we supposed to pity this man? If you accept my premise that he is a happy (albeit a happy alcoholic) person, then why should we pity him?

Personally, my only pity for him is if he doesn't have the joy of raising children. However, we don't even know that much. He could've easily raised 5 kids or more, and *then* became alone. It has occurred before.

Maybe he missed out on love

Funny .. I'd rank this as one of the saddest songs of all time. Nevertheless I envy this poor, probably homeless, man.

WOW!!!! There really isn't any way to explain this song .. Laura Nyro pretty much spells it out there for you in black and white. If you still don't get it, not sure what I can say to help.

this is an AMAZING song about not only hard drugs, but also about the human condition and why someone would want to inject enough drug to kill. some people have simply had enough pain in their life .. they've given up and they'll do anything to leave our reality.

This song is simply about an encounter with such a person.

I cannot imagine a more moving way to present this event to the general public. Laura Nyro's lyrics are simply STUNNING in this song.

The guy just wants to leave this earth - he doesn't care about dignity or anything else society may dictate. He just wants to check out.

But, despite his disinterest, his life simply won't be forgot .. due to the kindness and understanding of a brilliant songwritter who promises to make his story into a song.

God bless this poor soul (and others like him) .. and God bless Laura Nyro.

Laura Nyro – Timer Lyrics 16 years ago
Great, GREAT lyrics! What they mean .. I don't rightly know yet. It is the kind of song you need to cogitate on a few times before it has a meaning for you.

I think it has, intentionally, multiple meanings. First, Timer is a metaphor for, well, time.

But if so, what is she talking about in "If you love me true ... I'll spend my life with you"??? Doesn't quite sound like something you'd say to Mr. Time. More like something you say to a Significant Other.

But later, Timer is, essentially, equated with God. But you don't normally place a demand on God to 'love me true'.

So, Timer is 1) the simple passage of time; 2) a boyfriend/girlfriend; 3) God; 4) some combination of the previous.

I think there is no correct answer. Again, this vagueness is intentional, and is also why this song is so great - it lets the listener take from it what they may, rather than spelling everything out clearly for them. This way, it makes the song more personal and meaningful to the listener.

God bless you, Laura!

Also, another musical tidbit about the Fifth Dimension's rendition .. the ending is based on the signature ending of the great big band leader Count Basie. Almost all of his arrangements ended with him playing 3 chords on his piano in a particular syncopation, followed by a stinger by the band.

I also know this version from The Fifth Dimension, and I love it as well.

The musical style is pure Gospel, yet the lyrics espouse the joys of drinking, perhaps to excess. I find this very ironic and very funny.
