Also, another musical tidbit about the Fifth Dimension's rendition .. the ending is based on the signature ending of the great big band leader Count Basie. Almost all of his arrangements ended with him playing 3 chords on his piano in a particular syncopation, followed by a stinger by the band.
I also know this version from The Fifth Dimension, and I love it as well.
The musical style is pure Gospel, yet the lyrics espouse the joys of drinking, perhaps to excess. I find this very ironic and very funny.
This song craftily written with many obscure references but when you add them all up is clearly about sex. Listen to the Laura Nyro version and you'll 'get it'. The 5th Dimension version is such sugar coated pop that only literal interpretation shines through.
I've heard the 5th Dimension's version of this song, and I absolutely love it. It's so fun and beautiful! Plus, it seems like a lot of songs about drinking are about getting drunk and then doing shady stuff, but this one is so innocent! It's great.
